can i just bring my bike up to you for a going over lolol im joking but thanks for the video i brought a suzuki marauder and lets just say the bloke hdnt washed it fro what looks like an eternity so will be starting with vieo one and going through step by step (goodbye social life for a weeken) but great videos mate :)
Excellent series! I am a professional detailer (cars, trucks and vans) and was looking forever to find a how to guide on motorcycles. Same concepts, but I've learned a lot!
After you get it all up to snuff how often do you clean your bike? Just when it gets dirty or do you wash it regularly every couple of months? New owner here so just trying to figure it all out, love the videos though, very helpful and thorough.
Indeed, I'd love to know what some workable USA-market substitutes for the Auto Glym products might be. I have a Bandit 1200S that needs this treatment rather badly.
Great job, I am faced with an old gixer which looks like it has NEVER been cleaned! I'm sure it will take me a full day so before putting in all the time and effort I want to use the right kit. Could you give a definative list? I am particularly confused on wd40, water based and oil based cleaners. However I understand if you can't be bothered to go into as much detail to help me as you did with helping your blade back to its former glory.
great series of videos i almost want to clean my bike now. What would have finished it off nicely is if you'd got on the bike at the end and cruised off into the distance.
Thanks nick, best videos I've ever seen. really useful.
What do you think of using brake cleaner for cleaning? I'm told its an excellent method, spray on, and wipe off with a rag or cloth to get rid of years of build up. Obviously afterwards, one could use WD40.
My bike is only a 125. So I'm not to fussed about being extremely meticulous. But in the 6years it's been on the road, I don't think its ever been cleaned properly.
thanks nick. Yeah, I'm not exactly going to run around the bike spraying it willy nilly. just for parts that I happen to take off the bike and to clean etc..
i.e the swingarm. Thanks again! I'll be looking at your vids again when I come round to taking apart my bike to give it a clean.
you make 1-man use of that bike stand look so easy :)
Actually I have a question about laquered parts such as forks legs etc. Of course once the laquer gets chipped, the dreaded white lurgy sets in. Would it not be best just to remove that laquer and polish the bare metal? and if so can you recommend a way to remove the laquer?
Hi and thanks, I always use paint stripper to remove laquer, but I take my wheel and mudguard off first to make sure I don't ruin any other paintwork. You can always re laquer the forks after they're stripped too.
Well, Autoglym did very kindly send us a box of goodies, but we asked them because we use their stuff anyway so I guess that's fair. As for WD40, I just think it's ace and I use it for all sorts of stuff. We didn't ask them for anything but perhaps we should have done! When we showed Autoglym the DVD though they weren't best pleased about all the WD40 shots! Whoops, they haven't spoken to us since!
The hoors... to hell with them. Though after watching all your bike cleaning clips I will be getting myself some Autoglym products so they didn't do too badly. Do they even have a similar product to WD40?
Thanks, Nick! I did know all your tips, but it was cosy to watch you work while i was joining a cold Tuborg! Greet all The great folks in your super country!
If WD40 and a scrubbing brush doesn't work then nothing will, usually sprockets corrode over time so can't be cleaned. You'll just have to wait until you replace them to get a shiny one!
Hi Just bought my first bike after passing test Suzuki GSR600 so wasn't to sure about cleaning, the videos are great I have bought a selection of the dvds, one question you use a power washer what is the max pressure you would use on cleaning the bike
I always set the nozzle just off full and take care not to point it directly at the chain, flaky paint or unlaquered stickers. Most domestic power washers aren't powerful to do any damage anyway, but there is no 'max pressure' just apply plenty of common sense to the job.
Nick, top job on the vids from a fellow cleaning freak! What's your view on ACF50 or FS365? Are they worth the extra cash? My concern with ACF is that although it claims it's not water soluble and stays on the bike, will I be removing it with the weekly wash? If this is the case I'd rather buy a cheaper product and apply it weekly. Also, it will cause me much pain to leave the bike caked in muck trying to convince myself the ACF is preventing any corrosion. Thanks mate, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the feedback, if it's not too bad, use a nylon scrubbing pad as it won't damage the hard chrome coating. If it's bad you can use fine wet and dry paper. This will damage any coating on your forks and cause more rust in the future if you don't keep polishing them. Believe it or not race forks often have tiny abrasions in them on purpose, this allows oil molecules to sit in them and reduce stiction. So you can tell people that's why you've done it ;)
Great job mate and the most enjoyable to see!But i imagine that doing it must have been very difficult. Can you please make a list of what you have used and photos of the product and where we can apply then and where not?A video would be great help.
do you have any idea when the show should be appearing on our screens and on what channel, or is it too early to tell. iv bought myself a 10yr old bike, a honda cb500s in bright yellow. its my first bike, i love it already and really fancy givin it a weekend or so to really bring her back like u and the blade :D
impressive collection of vids, the proof is in the pudding, bike looks almost new. why dont u go on telly, call the show "how clean is your motorbike". u mite even find worse bikes !!! :O
Kind words matey. We're working on a series for the TV it will be called 'Project NC30' or 'Project Fireblade' where we take a 15 to 20 year old bike and bring it bang up to date with a whole series of mods. Should be good.
i just hate it though when you clean the bike (i am quite obsessive aswell) and then you have to go out and ride either when its raining or when the roads are wet
I'm using Autoglym products in the main because they're all safe and very well tested:
Autoglym: Motorcycle Degreaser, Vinyl and Rubber Care, Motorcycle Cleaner, Metal Polish, Super Resin Polish, Motorcycle Protectant, Alloy Wheel Seal, Instant Bike Shine, Fast Glass.
I watched all 5 episodes. Brilliant. I enjoyed them and have a few techniques to take away, as well. I just wish there were comments on how to get at cylinder head fins on air-cooled bikes. They are the worst things to clean.
i'm a big fan of cleaning with WD40 too, I have an Enfield bullet and have no car license so ride all year round, every day.
I find it impracticle to clean my bike after every ride in the salt, so now I just give it a good 'all over' squirt with WD40.
Although it picks up a bit more road crud, it wipes off no problem come the spring and I have no corrosion.
