I think a "Brady Bunch" religious view on suffering suggests that if you do good then good will happen to u. But it's not true.
There may be something deeper that transcends circumstance that keeps people believing thru suffering. I don't think all people don't ask why? I think they may have found something deeper that sustains them in Jesus.
jesus doesnt sustain anyone. the *belief* in jesus is self-sustenance. nice to believe a giant is behind your back, helping you out. just like hypochondriacs believing in the potency of a sugar pill. only difference is, is that you can actually see a sugar pill.

Suffering necessitates the belief in god. If we didn't suffer, we wouldn't need god. as long as there is suffering, there is a need for god. I don't think this is a deep spiritual connection. But the true effect of a god should be to solve suffering--and i dont think that suffering will ever be solved (especially when well-deserving people suffer), so i cant believe in god. And i dont buy in to the fatalist argument of "its gods plan."

I think that this song lets an open door for reasoning and could be that a lot of people misunderstood it, but maynard doenst want you to get caught on what he is singing here, it's just his deep feelings expressed on a song that is shocking for those that only criticize and judge but for me are just expressions of a wounded man...5stars

I think a "Brady Bunch" religious view on suffering suggests that if you do good then good will happen to u. But it's not true.
There may be something deeper that transcends circumstance that keeps people believing thru suffering. I don't think all people don't ask why? I think they may have found something deeper that sustains them in Jesus.

jesus doesnt sustain anyone. the *belief* in jesus is self-sustenance. nice to believe a giant is behind your back, helping you out. just like hypochondriacs believing in the potency of a sugar pill. only difference is, is that you can actually see a sugar pill.

your rite. The act of belief in belief itself can be self sustaining.... to a point. I have no doubt some people are like that. But to dismiss the fact that a deep seeded belief in "God" cannot help in suffering means u don't beleive in a "God". Thats ok. I do, so does Maynard.. i think something deeper, spiritual can be connected with in our hardship.

Suffering necessitates the belief in god. If we didn't suffer, we wouldn't need god. as long as there is suffering, there is a need for god. I don't think this is a deep spiritual connection. I think it is the way we justify suffering to ameliorate it. But the true effect of a god should be to solve suffering--and i dont think that suffering will ever be solved (especially when well-deserving people suffer), so i cant believe in god. And i dont buy in to the fatalist argument of "its gods plan."

Look, you are not thinking right, the belief in a God, as you think, ain´t, in my case, the easy way out, it´s a real pain in the ass, the self doubt, to really try to understand the meaning, the..., you know, it´s hard, you have to know very well what you believe and constanly seeking for answers. The easy way is to be agnostic, atheist... you´re brain doesn´t try anything.. meanless. So fuck you.

Personally I find challenging pointing out the ethnocentrism in the notion that there was or is a "GOD'S chosen people".Nowadays that makes me an "antisemite". I was raised as if Christianity offered the real truth and that others were just superstitious.Well guess what,it's all superstitious nonsense...imho. This song made no sense to me when I was a Christian (I actually broke my CD in half because I thought it went against God before I actually knew it did - I had the edited version and thought he was actually "thanking" god.). Now that I've abandoned religion, it makes sense. :)

It's cool. I don't really define myself under one label. I've got a few videos talking about discussions I've had with my dad (Methodist) about religion and Atheism. It's amazing what all you can see when you've opened your mind that you couldn't see before.

This song makes so much more sence to me after my stepfather, who's served his silly church for 17+ years was rewarded by his benevolent god with terminal cancer. and i say the same thing to him that Maynard is saying to his mother. "He did it all for you."

I think that Maynard is just expressing his disassociation with her convictions. The lyrics are quite moving to me. He is angry that she believed so deeply in something that maybe really never saved her even in the end. Saw tool many times, never caught circle. Check out the website for his vineyard. I would lick Pax from head to toe.
