Rita Hayworth is a lovely actress, maybe even a good dancer, but she's an awful bellydancer. So jerky and almost no real hip movement or fluidity... i mean it's a veil dance... I don't see why they couldn't have have cast some one like Samia Gamal, famous egyptian actress and bellydancer. or heck, even just have her choreograph the dance! seriously, youtube samia gamal, same time period, great artist :)
The intro where they show her face behind the veil was kinda disappointing, they could have chosen a better angle and she could have make a more seductive or mysterious expression, but then it gets better, Rita is a woman who clearly knows what seduction is.
All the opera singers in the world cannot compare to Rita in this role--they could all take lessons from her as they lurch around creakely trying to do the Dance of the 7 Veils (and should not attempt it all if they are over a size medium). Rita is divine!! The gowns/set unbelievably lush, sparkly and lucious. And Charles Laughton is his usual scene stealing campy superb self with a mere widening of the eyes. I like him almost as much as Miss R.
I agree that Rita is the best Salome for the Dance, but you cannot deny that this role was written for an opera singer. Strauss chose to create a truly well rounded character that required a variety of talents to perform, and we should respect anyone who attempts this role. To expect both a flawless singer and flashy dance routine is asking a bit much. To take the dance out of context, Rita is perfect. But she wouldn't dare to attempt all that this role truly calls for.
BACK IN THE DAY THAT RITA COULD HAVE ALMOST ANYTHING SHE WANTED WITH THAT GORGEOUS FIGURE AND FACE...THIS WAS ONE HOT DANCE BACK THEN!!! LOVED THAT MOVIE!!!!
A little older than what the part calls for but still incredibly beautiful and only Rita Hayworth can get away with it. Properly termed the Love Goddess.
@armorArtichoke: The Brigid Bazlen version is NOT a Dance of the Seven Veils. She does not even use any veils at all. Therefore, the two different dances do not even compare. In any event I much prefer Rita Hayworth and her version.
@SultrySeeker Of course there is a veil in the Bazlen version, she's wearing it. The dances aren't the same but both are based on the same story, and both are meant to be seductive (this one is a striptease). It derives almost nothing from it's roots, probably because of the era of the film's production, and as a result the motions and expressions are abrupt and awkward to watch. Some people are into that I'm sure.
And to say that Rita Hayworth is not a talented dancer, in this video, as well as many many of her others is simply absurd. Rita is also a lot more beautiful than Brigid IMHO. But as they say, to each his own. BTW who is they?
@armorArtichoke The idea of the Dance of the 7 veils originaly is to show women's nudity. If this was a real DOT7V the dancer was supposed to be naked under the veils.. however.. this is a movie and the original version of this dance is poluted.
Discusting. Ok she's wow with her looks but heck, she doesnt look any better than an ill whale thrashing around in most of this scene. This for some that still have doubts. Is in fact based on a bible story from many years ago. For those that say they didnt stay in the orignial story line.. what movie producers/writer ever captures everything right? Haha Rita yes your mom is selfish, and unbelievably cold. WHy else would she make you dance for her man?? Dah!!! for the head of John the baptist.
@pminner Neither Jesus nor Moses were white guys either, but I don't see you posting on vids from The Ten Commandments or Ben Hur. Do you go around to Disney movies and post the same thing? Get over it, dude. It's a movie.
@pminner None of them were anglo-saxon white either, but you didn't comment on that inaccuracy, did you? Do you go around to Disney movies and post the same thing? Get over it, dude. It's a movie.
@iDreamOfJulia Salome was the one to ask for the head of John the Baptist but in the bible on Matthew14:8 it says that she was instructed by her Mother before to say that. So the dialogue in this scene is a little off.
It's also the time. Take Bettie Page for example, or any pinups of the age - the submissive cutesy cheery bouncy rosy awkward-yet-graceful little girlish seduction was what got men off back in the day - honestly, back when women were still widely considered the weaker sex in America. The modern seductions of Angelina Jolie and Madonna and Shakira would've been borderline repulsive or threatening to men due to their power and intensity.
I thought this "Rita Salome" was fun and timely...I see many of my contemporaries in the same light, since someone once asked me why, if I lost the keys in my house, I was looking for them on my doorstep...I said that the light was better there.
Well... I do think Rita looks a little too contemporary in this. But that is just a quibble. The fact that Herod would ask for/allow this traditional "for the groom only" dance to be done as a party entertainment speaks to the debauchery of his reign, so it works perfectly for this. I'm sure the choreography itself isn't completely authentic, but then this wasn't a documentary on ancient court life either. All in all I enjoyed seeing it. Fun to compare it to the Zeffirelli version...

Hate to break it for you, but the seven veils dance was invented for the story of Salome. You know, the girl who dances for the king? This girl? It was a play made based on the bible story that created the dance- so this scene is where it should be. =P

@thefranster14 Wow, I'd suggest you do a little more research the origins of this dance. Educate yourself and maybe you won't look like such an ass next time. & don't be jealous of Rita, you wish you looked half that good on your best day sweetie.
Some people complain here that the scene doesn't look authentic and that Rita is like a girl next door. Well, for Herod and his court there was nothing exotic in Salome and I think that the director's idea was to create an image that doesn't look too exotic for us. The most important thing is that in this scene Rita excellently combines in herself innocence and sexiness, the factors which turn on men like nothing else.
I wonder if any of you bible students might be able to help me out with a question. Their clothes always look so beautiful, in Biblical times who did their dry cleaning.
Thank you for uploading this dance sequence. The choreography is superb and what a stunning costume and not forgetting Rita Hayworth's dancing ability. Oh to have been in her shoes!
(weeps) why does Salome have to always be presented as sexy! She was just a pure and pretty 15 year old girl that lost her purity by the eyes of Herod.
In the biblical story, it was Salome's mother who told her to ask for John the Baptist's head. Herod was fond of John in spite of himself, and had no choice but to carry thru with the beheading... he'd made the mistake of telling Salome she could have anything she wanted for the dance.
Herod had married his brother's wife, which John condemned. Salome is his niece/stepdaughter. Salome had no feelings about John one way or the other, but her mother did; she didn't like John speaking the truth.
@glorys9 Um, yeah. It is in the Bible -- perhaps you should read the story before commenting. Where do you think the story came from, for crying out loud? Shakespeare??
The opera by Strauss shows some really sick and wrong stuff. Herod has a thing for his niece / stepdaughter. Salome has a thing for John the Baptist. She kisses the head, and Herod, sickened, orders her crushed to death between the shields of the palace guards. This here scene with Rita Hayworth is squeaky clean compared to that.
it's worthwhile to read up on Oscar Wilde--like at Wikipedia--and then one of his stories--like Portrait of Dorian Gray. It seems rather stuffy--but it's a chilling little tale. Wilde loved to rock the boat and puncture the pretensions
@wrybreadspread Oh, I know. Wilde's work is just fascinating. I loved Portrait of Dorian Gray -- it gave me the creeps when I started to think about it.And Salome... eesh. If that's not rocking the boat, I don't know what is.
@wrybreadspread ....so, I wonder how to find out the 'real' story of Salome....hmmmmmmmmm! we knw religionists always change things to their pristine liking!!!
I'm having a helacious time trying to upload a reply. accoring to Wikipedia and Flavius Josephus, Salome married her uncle Philip, who died, then her cousin Aristobulus and had 3 sons
The shade was supposed to be strawberry blonde, which is a sort of red and blonde at the same time, but it does look more blonde on screen. She looked fantastic in this dance.
It seems that through the years many religions have adapted the Bible according to what befits they. In the original story Salome dances for the head of John The Baptist. In Hayworth's version she dances to save him. Hollywood in those days had to portray their leading ladies in a positive light. But still you can only tamper so much and old John still lost his head.
Now let me get this right - SALOME was a 16 year old girl dancing for her step-father's enjoyment; while her mother watches and encorages her husband to lust after her daughter! This is what we psychologically term a disfunctional family!
@drbuzzmann I know it!! And they made a famous opera out of it as well. There is truly a camp horror quality to this Bible story. Its like a car wreck--you try to turn away and end up enjoying it--in spite of yourself!!
The symbolism of the head piece penetrating the sheer sparkly veil in the bginning for just a moment can't be ignored...nice dance though but that beginning with the crown was painfully obvious.
Herodias is being played by Dame Judith Anderson (Mrs. Danvers in REBECCA and Big Mama in CAT ON A HOT IN ROOF, among other roles. Known mostly as a stage actress ( a MEDEA particularly).
Who is the actress playing Queen Herodias, Salome's mother...is she the same actress who potrayed the Empress wife of Nero (Peter Ustinov) in the 1951 epic "Quo Vadis ?"...she looks like her!
i really like rita hayworth i think she was beautiful, however i think that Brigid Bazlen had a much more sultry and exotic "dance of the seven veils". also bazlen was 15 when playing the role of salomé (salome was about 15 at the time) whereas hayworth was like 37?
truly beautiful dance. starts out so mysterious, and progresses very seductively and beautifully. I just feel so inspired by her beauty. I would have given her John's head any day! hehehe
I like a lot from 1:42 the way she move her body at the rythm, but sultry seeker is a little bit right...Itsnt Rita cause,is the way that she was coreographer(miss Bettis?)but any way Rita is all the time like a the sun of the scrren, its true isnt perfect her dance but you cant stop to watch her...
Rita is such a talented dancer! i saw this dance in the opera once, but this Salome couldn't dance like that! Rita can dance so much better! thanks for posting this scene!
I had to do an entire report on Salome for religion class! As much as I love Rita I didn't get that in this movie why they changed it so she's dancing to save John the Baptist rather than kill him.
Yes, I agree, they took a lot of poetic license in that movie. The movie was not that good, but anything with Rita in it is a treat, especially this particular scene.
Yes they took a lot of poetic license (since when has Hollywood been well-known for sticking completely to the facts and not embellishing the story? ;) ) ... but Rita is fantastic. Such an amazing talent, and such a natural beauty too.
yeah, when i found out the liberties they took, I almost get a heart attack. It's totally killing the character of Salome. But I do love this dance very much. Seriously, no wonder she got the head of John the Baptist.
what people should try is setting her dance to the song "Ojos Asi" by Shakira. Seriously, it suits it so much better than the lame music in this one. The dance looks all the more seductive, too :D
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For me she is more jumping around and running around then actually giving a good move of belly dance... It-s pretty rare to see her really dancing something :s
I tried to see it your way, hollywood is presenting more of an amateur ballet-like dance than what it's trully supposed to be a graceful middle-eastern dance with beautiful body movements. Sure, Rita is beautiful, but she ruins the illusion that the story is supposed to take place in the middle-east. Her outfit and entrance are the only parts I like. Her movements are often overdone, ungraceful, and almost ridiculous, such as in 2:36 and in 2:57 and in 3:20.... It's quite a disappointment.
TheTrapeze: The Bible does not say that Salome performed a bellydance or even a middle-eastern dance.
Matthew 14:6
On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
Maybe Salome just did a striptease, or a lapdance.
Whatever Salome danced must have pleased Herod, just like Rita does me in this dance.
XD You do realize that the story of Salome did take place in the Middle East, though, so it most likely wasn't this type of dancing. I'm not saying you shouldn't like it, I'm just saying I don't see what's to like... everyone's entitled to an opinion.
You forget that the details of Salome's actual dance are not specified. This is so because the actual moves must be left up to whoever portrays her in film and theatre
I'm sure that whoever wrote about Salome didn't detail the dance because he was thinking about how he wanted one that would portray the dance to do so as one desires and not because there was probably a specific way that a woman would dance in a court. Boy, that writer had some forethought.
I agree with you that this is not bellydancing...the music isn't even Oriental...However, this is not being advertised as belly dance. It was simply a part of a Hollywood film production. At that time authenticity was not high priority, obviously. We can, at least, appreciate Rita's beautiful and sultry dance for what it was. What bothers me more is how the facts of the Biblical record was changed...Salome was complicit in John's death. She agreed with her mother to ask for John's head.
That's absolutely true, she did agree. In fact, wasn't she the one who asked for it directly?
And about the dance, I can appreciate the costume and the beauty of the actress, but many of her dance moves are a bit too quick and harsh to be as sultry as they could. I say this as a dancer.
Lol, she's blond.....

@ysbaddaden2003 Rita looks just fine as an exotic sultress to me.
SultrySeeker 1 year ago
(weeps) why does Salome have to always be presented as sexy! She was just a pure and pretty 15 year old girl that lost her purity by the eyes of Herod.
DieSonneSinkt 1 year ago
@DieSonneSinkt: What, you do not think that Rita Hayworth could pass as a pure and pretty non-sexy 15 year-old girl?

In the biblical story, it was Salome's mother who told her to ask for John the Baptist's head. Herod was fond of John in spite of himself, and had no choice but to carry thru with the beheading... he'd made the mistake of telling Salome she could have anything she wanted for the dance.
Herod had married his brother's wife, which John condemned. Salome is his niece/stepdaughter. Salome had no feelings about John one way or the other, but her mother did; she didn't like John speaking the truth.

@mundymanor .... bible...ah ....hmmmmmmmmmm! how do we know this is true...! from the 'bible' we read this!!!?
glorys9 1 year ago
@glorys9 Um, yeah. It is in the Bible -- perhaps you should read the story before commenting. Where do you think the story came from, for crying out loud? Shakespeare??

The opera by Strauss shows some really sick and wrong stuff. Herod has a thing for his niece / stepdaughter. Salome has a thing for John the Baptist. She kisses the head, and Herod, sickened, orders her crushed to death between the shields of the palace guards. This here scene with Rita Hayworth is squeaky clean compared to that.
wrybreadspread 2 years ago
@wrybreadspread Well, it IS based on the play by Oscar Wilde, and the Victorians could be surprisingly twisted.
CandidCandide 2 years ago
@CandidCandide
it's worthwhile to read up on Oscar Wilde--like at Wikipedia--and then one of his stories--like Portrait of Dorian Gray. It seems rather stuffy--but it's a chilling little tale. Wilde loved to rock the boat and puncture the pretensions
wrybreadspread 1 year ago
@wrybreadspread Oh, I know. Wilde's work is just fascinating. I loved Portrait of Dorian Gray -- it gave me the creeps when I started to think about it.And Salome... eesh. If that's not rocking the boat, I don't know what is.
CandidCandide 1 year ago
@wrybreadspread ....so, I wonder how to find out the 'real' story of Salome....hmmmmmmmmm! we knw religionists always change things to their pristine liking!!!

Blonde isn't really Rita Hayworth's best haircolor, is it...
arwenivy77 2 years ago 2
The shade was supposed to be strawberry blonde, which is a sort of red and blonde at the same time, but it does look more blonde on screen. She looked fantastic in this dance.
Oreon207 2 years ago 2
@arwenivy77 she had black hair, and was persuaded by hollywood to make it red.
glorys9 1 year ago
not a true story. A biblical one and we all know how corrupted the bible is
kuh3333 2 years ago
It seems that through the years many religions have adapted the Bible according to what befits they. In the original story Salome dances for the head of John The Baptist. In Hayworth's version she dances to save him. Hollywood in those days had to portray their leading ladies in a positive light. But still you can only tamper so much and old John still lost his head.
Oreon207 2 years ago 2
@kuh3333 oh you are terrible bad and this is not biblical

today, this would be called a striptease...not seven layers of fabric, but two flimsy items.
renerevuelta1 2 years ago
If you know anything of the story of Salome then you'd know that it was a strip tease is possibly the least disturbing part of this clip.
haytrav3 2 years ago 10
Yeah, a striptease and a nude body or semi-nude body is harmless last time I checked. She wanted a severed head! That's freaky.
ShamusMacGuffin 2 years ago
The severed head from a religious figure, to kiss and make her own, and was willing to dance for her step-father for it....

Now let me get this right - SALOME was a 16 year old girl dancing for her step-father's enjoyment; while her mother watches and encorages her husband to lust after her daughter! This is what we psychologically term a disfunctional family!
drbuzzmann 2 years ago 20
Queen Herodias would probably have out and out prostituted Salome out to Herod if it meant getting rid of John the Baptist!!
blkmambo 2 years ago 2
@drbuzzmann I know it!! And they made a famous opera out of it as well. There is truly a camp horror quality to this Bible story. Its like a car wreck--you try to turn away and end up enjoying it--in spite of yourself!!

The symbolism of the head piece penetrating the sheer sparkly veil in the bginning for just a moment can't be ignored...nice dance though but that beginning with the crown was painfully obvious.
Duszka 2 years ago
You may be more Freudian than the filmmakers intended to be. This whole scene is pure Hollywood. Less middle
eastern than bellydance in a club. More
flamenco.

Herodias is being played by Dame Judith Anderson (Mrs. Danvers in REBECCA and Big Mama in CAT ON A HOT IN ROOF, among other roles. Known mostly as a stage actress ( a MEDEA particularly).

Who is the actress playing Queen Herodias, Salome's mother...is she the same actress who potrayed the Empress wife of Nero (Peter Ustinov) in the 1951 epic "Quo Vadis ?"...she looks like her!

i really like rita hayworth i think she was beautiful, however i think that Brigid Bazlen had a much more sultry and exotic "dance of the seven veils". also bazlen was 15 when playing the role of salomé (salome was about 15 at the time) whereas hayworth was like 37?
mrjames9999 2 years ago
doesnt really look like belly dancing but ok

It's a bad fusion of flamenco and belly dance, with a generous dose of striptease thrown in for good measure.

I had to do an entire report on Salome for religion class! As much as I love Rita I didn't get that in this movie why they changed it so she's dancing to save John the Baptist rather than kill him.
LuvBytesNBruises 2 years ago
Yes, I agree, they took a lot of poetic license in that movie. The movie was not that good, but anything with Rita in it is a treat, especially this particular scene.
SultrySeeker 2 years ago
Yes they took a lot of poetic license (since when has Hollywood been well-known for sticking completely to the facts and not embellishing the story? ;) ) ... but Rita is fantastic. Such an amazing talent, and such a natural beauty too.
Luubelaar 2 years ago
yeah, when i found out the liberties they took, I almost get a heart attack.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
For me she is more jumping around and running around then actually giving a good move of belly dance... It-s pretty rare to see her really dancing something :s

But just becaouse she is an excellent singer and actress doesn't mean she is perfect on belly dancing :S

TheTrapeze: Why can't it just be Rita Hayworth performing Dance of the Seven Veils in the movie Salome? In that regard it is magnificent and SULTRY.
SultrySeeker 3 years ago
I tried to see it your way, hollywood is presenting more of an amateur ballet-like dance than what it's trully supposed to be a graceful middle-eastern dance with beautiful body movements. Sure, Rita is beautiful, but she ruins the illusion that the story is supposed to take place in the middle-east. Her outfit and entrance are the only parts I like. Her movements are often overdone, ungraceful, and almost ridiculous, such as in 2:36 and in 2:57 and in 3:20.... It's quite a disappointment.
TheTrapeze 3 years ago
TheTrapeze: The Bible does not say that Salome performed a bellydance or even a middle-eastern dance.
Matthew 14:6
On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
Maybe Salome just did a striptease, or a lapdance.
Whatever Salome danced must have pleased Herod, just like Rita does me in this dance.
SultrySeeker 3 years ago
XD You do realize that the story of Salome did take place in the Middle East, though, so it most likely wasn't this type of dancing. I'm not saying you shouldn't like it, I'm just saying I don't see what's to like... everyone's entitled to an opinion.
TheTrapeze 3 years ago
You forget that the details of Salome's actual dance are not specified. This is so because the actual moves must be left up to whoever portrays her in film and theatre
EmpressJudge13 2 years ago 2
I'm sure that whoever wrote about Salome didn't detail the dance because he was thinking about how he wanted one that would portray the dance to do so as one desires and not because there was probably a specific way that a woman would dance in a court. Boy, that writer had some forethought.
TheTrapeze 2 years ago
I agree with you that this is not bellydancing...the music isn't even Oriental...However, this is not being advertised as belly dance. It was simply a part of a Hollywood film production. At that time authenticity was not high priority, obviously. We can, at least, appreciate Rita's beautiful and sultry dance for what it was. What bothers me more is how the facts of the Biblical record was changed...Salome was complicit in John's death. She agreed with her mother to ask for John's head.
fatdanios 2 years ago
That's absolutely true, she did agree. In fact, wasn't she the one who asked for it directly?
And about the dance, I can appreciate the costume and the beauty of the actress, but many of her dance moves are a bit too quick and harsh to be as sultry as they could. I say this as a dancer.
TheTrapeze 2 years ago
I was a dancer too, my dear. Bellydance was my thing~ I didn't care for that phrase at 4:39-4:45, but that's about it.
The rest of her performance was pretty cool.
btw, do you like bellydance?
fatdanios 2 years ago
