couldn't agree more, some criticize zeplin for coping many of the blues masters, but zep brought blues to the mainstream with their interpretations. thus opening up the opportunity for everyone to like the blues and look up some of these originals. I would have never gotten deep into the blues if not for zep.
zeppelin put their own name on those songs and got paid for them. willie dixon had to sue them to get paid for 'whole lotta love'. thats the difference. if it belongs to someone, credit them. if its public domain, say that. thats the difference. love zep though. very creative later on.
.RL Burnside's version of this tune is, I think, the best. This version, no offense, kind of sucks. Just because you are a pioneer and one of the first to record a genre does not mean your version of a tune is great

If you fancy seeing some music inspired by Bukka White this March, Alabama 3 are performing acoustic and unplugged!
They are performing in this stripped down acoustic way to show the songs in a format reminiscent of the people that have been their inspiration, chiefly the old Delta Blues players like Fred MacDowell and Bukka White.
about the only similarity between this and Hats Off to (Roy) Harper is the lyrics (which in its self is nearly entirely different). Other than that they both have a completely different sound. Plants vocals are different, the guitar is different. For fuck sake they are two different songs. Zeppelin is just playing tribute to their favourite blues artists.
youve got to earn thos dues to get down like that thats why zeppelin especially deserve no creedence. its bubblegum blues and sounds plastic.the doors on the other hand did eventually earn those dues thats why their stuff is more earthy and voodoo.. they can hang with the old guard..zeppelin are keich
If your as good as a band as Led Zeppelin there's no way that you'll be able to write 86 amazing songs they were bound to do some covers and get influenced by many other musicians. To all of the tools that are trying to take a strip off the best band in history, go fuck your selves and get a life.
Well said. You'd think that those who wanna jump on the Zep slagging bandwagon would *eventually* figure out the difference between music and lyrics (which, of course, bluesmen lifted from each other since well before Page and Plant ever met), but amazingly it hasn't really happened yet...
Be that as it may, being a Zep fan has allowed me to not only enjoy their output, but has opened me up to a world of great stuff like Bukka White, which I possibly wouldn't have found otherwise.
Oh absolutely - there's no question you're right about that. It's just that you're one of the few that actually differentiated between Page & Plant. If we were talking about Dazed & Confused, then absolutely Page should have the finger wagged at him. But for the blues influenced tunes, it really was mostly the lyrics that were suspect, if anything.
Then again, from what I understand, Willie Dixon (just to use an obvious example) was pretty notorious within the blues community for appropriating whole songs & taking full credit, mainly because he understood the business ramifications better than his contemporaries, and yet he really doesn't seem to get any heat because of that. Not saying that one is more egregious than the other, but it is interesting who gets flack & who doesn't, especially when it's really pretty common.
Yeah, Page is guilty of his share of thievery too. And that's interesting about Dixon, I'll have to look into even older blues songs to see how much he took. It would be amazing if he just did what Zeppelin did.
@rockstarracer213 And also, right at the end "Jake Holmes wants a small cut of the proceeds from the song he wrote and I stole? Well, he can get stuffed."

Love it, the best electric version is done by Fred Mcdowell. Epic bit of guitar playing.

Does anyone know if Lomax recorded this when White was in Parchman? or what year this song was recorded? Thanks.
irenevr 1 year ago
@irenevr He recorded this song just before entering prison. He might've jumped bail to attend the session in 1937.

Yeah, I agree with you BUT that still doesn't excuse Plant from putting his name down on the credits rather than the true lyrics author.
