Hey Red, do you know any decent Shaung Dao basic technique dvds? I'm not in martial arts any more but still practice on my own and have a hard time with the basics.
They are real WUSHU swords. I have to agree that wushu swords are not the best quality for fighting. They are not thick at all. But what is cool about them is that if you know how to use them well enough, you can deflect with them fairly decently even being flimsy as a soda pop can.
Its kinda like bruce lee at the end of the game of death when he is fighting insanto.
Flexibility vs fixed. I dont believe the saber was ever really designed as a force meets force weapon IMHO.
btw... they cut pretty damn good if you have a good cutting technique. I almost cut a toe off one day with this exact pair.. dont ask me how... I was doing something thoughtless.

"real" is a relative term here, I think, IMHO
These are "real" wushu swords, meaning they are very thin and flexible, especially the end half of the blade
That's not to say that you couldn't hurt yourself or someone else with them
The thin, flexible blades are also flat and not the shape, weight, sharpness nor rigidity of actual battle ready, or 'combat steel' swords
I think the shape and rigidity of a combat steel sword would make more of a 'whoosh' as you put it.
BUT, HEY, COOL moves!

Absotively!
there is a video on Youtube here somewhere showing someone testing out a Wushu broadsword cutting water bottles, etc.

Those are all combat grade steel wushu swords tho

NO, the specific video I am referring to is of a WUSHU blade, the floppy kind, and NOT a combat grade weapon
It still cuts
just do a search for
"wushu sword cutting"
and you will find it
OBVIOUSLY a combat grade sword cuts, but I was surprised at how the WUSHU one does as well.

perhaps Ill just make another cutting video with one then instead of a 5 dollar katana. :D
ive never really tried to hit anything with them as I love them so dearly lol
