@Fourtyb4five It's a plugin. It takes one click to enable it. Application that provides desktop effects is called Compiz. You can configure how your OS looks and behaves.
Search on YouTube for compiz and you'll see all the magic you can do with a little imagination. :)
so linux lets you wave your shit around....now i really want to go out of my way and get it haha...it seriously looks like it works the same exact way a mac does except with a cube feature...cant believe this video was 4 minutes of waving apps around..
LOL this is from 2006 and now we in 2009 and still linux go better and better i guess from 2012 to 2014 linux will be better more users and alot of ppl gonna know about it join us guys from mac and windows to get over pay for everything control urself dont make them control u ROCK ON PPL
pc is awesome you cant be a gamer and own a mac, even if you get a program like bootcamp to let you run windows programs you still get the viruses so whats the point in switching again?
@mjm55 well im pretty sure that were gonna start seeing more games out for mac....its pretty sad that games are pretty much one sided....i love the stability and output results of my new mbp but i can only play hacked games i hate it...just cuz you can play more games on a pc doesnt mean theyre awesome...
OK so we got a flashy desktop with all it's wonderful Compiz Fusion effects.
Main problem I've found with using Linux as a desktop OS. Is the sound architecture is an absolute mess. There is ALSA, OSS, Pulse Audio, etc,. I install a package like Skype, and then it asks me which sound architecture I want to use. How should I bloody know? I then have to spend time dicking around just to find a combination where the microphone works.
One does not get this sort of problems with Windows or OS X.
If you guys really knew anything about computers you guys wouldn't be arguing over Linex and Mac OS. Linex is a command line based OS and Mac is for more of the creative types. Every os have a different job. Windows is for basic stuff, Linex for more complex users, and Mac for creative bastards like me. For videos and movies. How are you guys going to sit there and act like you know everything about all the OS's. You don't, a real technician knows what I said is true.
If you would know the Linux OS (the Linux kernel is the operating system because Linux is not microkernel but monolithic kernel) then you would know that Linux is counted as commandline and graphical OS because Linux OS includes support for X11.
And the OS does not mean anything else on this case than what applications has be written for it. Like if you have Java, X11 and Qt ported to Linux (as they are) you can run software what needs those.
X11 is not a Linux. It is a window system what is ported to multiple operating systems. The OS need to have support for it to have fast graphics. Without coded support, you do not have hardware accerated 3D. The Linux OS (= a kernel) has X11 support coded to it. But X11 itself is own software outside of the OS (Linux in this case as well). Even Mac OS X*s operating system XNU has support for X11. Even it looks crappy because it does not support Cocoa.
It' really for Video Graphics Users. Unless you like that type of O.S..
In reality, it is not going to compute any faster for your regular needs. For Example: Going on the Internet, Watching videos/movies and that's mainly what most of common people use.
Playing Arcade Games is the real deal that your computer has to computate all the aspects of parameters in order for it not to glitch Or stammer.
We have not found an Operating System this is impregnable. Because of Worldwide Hackers!!!!!!!
You know that hackers means good guys (white hats) (security advisors, guru software developers and so on) and crackers (black hats) means bad guys who writes mallware, attacks to others systems and steal information for own purposes?
And the graphical desktop (any user interface) is not part of the OS (Linux kernel). You can have what ever you like kind a user interface running top of your OS, only changing the outlook of the system.
Good looking out for proving our Thesis on this topic, TheFri13. At least, we know that we have intelligence in the You Tube Community.
So you're saying that it is a add-on to the Operating System? In my opinion, I thought that this was specifically a Stand Alone Operating {Program}System.
What is your opinion for this specific Graphic Interface Application?
"So you're saying that it is a add-on to the Operating System?"It is not a add-on to OS. When talking about monolithic kernels, the kernel itself is the whole OS alone. All other software on the userspace is just software. They can be system programs, application programs or software libraries and so on. When talking about Linux, all software on the user mode (different address space) is outside of the OS.
That is just a normal desktop environment with Compiz Fusion top of the OS and other soft.
stiill i prefer Mac OS... 10 stars for Snow leopard... one of the mac's fastest OS's to install.. 45mins.. leopard took 3hrs.., from tiger if i remember correctly
2. Download Ubuntu, burn it on cd and install/boot and use it via Virtualbox
3.Become member of one (or more) of plenty Ubuntu communities and start learning bout linux.
3. After you have seen the real OS, you will know what to do with windows.
Btw: As I was also helped by other people when I was a beginner, feel free to ask me if you have questions about ubuntu or this particular desktop theme etc.;)
windows is the best.. and is this video actualy howing the desktop of the linux OS surly doing all that at once takes alot of custumisation and time to get running properly, let alone the specs required for this?
Actually you'd be surprised on the specs. You can do what s/he's doing on a P3 with a Geforce2 and less than 512 megs of RAM. Compiz requires only 32 megs of vram for the graphic effects. Check out the minimum requirements of Vista Home Premium (the one with aero glass) for comparison.
2 yrs ago this video (orig. by kroneage) encouraged me to install ubuntu linux on my machine.I got used to it very quickly and it was fun! In short: IF I boot windows today, then only virtually via virtualbox running on my linux machine.
awsome interface, i think am gona get linux. but i mean when downloading software, is it compatible with all like Xp Vista and Mac, and can yo use the regular internet explorer
Linux software is compatible with the Linux os stuff just as Mac software is compatible with Macs. You can download stuff for linux, but you will have to use the shell to install it.
Depending on which distrabution you get, you should get firefox with it which is better that ie anyway.
This video was one of the reasons I switched my illegal Windows XP copy (lol) to Ubuntu. It's great and as you all say, the computer doesn't work slower at all (much faster than my tuned up XP). Hail Tux!!
munk666tlen is right. I confirm it with my old P3 with 256MB Ram and Radeon 7000 64MB DDR. This vid was first posted on kronage's page, look it up there. And all you linux haters, we really have no care for how productive you think linux is, we'll make and use whatever we like, and if it hurts to see something good come out of it then freakin sneck up.
i agree with some people, ok my desktop can to this really sick animation, but come on, ITS ALL FOR SHOW, how can this thing be productive? microsoft couldve easily done this, but its not their main objective, if you wanna see some really cool 3D animation watch Finding Nemo for all i care, personal computers are made for us to be MORE productive, how can anyone be productive with this? but it looks cool nonetheless. and darkjuju is definetely right, this feature is just a waste of RAM.
No, its for giving the drawing job to graphic card instead of CPU, ans as a side effect you get outstanding effects. Of course they use more power, but its still nothing comparing to vista.
Probably, but you would need a newest supercomputer having at least as much power as Deep Blue. Vista works slow with it's so called "effects", it needs 2GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, newest graphic card. XGL can run on 400MHz, 256 RAM (twice enough) and GeForce 2 Ti 64MB. Amazing? MS engineers suck like hell.
It's making job MUCH faster. I've used it. Now back on standard Linux X11 I miss rotating desktops, looking behind the windows, etc.
> waste of RAM
As I said before, you can run it having 256 MB of ram (most of which is free) - compare it to vista using 400MB of RAM CONSTANTLY, in no-3D-effects mode. Try turning it on. Once again: MS sucks :)
it's so exciting! wow.. who the fuck cares? wow, look how I can change desktops as it looks like a 3D cube!! shocking! whoa! oh look! my little widows are like rubber! breathtaking!! lamest shit I have seen.
