  • Can u keep these guys in 3s with neon tetras ??? Somone reply

  • can u keep them with other breed of puffer fish even the smaller ones dwarf puffers?

  • can u keep these fish with shrimp?

  • @johnnyfisalive no puffers are known to eat shrimp, smaller fish, and anything that's smaller than them

  • how can u tell which is male and female?

  • Dont these fish need salts?

  • i have instant ocean salt, and when i mixed it and put it in the tank alot of it just went to the bottom. is that what happens to you or did i not mix it good enough?

  • @metallicspades I used to have the same problem. The solution I found best was to take some warm-hot water, de-chlorinate it (with water conditioner) in a 2L clean ice cream pail. Then add marine salt and slowly as you are adding, stir the water with a spoon. This will dissolve the salt more easily. Sometimes after it's been sitting in a bag for a while, it hardens and the moisture goes out of the salt, making it harder to dissolve.

  • My puffer fish eats frozen peas! just pinch them first to get the peel off.

  • Hey is a Pufferfish tropical? and where can I buy it? Thanks

  • @HauntedVDream anything that wont be eaten by them. mollies are all i know of

  • @metallicspades Mollies are a good choice. Also, bumble bee gobies, which have great personality might I add, are also an okay choice. Apparently they are quick and feisty enough to take care of themselves around puffers. Gouramis are usually okay, but they won't be able to survive in brackish water tanks.

  • @HauntedVDream Larger pufferfish can be either tropical, or brackish, which means found in estuaries and deltas, where fresh river water meets salt ocean water. "Freshwater" puffers fix into the later category. You should be able to buy figure 8 puffers in most specialty fish stores. I live in Toronto, Ontario, and see them from time to time in Big Al's fish store chain, typically well priced and healthy.

  • What other fish can these puffers go with

  • @Eliissaa27 Figure 8 Puffers can go with any of the following successfully: Bumble Bee Gobies, Small Fin Mollies, Columbian Sharks, Mono Sebaes, Mono Argentus, Green Scat, Spotted Scats (be careful as these get quite large). They do not works will with angelfish, goldfish, bettas, or guppies (which they eat). They are notorious fin nippers, even to each other.

  • LOL AT THE LAUGH IN THE BEGINNING XD.

  • @bxzel0915 I know. I can be a bit of a kid! :)

  • what's the puffers feeding schedule? how much do u feed him in a day and how often? would i be okay with the frozen blocks and split them in half, giving him half in the morning and half in the evening?

  • @MissButterycup97 I typically fed them twice a day, just a pinch of dried krill or small freeze-dried shrimp. They are messy eaters, so I would suggest a floating feeding station to keep the tank cleaner. Once in a while I would also purchase a live snail, give the shell a good crack with a hammer, and drop it in the tank for them to eat as a treat, and to keep their beaks short and well maintained.

  • i love f8 puffers mine are lush and so friendly i could watch them 4 hours and are sooooooooo clever xx

  • is it possible to keep a figure 8 puffer in fresh water? because many other people say they thrive better in fresh. it's definitely up for debate.

  • @MissButterycup97 Some argue that you can, however they are mainly found in the wild in estuaries and delta (brackish) water. All Figure 8 puffers are wild caught, as they cannot be bred in captivity.

  • @MissButterycup97 puffers like these are definitely NOT fresh water. they're confused for being fresh water because when we catch them, they are usually in a fresh body of water on their way to more brackish water. and while they can thrive in fresh as young babies, they start to do worse over time. I have a baby figure 8 in brackish water and he's doing great! yeah i replied to myself, got a problem with it?

  • Hey at 0:05 , is that a bubble nest? Cuz bettas make those and i have a betta and it wanted to buy a tiny puffer fish (like yours) but the guy from the pet store said they cant live together. (pls respond)

  • @TheNorthernFury Not it's not a bubble nest.

  • hey i have a 30 gallon fishtank whit a 1 oscar and 1 pleco

i want a puffer how do i introduce salt to my fishtank ??? did my oscars is gonna die if i do that?

  • @joestar112890 those 2 fish will not tolerate the salt. If you want a puffer, get a seperate tank, or give away your current fish.

  • @joestar112890 Yes. Your oscars are fresh water fish. If you add marine salt you will kill your other fish. Puffers are specialty fish.

  • wat r they eating?

  • @zgoler123456 I was feeding them both freeze dried shrimp, bloodworms, and from time to time, a pre-cracked snail so their beaks can be maintained.

  • Nice fish! When you do a water change how do you know how much salt to put in ?

  • @drkingslend When doing water changes, you use what's called a hydrometer, which measures the specific "gravity" or salt content of the water. To add the correct salt, you add Marine Salt (such as brands Instant Ocean), NOT "aquarium salt" that is used to help with parasites.

  • can i put one or two of these in a 5 gallon tank?

  • how bigs your tank? i want to put a figure 8 puffer on its own in 30Litre tank but im not sure if i should. do they do alright living alone? the tanks 24 by 8 by 9

  • @ClaudeyBoy This tank was approximately 38 US Gallons. But figure 8's stay very small, but still can only be put in that small of a tank if you have lots of breaks in line of sight (as puffers are territorial).

  • very cool

  • I want a puffer fish sooooo bad!

  • get a fahaka puffer! i have one hes sooooo cute lol he even dances for food XD

  • How big is the tank and did the puffers get any bigger?

  • @CoolBre78 The tank is 38 US Gallons. Figure 8 puffers will not get any longer than 2-2.25 inches.

  • hi i just bought 2 can u plz tell me do this puffer reall puff out lol and do u need to brirish the water for this fish thx plz get back to me

  • Half fresh half salt means half the salt of ocean water. Brackish is the water around where a river joins the ocean.

  • can you put starfish in a tank with fake plants??? please respond

  • @skeezerzz I don't know.

  • @skeezerzz If you are unable to keep plants, you are probably unable to be proficient enough to look after starfish ;)

I wouldn't the way they eat what they want involves putting their stomach onto a surface, and I wouldn't want a starfish trying to dissolve plastic.

  • @drsquirrel0 Who said i wasn't lol..thanks for the help though but not sure if you are qualified to give me help i'll just ask a professional

  • @skeezerzz yes, sea stars do not need plants to survive, but they are very very VERY sensitive creatures, just like all echinoderms they are very sensitive to salinity changes so you have to make sure your tank is perfect for them to thrive

  • @skeezerzz yup

  • @skeezerzz Sure, why not?

  • are they friendly to the other fish. thanks

  • what you feed this puffer

  • How happy everybody is!!

  • @mehdan2 Yes they were. My favorite pets to date. They are very intelligent, and would swim to meet me every morning for feedings. Very cool, if not rare, pet.

  • how many gallons is ur tank and wha tkind of filtration do you have?

  • @keithj2222 This tank no longer exists, but it was approximately 30 Gal. Technically that's a little small for 4 puffers, but I had plenty of plant cover so they hardly got territorial. I had a Whisper 30-60 overhang filter, with both carbon filtering and the normal refuse filters. I changed them every month as suggested by the manufacturer.

  • Comment removed

  • How may of these can live in a 10-gallon aquarium? And can they live with 5 small crabs?

  • about 1-2. deffinetly no crabs, they will kill them then eat them

  • i had one puffer in my ten gallon a while ago, and deinitely have it without any crabs, and no other fish as well, the puffers can be aggressive fish and are known to eat little fish that can fit in their mouthes

  • @LiberalHunter72

Nope. Puffers are carnivores that primarily feed on crustaceans aka crabs. So unless you are okay with the crabs being dinner for your lil puffers, its a terrible idea

  • nice puffers

  • is the molly alright in a brackish tank because mine are really sencitive to water change

  • Yes, Mollies can be kept in Saltwater tanks. I've successfully bred Mollies in Salt Water and they tend to have more color quality.

  • how big do they get? i need someone who has a mature one and can tell me. and if u could also recamend a freshwater puffer thats can live in comunnity

  • MAX size for them is 3 inches, most puffer fish are aggressive so therefore it's not recommended to keep them in a community tank with fish that aren't aggressive.

  • but he did. and i had a puffer but my baby bro killed it. it stayed away from my other fish. i was ganna get it a companion but. it died

  • @ WaldoElectronics: There's always exceptions so that's why i said "most"

  • How are they doing now?

I had mollies with baby green spotted puffs and they at all the food first.

Four figure 8 s is enough to balance with personalities and food. That Molly may be okay now but do t be surprised if he is lunch one day.

  • @Nathan1097 Unfortunately, these fish all died a couple of years ago. This is an old vid of mine.

  • @Nathan1097 Actually, the molly outlived all of them! He did get nipped from time to time, but he died of a rare blood disorder, not due to the puffers.

  • they do better in brackish

  • you shouldn't mix puffers with more puffers and other fish....especially in that tank. they will attack each other

  • @Andydag904 Never had a problem. I think this was due to lots of plant coverage that broke the line of sight and any aggression. They did have a hierarchy, and often hung out together. It was very cool to watch them posture, which basically is them going head to head like they are kissing, then the submissive curling their tail and swimming away.

  • buncha fatties.. lmao. thats all mine want to do is eat.. every time you walk by the tank.. they follow and wait. haha.

  • Are the plants real or fake?

  • @Kaimanfisch The plants were fake. Puffers will rip up live plants mostly.

  • @janfow365 They fooled me

  • i have a gsp ( bert ) a fig8 ( devin ) & a bumble bee goby ( l.b.g.) in a 55 gal and their doin' any ideas of what other type of puffers or other fish can put with them.

  • @ItzReece You may do well with a couple of silver scats, but they get quite large, so be careful of space.

  • ok lets clarify brackish for everyone. saltwater is around 1.025 sg (specific gravity), which is the measure of dissolved salt. brackish is around 1.000 sg, which means it does have salt, but not as much as saltwater. only brackish fish, which live in brackish water in the wild, can live in brackish aquariums. this would include figure 8 puffers, mollies, scats, columbian sharks, etc.

  • someone please reply how is it half fresh half salt does tht mean both salt and fresh can live in it

  • No , 3 kinds of water , fresh , salt and brackish .

Brackish is not totally fresh and not totally salt is on the middle of both .

And actually in particular this kind of Puffers (Tetraodon biocellatus ) are strictly from fresh water .

    Btw nice Puffers. :)

  • not true, some live in brackish streams in asia, they are a brackish puffer.

  • Mmm , if that is true I just wonder why on every site I did search ( more than 8 including wikipedia) before I wrote the previous message , says this specie belong to fresh water and is able to support some salt ???

Not offense here , just trying to clarify to what kind of water belongs this specie nowadays .

  • nobody really knows...im keeping mine in freshwater and its fine..

  • they can live in fresh but better in brackish

  • Actually as the figure of eights reach maturity they NEED brackish to survive. Ignorance is no excuse for cruelty

  • low salinity brackish... 1.005

  • no it means fish that originated in rivers perhaps by the ocean .

  • no it means that it has salt water in it but not as much as pure salt water.

  • @iPhOnDeHelper No. Fresh water is fresh water. This means water from the tap, with dechlorinator in it. Salt water (called Marine), is a very complete salt water/nutrient mix. This is like the water you see in tanks with coral reefs. Brackish water, is water similar to water you find in deltas, where fresh river water meets salty ocean water. So the water is technically fresh water w marine salt added.

  • my puffers wont swollow anything. they chew it up and spit it out. ive tried krill and brine shrimp. Any suggestions?

  • they like snails quite a bit, try those.

  • i tried them and they worked but the next day, one of puffers killed the other one and then died the next day.

  • dang, you are scaring me with my puffer. haha

  • HII =)) Very nice=))))

  • i had some and they killed my oscar it was terrible they first ate his eyes out T-T

  • I have 6 of these and they attack my glass catfish

  • HELP my 8 figure got finned nipped by my other puffer and damsels. It has a cut in its tail and about half of its fins are shreadded. I have it in a breeder box which also works for aggressive or injured fish. Is this ok and how long can i leave him here?

  • my gaurami killed my puffer : (

  • how many gallons is your tank and what other fish is in thier?

  • will these be ok living the first 3-4 months of their life in freshwater then ill upgrade to brackish?

  • not really. they only need.08 salinity so a 25 dollar box of salt will last a while. If you have mollies, guppies, or platies they will be ok in the salt water for 3-4 months. you don't need anything special besides the salt and a hydrometer (20 bucks) for a brackish tank.

  • The need snails or shelfs to survive!!! No joke!! Without their teeth will grow steadily until the cannot open their mouth anymore. So they will starve to death!!!!

  • That's what happened to our puffer fish. He died last night and he was not eating

  • i just head they need hard alkaline water any idea what that is

  • ya can someone tell me if it would be ok to put two in a 2.5 gallon tank

  • Two puffers? Or mollies? Either way, it wouldn't end too well. Figure 8 puffers need 10 or 15 gallons minimum tank water, and mollies are about the same. Two would probably do OK in the 15-gallon set-up, but I suggest you do your own research.

    Hope that helps :)

  • can u put them with coommunity fish plz respond

  • is it normal for a new porcupine puffer to be rather still at the to of my tanks, i have had him a couple of days now and he dont do much, feeds great tho !

    thanks

  • How big is the tank?

  • They are cute..I got three tonight with some birthday money..dude can anyone give me some advice? How much room do they need? How much do they usually eat? I bought "freeze dried" blood worms....they are in a really small one gallon air circulating tank..(didnt know any better!) Any advice??

  • Well first, honestly, your tank is too small for, well, pretty much anything to live happily. Second, these puffer fish need alot of room or else they may get stressed and start attacking each other. bloodworms are a good food source, so you should stick with them. The worms have a lot of protein, and puffer like the figure 8 need more protein then most fish. They also like eating snails and shrimp as snacks! Id suggest putting them in at least a 20gal tank and you'll be fine!

  • are they saltwater fish? do they fight with other fish? how big of tank do they need?

  • They are not aggressive towards each other? I just started keeping two pufferfish a week ago, I had them in separate tanks, but found they went through too many snails so I gave the 10 gallon to the snails so I wouldnt have to keep making trips to petsmart:) they are so cute! You sound so happy:) Cute little family of fish:)

  • Hey, nice F8's! Do they not attack your mollie?

  • I have 5 Balloon mollie's in my tank with 2 kinds of puffer fish and they don't kill each other or even chase around. After researching I found out that as long as the puffer fish are babies then they wont be aggresive and kill other fish.

  • I used to keep my Green spotted puffer with three mollies and they did excellently, though she (the puffer) did get a bit aggressive during feedings, but that is to be expected with puffs.

  • Hi, nice Puffers, they look very healthy, please, would you like to answer me a question?, What kind of snails do you give them?, I used to have one puffer, but it died, I tried to feed him with some apple snails but they are too big for them, and I have seen here in youtube that some people feed them with smaller snails, very small, like the ones in norareef`s video, if you know them would you tell me their name please, thank you, and keep your puffers healthy, they look great.

  • Thank you! One of them died recently of an internal parasite. Made me very sad. Your LFS (where you bought the puffers), should carry snails appropriate. Always buy small round shelled snails, as snails that are too large or have thick shells are impossible for puffers to break. Sometimes I would take a hammer and lightly crack the shell on a feeder snail to help out the puffers. Do NOT use snails found in the wild, such as from ponds or lakes, as they have parasites which can kill your puffers.

  • Hi iphone12302,

The Pacu, Jack Dempsey, and the algae eater are all freshwater fish.

Brackish fish are very rare and hard to find unless you come by one by chance. There are few species in the aquarium trade considered brackish. They are: Figure 9 puffers, Green Spotted Puffers (also known as GSP's), Mono Sebae and Mono Argentus (also known as fingerfish), archer fish, columbian and high fin catfish, chromides, and livebearers (like guppies and mollies). Most others are fresh water fish

  • sorry, i meant figure 8 puffers

  • im 10 and have a lot of cool fish i will show you my vid and are those freash water fish?

  • a jan if i buy a figure 8 puffer are they harder to take care of than a GSP?? do you still have to break that tooth that the have???

  • F8's are much easier to care for then GSP's. GSP's have a very aggressive temperment, and grow much larger then Figure 8 puffer fish. GST's at full size need a tank at least 45Gal! GSP's can grow to almost 6" in length! You don't have to break their teeth. Puffers are like birds, they need something to gnaw on to keep their beak or tooth from growing too large. All this requires is food with a shell - crayfish or small round snails. Be sure to clean up their waste after as they are messy eaters.

  • can i use a siphon gravelcleaner for cleaning a fish tank with sand

  • You can use a siphon gravel cleaner, however to fully remove the dirt from the sand you will need to remove it, clean it using a non-food cullander under running water, and place it back in the tank. If you have a smaller tank with a lot of tank, sometimes it's easier to keep doing water changes, and clean the sand and all ornaments at the same time, then replace them into the tank.

  • one in the 10 gallon would be fine though? i heard that they dont need company and are pretty independent? it would not get lonely they said

  • they have also told me that they dont care much at all for company and are territorial as it is

  • alot of people have told me that two in a ten would be perfect do you think that is too much?

  • Yes. The puffers are territorial and would begin to attack one another eventually. Not a good move to make.

  • can i use a siphon gravelcleaner for cleaning a fish tank with sand

  • Yes you can.

  • alot of people have told me that two in a ten would be perfect do you think that is too much?

  • Someone plz reply!! I have been told by pet experts and I am planning to put a figure 8 puffer(grows to 2.5 inches) by itself in my 10 gallon aquarium. They can be fine by themselves and are not very sociable as it is and will be very happy by itself in my 10 gallon. Is this true and is there any more room for adding any more figure 8 puffers?

  • 1 puffer is fine in a 10 gallon tank in theory, however you wouldn't be able to put any other fish in tank, and he/she would get very lonely. I would suggest nothing smaller then a 20 Gal, so then you could put in something small like an orange chromide or a gobie to keep the puffer company. Those two species can hold their own against a puffer.

  • where do you get the pond snails from

  • You can get them from any large chain fish or pet store. Do NOT gather snails from beaches, as they are contaminated with chemicals from the water and will kill your fish.

  • 3 teaspoons of marine salt( 1 teaspoon= 5 galllons) so it can be half salt and half fresh?

  • No. You need an instrument called a hydrometer, and you need to know the specific gravity (salt content) in order for the puffers to be okay. They can adjust to varying levels of marine salt, however it is far from half/half. That will kill anything. Even the ocean is not that salt. Look up the correct salinity on Badman's Tropical Fish website. He has the correct gravity levels for a brackish puffer tank. I don't know the reading off hand, so please go there.

  • can 2 of them live in a 29 gallon

  • Two of them can probably live together in a 29Gallon tank, no problem. Just to be sure to have a lot of rocks and plants (use plastic plants, as puffers and other brackish species will eat live plants like chocolate). Also, please use sand, not gravel in your tank, as puffers like to zip along the bottom and can get their bellies scratched if you use gravel.

  • can i also feed them ghost shrimp??

  • Yes

  • what do GSP eat?

  • Most brackish species can eat freeze dried shrimp (that's what I feed my puffers), bloodworms, and fresh feeder snails. The snails you have to feed them once every month and a half or so or their beaks (the big tooth they have in their mouth) will grow too large and will inhibit them from eating. Puffers of this kind also love fresh foods, fresh non-frozen shrimp, and krill which you can buy as eggs and they will hatch in the water as live food.

  • I would suggest you Google "Badman's Tropical Fish". They have a website which has excellent information on starting a tank, and specifically information on puffers and starting up a brackish tank.

  • so i have to feed them snails so it can break there big tooth that they have in the front of there mouth and alsocan i feedthe gost shrip!!

  • is there any fish that can live with the green spotted puffer

  • GSP's can live with most of the same species that get along with Figure 8's, however, at some point sooner then later, the other fish will suffer an unfortunate fate. The GSP will eventually outgrow and kill all the other fish in the tank. Most people who have GSP's have them with gobies or a figure 8 if you want some variety. Scats can hold their own as well, but they will grow too big to be in a tank with a GSP that's any less then 90 Gal.

  • srry for all the questions my brothers wants to get a figur 8 puffer and he wants to know how to take goooooooooood care of it.

  • No problem. He can ask all the questions he wants. I don't mind helping at all. I just want to make sure he knows what he's getting into. Keeping puffers is a little more difficult then the average fish tank, that's all.

  • what about a goby violet(look it up on youtube) there are like 12 inches long and they live in brackish water???

  • Certain brackish fish can live together. GSP's are a moody bunch, and will not do well with others in the tank at all. Gobies can do well with puffers in general, such as figure 8's, but the water must be brackish.

  • I have a tank with the following: Silver Scats, a Columbian Shark, and some figure 8's. Other fish that will fit well in a brackish tank are Mono Sebae or Mono Argentus (if you have a huge, huge tank only), gobies, chromides (green and orange varities), etc. There are not a whole lot of species that go well with puffers. Scats, which can grow to close to 5-6" in size, need a large tank. I have two in a 35 Gal, and that's pushing it.

  • And, you can't have any other fish in the tank, as puffers are territorial and will kill any other fish, especially GSPs. You also can't have fish with big fins, like guppies, angelfish, or goldfish in the tank with them - they will kill them immediately. That, and a goldfish cannot survive in Brackish water.

  • so if i want a green spottedpuffer fish i have to have a tank that is 40gal!!!!!!

  • In short, yes.

  • wow!!! that is huge!!! wow that is a very big fish!! ummmmmmmmmmm i dont know what to say lol

  • when i went to walmart yesterday(in the fish section) i saw green spotted puffers and some lady asked for one and one of the employees grabbed the fish net and picked it up out the water and put it in the bag!!!!!! how long would the fish live after puffing up???!!!

  • Two things:

Green Spotted Puffers are NOT figure 8 puffers. They are two very different species. GSP's grow much much larger then Figure 8's. In fact a full grown GSP would need it's own tank of over 40 Gal to support it. (It grows up to 9-10 inches long!). Figure eights only grow to about 2.5" or so at the largest.

  • As to Walmart, their employees are not trained on how to effectively and appropriately handle pets and fish that they sell. Most fish carried at Walmart die much sooner then they should due to improper water treatments, handling, and feeding. Also, Walmart employees are not trained on how to handle fish in the store. They are paid minimum wage for long hours, and are not the best source of information.

  • The GSP that the Walmart employee took out of the water via net will probably die in days, if not sooner.I would strongly suggest you go to a reputable private or large chain fish store only, discuss what you'd like to have in terms of a tank, and they can give you appropriate instructions and equipment. Also read up on the species you wish to buy, either in books or online, BEFORE you buy anything. Most fish are sold as juviniles, much smaller then they will be in adulthood.

  • sorry for all the comments but what knid of vaccum is it a special king for sand??

  • No. If you go to your local fish store, and tell them you want a suction gravel cleaner, that will work for sand. You can get them in various lengths depending on how tall your tank is. They usually consist of a large tube, with a plastic hose and clip attached for siphoning water into a bucket or sink. Some of the fancier ones come with a longer hoze that screws onto your kitchen sink. They are pricey, and range anywhere between $20-$250.

  • okay thats cool thatnks for the information but what do you do when you clean the sand (whats your daily routine) and how big of an ice cream container.

  • My tank is small enough that I do a partial vacuum, then once a month I break down the tank and clean the sand by hand.

2L ice cream container is what you need. You also need to clean the tank within a 4 hr window if you don't have a air pump that you can cycle amongst the containers. any longer then that, and they will sufficate.

  • lol i was reading to fast and didnt see the 2L

  • so how do you take them out of the tank and clean the tank i going to get some soon please tell me everything i need to now because i want mine to live there full long life spand 5-6 years lol so please

  • To take figure 8 puffers out of the tank you need to use a clean plastic ice cream container. They can't be lifted out of the water or they will puff up and die. You can net them, but you have to put the container half in the water and let them swim out of the hand net into the container. You have to make sure that they don't get lifted out of the water.

  • Also, you can't put more then one in a container, or they will attack one another while you're cleaning the tank.

Also, puffers need a tank with sand on the bottom or they will scratch their bellies. Cleaning sand can be difficult. You can vacuum it with a suction cleaner from your local pet store, but you really need to take the sand out and clean it by hand every 4-6 weeks at the most.
