  • this was a great help. my friends' son (toddler) ripped most the keys off. the only problem I had that you don't go over in the video is how to connect the hinges which was easy after about 2 minutes of not realizing the larger piece had facets for the smaller piece to connect to (noticed it when I read the first comment on the page). thank you so much for making the video exceedingly simple.

  • Question, for some reason my key when i reassemble it is lopsided, did i do something wrong. I took out another key to see if there was something wrong with the original key but it isn't that. The left hand side of the key is slanted making typing quickly difficult.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • @TheSpencePo

    Could have two reason:

    1. one of these very small hooks below the key is broken so that the hinge has nothing to hold on that side of the key.

    2. the hinge isn't put together correctly

  • im not sure wat is wrong with my keys, they press down fine but they will not properly function , like when i start it to type my password some keys dont work, wat should i do? :/

  • @saucebawsrs turn numlock off

  • I just wanted to say thanks for the video it helped me out bigtime for replacing my Z. Now I can finally get some zzz's.

  • Hi, nice video.

Can you tell me if i am just changing a key for cosmetic reasons (as all my keys function well) do i need to remove the rubber cup? Or can i just leave it on and simply put the new key on top.

    Thanks in advance.

  • @jcEightySeven leave the rubber cup in place. It can't be removed anyway (unless you use some violence).

Just attach the new one on top.

  • @apfeltasten Ok thanks for the reply but i am confused. You say it can't be removed but isnt that what you are doing in the video (and doesnt look very violent to me lol)? or is that just in case someone would need to remove them. sorry if the question may be stupid :P

  • @jcEightySeven We are talking about the rubber cup, right? The key and the white plastic mechanism can be removed and assembled easily as shown in the video. But the rubber cup is fixed and technically irreplaceable.

  • Comment removed

  • @apfeltasten Oh, i am reffering to the white plastic mechanism. You take it off during the video to replace the key, but do i need to remove this and replace or can i just leave that alone and simply swap my key for a new key? thanks for your help

  • anyone know what the little rubber things beneath the keys are called and where I can get one?

  • @54GrantC they are called rubber cup. You should ask someone who is selling these keys to cut one out for you.

  • 1:00

  • Thank you

  • yay! thanks so much!

  • thank you soo much!!!

this worked on my PowerBook G4!!

i had the same problem with the space bar.......i tried to fix it myself but when i did i took the cap out and it fell apart and then when i put it back together again i put one of the parts upside - down and then that made my space bar soo stiff and its ben like that for about 4 - 6 months now but its finaly fixed!!

It feels soo good with the space bar fixed!!!!

Thank you soooooo very very very very very very very very very much!

    :D :)!!!

  • is it possible to change the old silver macbook pro keys to te new plastic chiclet ones?

  • great video, though a bit blurry at certain parts but nonetheless awesome.

  • Thanks for the tutorial, you make it look a lot easier than it really is. Your video shows replacement keys with prongs sticking out. The 2007 MacBook Pro keys do not have prongs connected. Maybe mine broke off. The "delete" key came off. There are 2 parts: a 3-sided plastic object and just the button. Can you help?

  • Thanks, but what about the 'Delete" key?

Mine came off and there are 2 white plastic fillers under it. One is rectangular with a hole, the other is 3-sided. I've tried all night, can't figure out how to replace it.

  • I wish all key boards were touch screen so I never have to go through this bull shit ever again!!

  • hey we need the gummy thing 1:09 know where to get one?

  • That looks great, however, the plastic backing is stuck on the back of the detached key so I can't put it on first. It looks totally attached and feels like it will break if I try to separate it from the key.

    Any ideas?? Thanks

  • two of my number keys stopped working!! The seven and the eight keys stopped working. Additionally, the back light in the center of the keyboard is the brightest while the keys away from the center are dimly lit.

1.Do I have to replace the whole keyboard?

    2. Where is the best place to purchase a macbook pro (bought 200eight) keyboard?

  • I finally got the nerve to try this, but I can't get the key to go back on correctly. On a letter key, does the inner ring hook under the user-side silver tab before the ears go in the holes at the top? Or is that totally wrong? (The 'm' key is off, tricky writing without it, I c&p'd the letter to ID the key XD)

  • @CaffieneKitty WOOT! Never mind, my mistake was made obvious by my ambivalence toward making my motion forceful enough, it moved, it's on and I can M again at whim! MMMMMMM! \o/

  • thank you!!

  • Thank you! I was looking to buy a new replacement keyboard and am happy to have found your video instead :)

  • My key fell off and the hinge bit is on the key, not the nub thingy. What can I do?

  • ok so my "p" key sinks in at the top right corner, it dosnt feel as stiff?popy like the others, whats wrong an what should i do?

  • @MRshoz1 I would advice to take off the key and put it back on, that could already fix the problem

  • arghhhhhh. and i typed that on my macbook pro without an 'a' key

  • @MRshoz1 hahaha the very same reason im here.

  • Wow, You don't need to be a Genius to do it. Just have to be real careful and pay attention as you go. The video is pretty good. Had to play and pause a lot as to not screw up. The reason they show you without the key cap is so you can understand how it is put together. It is fragile and takes a light touch and proper sequence, just like in the video. Worked for me.

  • This is going to sound unbearably stupid, but do you need a special pointy thing to do this?

  • @CaffieneKitty You can also use a screwdriver ... so, no!

  • This definitely helped me. Thanks!

  • To all you guys with slanted keys and keys protruding out of the keyboard. It is because you have pulled the key off wrong from the bottom and the hinge has pulled up against the steel clip holding it onto the main frame of the keyboard. this makes the steel catch rise up higher than normal. So the key never looks the same when reattached.

You have to take off the key and hinge again and you will notice the steel catch is distorted and risen, get a lollipop stick and force it back to normal

  • excellent! thank you!

  • Thank you! Very helpful!

  • Last time a try and vacuum the gunk out of my keyboard. Had to search the bag for the B key lol

  • thank you! finally returned my space bar correctly.

  • The hinge on my escape key broke ,what do I do?If my mom finds out I'm dead

  • @Crystal123theLlama You need to buy a new one and replace it like shown from 0:00 to 0:40

  • Thanks for the video. After watching this I finally was able to remove an annoying bit of grit that was making the Z key less responsive. It was helpful to see that taking it off would not ruin the key.

  • This is a great video. Thank you so much. I had a little tiny pebble underneath my keys which kept moving around, making it hard to press whichever key it was hiding under. With your instructions, I removed my M key, took out the pebble, and replaced it. My keyboard now works like new. Thanks!

  • Yes thanks a lot! I have an almost 6 years old macbookpro (1st generation) and I was wondering how the keyboard was able to withstand my feisty pro-pianist touch. Well, the answer is, even this rugged thing – it fell to the ground countless times, looks like an old and beat up VW beetle and still works like nothing had ever happened – has limits. Since about 1 week, one key after the other is getting stuck. This video probably saves me, can't afford a new pc, not to mention a mac! THX!

  • Really helped me out. I could feel the R key wasn't pushing down appropriately. Found a hair wrapped around the key. Strange...

  • Excellent video!! Thank you very much for taking the time to make it!! My wife dropped her laptop and I have to replace the MagSafe Board and thought I was going to have to replace the keyboard. Thanks to your video, I realized the 2 keys and white plastic attachment things that fell off weren't broken and EASY to re-attach. Hopefully putting the new MagSafe board back in will go smoothly. TWO THUMBS UP!!

  • Thanks for this, just repaired one key ripped off by my 18 month old son and another I ripped off trying to figure how they work! :)

  • hi there, regarding the comment below... the same thing has happened to me and the G key keeps popping up at an angle.

Do apple sell the plastic bits separately for such a problem?

  • @gemsax No, but depending on your location you might find them on ebay searching for "MacBook Pro Key"

  • Good stuff! My ferrets ripped off the F and G keys on my boyfriend's keyboard. One of the tiny extrusions has broken off one of the white caps, so the G key doesn't sit in very well now, but at least it's attached!

  • Good stuff! My ferrets ripped off the F and G keys on my boyfriend's keyboard. One of the tiny extrusions has broken off one of the white caps, so the G key doesn't sit in very well now, but at least it's attached! It was getting a bit boring typing with the rubber nipples :)

  • thank you. this video just saved me a lot of bother.

  • i want a macbook so bad.

  • GOD DAMB IT THE

ENTER KEY IS A PAIN IN THE ass! HELP PLEASE STUPID ENTER KEY

  • @102gab It really is, but here is the deal

#1: put the white plastic hinges in first (ALONE)

#2: put the lower metal spring in the holes on top and bottom

#3: flip the key over and press them on the hinges

    Good luck!

  • AWESOME! You fixed my P!

  • thank you so much for this tutorial, saved me a fortune for a mac tech to probably do the same thing

  • I was just playing around my friends MacBook Pro to see how the backlit works. As I failed to put the key back again, I began to panic. If it wasn't for you and this video she would've kicked my ass and never let me on her macbook ever again. So a very big thank you!

  • Putting back the spacebar is a pain in the ass!!!. Ive been working at it for 2 hours and still cant get it. All the other keys arnt too bad removing/putting back

  • @loganfonseca It really is, but here is the deal

#1: put the white plastic hinges in first (ALONE)

#2: detach the ubber metal spring and attach it (ALONE)

#3: put the lower metal spring in the holes to the left and right

#4: flip the key over and press them on the hinges AND on the ubber spring

You should make sure, that the metal spring is as good as above the clips under the key!

    Good luck!

  • You have saved my 2 year old. . . .twice. Thank you so much!

  • Thank you, my Z key is now back in place.

  • now imagine the same thing without the key cap

  • go F yourself, busted my key with this!!!!!!!

  • Thanks a lot worked on my 17" MBP. My left CMD key split in two from much use, so after watching this I was able to switch it over with the right hand side CMD key. Called Apple Support, who to be fair was very helpful, was on the phone for about 15 minutes, and only advice offered was to drive 215 miles to my nearest Apple Store and get booked in for an Appointment at the Genus Bar! So probably just saved myself a few quid for a new key and about £30 in petrol! and a six hour round trip.

  • Thank you...

  • Spilled soda and left it for check up and cleaning. They found nothing and everything was still working. Now the keys are getting sticky. Would you suggest this method to be able to clean beneath the keys?

  • @mrtvi46 nothing you can ruin by using the method to clean the keyboard

  • @apfeltasten Great. Currently trying to get the keys off, but they won't detach. What are you doing with the tool? What's going on beneath the keys?:)

  • thank you

  • Too bad theres no telling you how to get the keyboard off but I managed to and when I put it back I fixed it all. Thanks man and if it wasn't for you I wouldnt know you had to put the rods into the slots before pushing the spacebar into place

  • nice video

  • @sweetvampiress69 I would replace it once and see if it's gone. Maybe it's just durty and hairy under the key.

  • Thank you! I took off my spacebar to clean underneath, and I couldn't get it back on. I figured it out after watching the end of this video.

  • omg... thank you sooooooo much!

the little white piece below got a little damaged (the prong on one side broke off when the rag i was using to clean my keys got caught under it) but with this fix i was able to re-attach the key and it works fine!

who knew trying to keep your computer in pristine condition could end in what was almost total disaster

  • five minutes of panic, four seconds to fix. Thank you wholeheartedly for the video!!

  • very useful...5 minutes ago i was panicking like crazy! Now everything's good. :p

  • is there available the plastic spring to change my key bottom @ any apple shop??

  • @momonpick

Well they could take it from any MacBook Pro Keyboard. But I doubt they will do that for you. You wanna make money by selling you a new keyboard!

  • This video just saved me $170. I knocked off my "A" key last night and the local Apple store wanted to charge $80 for a new keyboard and $90 to put it in. I watched the video, pulled the white lifter off the key cap, put it on to the keyboard, replaced the key cap. Five minutes, done. Works like a charm. Thank you so very much.

  • 고맙습니다.

  • You vid helps a lot but It would have been better for me if you filmed your F3 key change as close as the other keys.

The pieces are so small and the video quality a bit blury. I can't realy see what you're doing here.

  • Thank you very much. My Command-Key is juice-glue-free now :D

  • thank you so much!

  • Thank you SO MUCH! I just got up, for a second, to let my dog out, and I set my screensaver (and thought I was safe), but my toddler came over and removed my shift key.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!, I had spilled Ice Tea (not good) on the keyboard. The computer is fine but the keys were all sticky and the movement to press them wasn't as smoothed as it used to. I was able to remove each key thanks to your help and I cleaned them all!.

One question though, some of the liquid got a little dipper inside the computer, passed some small holes that I can see behind the keys and it's not letting the back light shine as it used to, any suggestions?, advice?

  • lol wish i could say the same...my down arrow key has been mucked up and i tried to remove it but i broke off the little rubber thing underneath, so now i cant get it back on lol

  • Awesome - that really helped. My "G" key was really not registering much. I found some gunk underneath the little white rocker under the key though. Got rid of it and now I can
