without frets. It's like a double bass, only its electric and played horizontally. It allows for a nice legato slide up or down the neck. Sounds REALLY good. It also has its other pros and cons vs. a fretted bass.

Actually, you can - a lot of fretless basses (like the Fender Jaco model that Geddy uses) have a polyurethane coating that is hard as glass, and with bright steel strings (like the Rotosound roundwounds that Geddy uses) plus an aggressive right hand technique (like Geddy does) will get you plenty of zing, and nobody will notice you're playing a fretless unless you start playing it to make it sing.
