Ruhe in Frieden lieber Cesare!
What I love about singers like Siepi and his contemporaneans is the fact that not a single note goes out if it's not completely supported by the whole body. Piano or Forte!!!!
Also a superb collaboration: Not only is Siepi's phrasing perfection, the maestro and Siepi are absolutely one (the way Siepi delivers the passagework at "puo sol veder" mirrors the lower strings precisely!). Siepi's almost a cello himself! I'd so much like to know who this fine maestro is. I know this is from Munich, and I've been wracking my brains trying to think what Munich conductor's around in 1970 with a white beard. Please, if anyone knows who it is, I'd be so grateful. Many thanks.
The conductor is Alberto Erede. He recorded many complete operas, especially with Tebaldi in the 50's. I agree with you about the superb collaboration.
Surely one of the greatest Verdi basses together with Pinza. As for the aria, Siepi's performance is indeed wonderful, but consider also the renditions of Christoff and Chaliapin.
What more to say, than I could die for this. What a noble and wonderful voice.
What impresses me the most is, that it looks so easy and relaxed for him, nevertheless it's full of emotions...unbelievable!

One of the greatest arias ever written for
the bass voice. Siepi is a subperb,
world-weary King Philip! The drama is
in the voice with an economy of gesture
and dramatics. Thank you for posting!
