  • steak > fruitloops.

  • EVERYONE SUPPORT THEIR PROJECT BY BUYING THE GYROVORBIS APP FOR EITHER IPHONE OR ANDROID!!!

  • 1 thing ive learnt from everything.

    NEVER EVER SCREW WITH LUA

LUA WILL SCREW U OVER AND OVER AND OVER

  • So will normal enemies NOT have ai that fall into types?

I mean, you'd make a fallen (from diablo, cowardly (runs away)) type ai. An archer type ai, a berzerk charge from a distance ai, a normalish default enemy ai, etc etc.

  • I'm not good at programming, I'm still trying to get myself into it somehow, but I thought of one question (probably the most stupid one so far, who knows).

When you talk about the lua game loop, that checks for events every frame, I thought about this:

Wouldn't it be better to have the game react to a trigger and pass the event to lua, instead of having another loop running on top of the game loop?

Like keeping lua idle while no event is triggered?

  • Yes, that's a very intelligent observation. You're correct. Polling in Lua can be expensive, and it is better to call Lua when possible. BUT BUT BUT--think about programming triggers. You have to have some sort of way to register an event with your engine to invoke a particular Lua script/function, You have to manually code almost every possible type of trigger. Our engine was designed to allow for Lua to poll for things that can't be created with simple triggers. It's extremely powerful.

  • I think I see your point. Thx.

    :D

  • what happened to the other 5 videos ? well in the info you say 3 is done... where is it ? I'm very confused.

  • steak for breakfast thats amazing sounding

  • looks good man keep on working

  • So at this stage you didn't even have a storyline? Isn't that the first thing you do? That's what I do. Mostly when you create a story after starting on the game, it would be crappy. It becomes more of a "just because we need to have a story"-story, you know. But who knows, I have many more videos to watch and you're not finished yet so.. maybe you'll pull it off. :)

  • Not having a storyline and not wanting to release a storyline are two completely different things. We have had a nearly complete storyline for about a year now. I don't release things until I'm ready, and the storyline is meant to be experienced, not introduced through me talking about it.

  • Oh, sorry - I misheard.

  • Or maybe I misspoke? I haven't watched this in a very long time. Maybe I actually did say that. Haha.

  • storyline progression, I believe means te story progresses in-game.

  • *the

  • I know this is 10 months late, but what you normally do is make the engine first, make the storyline, and then the game. The reason why, is you never know if your engine is going to work the way you think it will. You never know if the stuff in your storyline happening will be eligible based on the things your engine can do, and if there is no engine when you make your story line, you cant know what is eligible and what isn't, because there is nothing that shows you, making you guess.

  • You guys use BlitzBasic on some of your stuff? Wow, never knew it was that good.

  • The level editor uses it. The engine is C/++.

  • Well, I can tell the engine is C++. Like I said "stuff".

  • BlitzPlus, actually.

  • cool. im working with my friends on a game too. its also an RPG. so far i got no character models, but in making a little teaser trailer kinda thing for it... it's hard work but mine wont even come half as good as yours

  • Nice job Iam new to coding i was woundering how to make the frame work of the game

  • hey i was wondering about the physic's when you throw something do you tell it which way to throw it or is it just being tossed in which the direction your standing

  • Let me ask you a question:

How would a object be thrown in real life?

    I hope your answer is:

In the direction of the thrower.

I hope this help's answer your question.

  • LOL!!!

  • looking good...

  • Now you have me interested in Lua...

  • Hey, Rachel IMed you, didn't she XD.

  • hey definitly digging your series, but gotta question.. is that mushroom a sprite from Super Mario Bros 3

  • Yes, we have random placeholder graphics in places that we don't yet have original graphics for. It's a temporary nod to our roots.

  • I'm working on a graphics & game engine at the moment. A lot of work to be done, since I'm focusing on making a complete set, you should never have to search for other tools or libraries to make a game.

  • The thing is that making your own enigine will in th end usually never happen because your goal is hard to find. If you were to make a game then you can find a engine with all of your wishes and do it. Its a big task to do a rpg or even a video game. But one of hte biggest is to make a game engine, able to make a game with it, and still be reusable.

  • Yes, but make the engine yourself and you know exactly how to use it. Generally looking at someone else's code results in an awkward "WTF" moment, at least for me.

  • thenicelordbj,

No one here cares about what you claim to have achieved or claim to be capable of, no one really even cares that your probably into weird cat sex. The only thing people care about is that you are wasting everyones time by posting your bullshit all over the web. You have already been exposed as a failure in everything you have ever attempted to achieve on the internet. You have no dignity and every internet community you are part of hates you, please just delete your account now

  • Fattard, I mean niceLARD, not only have you completely avoided the entire point of my reply but you have embarrasesd your self in 2 ways. 1) Acting like a complete douche. AND 2) Failing to use cammas, AGAIN. We all know your a newbie that can't even disable a fire wall. People hate you, go die.

BTW: Falco, I think you guys are doing amazing work, keep it up! (At least I understand that the mushroom was just a placeholder graphic and nothing more, unlike some script kiddy douche bags out there)

  • Whatever FPS I captured it at with Camstudio. I'm using Nintendo's artwork? Wait, Mario eats mushrooms? When the fuck did that happen?!

  • niceLARD, you said you only saw 10 seconds of it, but the mushroom doesn't appear in the video until about 2 minutes and 30 seconds in. You are a lieing tard, people hate you, go die.

  • Dude, that's the exact same thing you personal messaged me. You're too dumb to come up with new material, not to mention that you stole your little "special olympics" quote to begin with. You fail at life. I'm pretty sure once you die you'll fail at the afterlife too. =/

  • Says the guy who admitted to being 'new to programming' just a month ago? Says the guy who fucking lies and claims to be 'Dark Byte', programmer of the great (open source, anyone can help) Cheat Engine...Says the worthless piece of shit who doesn't know the difference between SDL and Allegro? Says the douche that can't disable his own firewall?

Do us a favor and go jack off to Cat Hentai, you stupid fuck. At least savor a molecule of dignity you may have once had and never post again.

  • Well this is a useful comment. I mean it's really obvious that you're just being a douchebag just because you can't get laid and have no knowledge of it. ;p

  • Ironic, as this video shows no code what-so-ever. Either you're too naive to understand that this video was not intended to be educational but informational on the development of our game, or your too stupid to navigate your way around youtube and find the many other videos by us that DO pertain to programming.

  • Thenicelordj, you're weird.

  • He's the type that trolls on different game devvers' pages, as well as the pages of anyone not Christian, and is a member of a "runescape cheating" forum. All he does is troll, and he's really not worth anyone's time.

  • Your point is? Runescape message board, or runescape forum, big deal. I can't really say I feel one-upped at all.

Are you seriously provoked by me?

  • "consequences of provoking me?" lol

what are you gonna do ?

    fucking script kiddie

  • Yea XNA is awesome. I me and four mates made a game using it for a summer school paper at university. Its basically a facade for directX.

lol also I think you get a bit more sleep dude, you would be surprised how much more productive you are when your fresh. And what solutions you come up with when your mulling over problems in ur subconscious while sleeping, write them down or you'll forget them in the morning like I always do

  • Have you guys looked at XNA, also how you find like more than 1 friend who are adept at programming, also does anyone still play the dreamcast ?

  • I guess these guys don't sweat about it -- and I like it!

  • and the Dreamcast does have a large homebrew following. It's my favorite console, and creating a game for it has always meant something to me since I was like 14.

No, we haven't looked into XNA. It's definitely not the kind of thing we're interested in.

  • How come u can say that xna is not the thing that youre interested if you have not even looked into it

  • Falco, give him the lecture. Or redirect him to it...(I forgot which video the comment was on)

  • Well I can answer myself

maybe because youre not targeting neither windows or xbox360

but you should look into it sometime in the future. Im using it and it is awesome

  • XNA seems to be very powerfull and you can quickly make your success.

But there is still a way of life building everything from scratch with C++ and DirectX for example.

  • By "looked into it" I merely implied that I hadn't considered using it for our project. It's not what we're looking for, it's not what we want, and in order to get it on 360, you have to pay to be in their little club and can only distribute it to other club members. We want to make this game from ground up on whatever platform we desire without the regulation of somebody like Microsoft. We have a much larger audience and many more options with our approach rather than using XNA.

  • Heckyeah, I have a Wii, Ps2, Ps3, and my bf has a Dreamcast. I'm not good friends with ANYBODY who owns a '360. ;o

Unfortunately, my game programming class next semester is teaching C# with XNA because UMKC is a nooblet.

  • Gief video number 3!

  • Too bad I couldn't see this yesterday morning I got up eatly to go to Six Flags. Not htat Six Flags wasn't done but hte buss ride with my friend Gary sucked!

  • my friend get all his rockstars and nail them onto his ceiling!LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!Like from bottom it looks alright, YAY RUSH!Great Drummer!

  • we're all waiting for the 3rd one ;)

  • I have a surprise.

  • I was wondering if you guys tested the newest version on Dreamcast?

  • Was under the impression that you guys would no longer be using the art we made.

  • That would be really lame of us. Marcel and Peter just haven't made a new level with any new tiles.

  • Sorry for interrupting your video with my IMings. D:

  • Forgiven.

  • I am curious on how battles will look like in your game.

  • I agree with amcadam26. It does seem a little intimidating compared to the cpp and SDL that I'm doing now. However, your explanation of what Lua's doing in your game has inspired me to look into it.

  • Lua itself is extremely EXTREMELY easy. It's integrating it with the C/++ engine that's complex.

  • after my editor is done thats the route im taking

    lets see how it goes

  • simple like python?

  • Simpler than Python, but yeah similar.

  • I'll keep that in mind. Could you direct me to any information regarding Lua and its integration into a c/++ engine? Also, where did you and the team learn Lua? I remember you saying something in your first video about learning Lua that night.

  • iv noticed ur white little bridge thing, umm, its kinda going from light calm grass to this brushy grass, and it doesnt look right, may need to fix it up a bit?

  • Those are graphics that are from our previous artists and aren't even going to be in the game.

  • A quick suggestion, Nintendo has a system where you can put your home made games on the wii-shop channel and people will pay nintendo, who will pay you, to download the game.

  • I don't think Falco et al are interested in making money. They just want to make a game that's fun to play. I'm working on a game right now and as a hobbyist I'm just making it for fun and to challenge myself.

    Peace

  • Oh hell yes, once Nintendo makes their devkits available to the general public, I hope to get one. I can't speak for Falco but I'm seriously infatuated with WiiWare.

  • I wonder how much the devkits will go for.

  • I've heard around $2000 - $4000 as rumors, don't know officially. Last I heard they were only giving/selling devkits to established developers.

It'd motivate me to get a job if they made it available though. XD

  • How does a console devkit work? Do they just give you an API that will allow your code to run on the console or something?

  • gyrovorbis u could do C++ tutorials too.

  • nice video. Lua still seems very scary as I'm only just coming over from using BlitzBasic to using C++ with Allegro. Really nice explaination though.

  • That was a very good explanation on how you are going to use lua in the RPG. You must be so happy that the engine is finally usable. :)

  • looking good!..a questions, when are the team going to have a video together like *Adventures in Game Development Chapter 9 Part 2* etc ?.

Hope for a demo soon :)

  • Soon. When school is out for everybody.

  • Hey man lookin good so far! now i know this is no where near the finish-line but i do hope you do like a 3 - 5 frame animation for the water and bushes to have a more living enviroment i am an artist myself so thats thats the only thing i can comment on ^^ but im sure you guys can handle it, love ur vids btw, keep it up

  • Yeah, we do plan to have all sorts of animation. It's even in the engine to handle pretty complex animations (and if not, we go to lua), but we haven't really had environmental graphics that animate completed yet.

  • yes finally first person to comment, but anyway this is really Dev intensive on you lol day 2 good luck with the rest of the week.
