It's easy to make critical remarks about Zizek's talks. Read his books before you pull the chain. As for pyschoanalysis being a waste of time, I point you to Adam Curtis's doco Century of the Self, for an interesting discussion on the influence of pyschoanalysis on society. Whether you agree with it or not, it's working on you right now.
Slavoj Žižek, the current heavily promoted "leftist" who seems only to talk boatloads of shit about left movements, progressive politics, and populism. This guy seems both full of shit and manufactured.
@johnqueism Good question. Go to any college city (DC, Chicago, NY, Phili), etc., and sit through a seminar or two from even a marginally known published social science academic, and the level of analysis with respect to the current state of American politics you will encounter will be leagues beyond that which is spouted by Žižek... Yet, this guy seems to be popping up more and more throughout the net as well as on the networks. Thats a tad odd, and smacks of some sort of concerted effort.
@yanikv Add to that the general logic of his weak arguments that, for the most part, seem deeply and consistently critical of most things progressive. The guy seems like a shill,...or an "academic" with no more integrity than the local purveyor of a three-card-monty game down the the street.
@yanikv you act like zizek is detracting people away from important thinkers. imo it is just the opposite. zizek's persona and references to pop culture attract a broader new audience to important ideas. compare derrida, who was once asked a question about sienfeld and was too mortified to answer it. maybe it was a stupid question, but zizek would never let a stupid question get in the way of engaging an audience.
@nerfmyaccount Very interesting point to which I concede. However, he is still a douche who knows very little of hardship...and that privileged dismissive perspective comes out in his polemic.
@yanikv He doesn't aspire to be an analyst of American politics. I can't read his books yet, but my understanding is that his contribution consists in applying psycho-analysis to the macro-level of society and ideology.
@yanikv As for his beliefs, I think he sincerely doesn't believe in most concrete existing socialist ideas and proposals, which is why he ran for president of Slovenia as a right-winger in the early nineties. But he also acknowledges capitalism will lead to disaster. So what he does is challenge underlying beliefs, for lack of concrete measures to propose, and psycho-analysis is an appropriate tool for this.
@Ollie9402 great...im not sure I can think of something more useless than psycho-analysis...not even masturbation. And he ran for president of Slovenia? Wow! That would have sucked for those people if he would have won any power. The man is without real ideas or real solutions... just another elite (wholly unaware of hardship or real work) spouting drivel.
@yanikv Well, of course, if you no first hand experience with psycho-analysis, it's hard to think of a reason why it can be useful, because it's about the sub-conscious.
@yanikv I don't understand what makes you think of him as elite, though. He seems like an average person to me, apart from the fact that all he does is read and write. I think he's all hung up on theorising in a narrow area of thought because he has an autism spectrum disorder. But he makes jokes to avoid being seen as bourgeois. In Yougoslavia, he was unemployed, like he says, and he witnessed the siege of Sarajevo during the civil war. So I think he probably does understand hardship.
@besuschrist Disappointing but not surprising. Makes me wonder if perhaps every time I've seen him hyper on what I thought was neurons firing madly he was in fact just skiing.
I think Zizek is in fact as far from the dumb uneducated american left that looks up to him, as their political enemies, they only dont realise it, as they apparently dont really read his books and he doesnt spoil the fun.
Zizek, after a Great flow about how he hates anti semitism and then something about Humanity I think, when he's done, he looks to Rose, and poor Rose, can only say " I here you".
