Heh - the manual zoom ring was actually one of the reasons I got this HS20 ... not so smooth for video, but much better for stills. Since it works even without the camera turned on - you can pre-dial the zoom you think you'll need to get the shot quicker.
d manual zoom also gives u silent operation while filming ..dats preety much useful

the manual zoom / focus ring made me pass on this cam, instead purchased sony hx100v =)
