I would be coming home on the A train going home to Far Rockaway from Brooklyn and I could not wait until we got out of that damn tunnel so I could get reception on my Walkman and hear "The Rap Attack"!
@NinjaKeet , for real son. Especially if you were from New York, Newark, NJ. , and Philly. I was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. and I would tape joints when I went to New York and my friends from NYC would bring back bags full of tapes. Big fun and good memories.
used to cut reel to reel tape to bite these styles at the local public radio station in Alaska. All we had was someone from the states usually brother from the military. We'd listen to KSKA public radio all night. It was our WBLS. But if someone had a tape from NY Oh my Gawd it was like being teleported into "The World". We used any equipment we could. Radio Shack mixer w/ fader pre write onto reel then cut all the pieces together. Then Marvel would maybe play it on KSKA 82-86
Man i got crazy tapes from Wbls with Mr. Magic even talking about the snow & all...I don't have the digital means to transfer it yet. The tapes are slowly rotting day by day, lol!
OMG!!!! This brought back so many memories. I lost my cassette tapes years ago, thank you for this! I am from DC, and used to travel to NJ/NY frequently to visit fam, and I lived to tape the "Rap Attack" with Mr. Magic, and when I came back to DC those tapes were like GOLD!! I almost shed a tear listening to this!!!! MAN!!(I'm a female)
@JRCnyc T La Rock and Mantronix got together for a T La Rock return. Wasn't too popular though. T La Rock faded off the scene but Mantronix had a hit with MC T on their LB, Mantronix.
This was a good time to be a B Boy in New York! Mr Magic was the fist hip hop DJ on radio(WHBI) I remember setting my alarm clock to 2am puching record and going back to sleep. The next day I would wake up to see what I had on tape. But the WBLS show was better then the WHBI one. Marly Marl was nice.
I rember livin in Tx, hearin mix tapes... of Wbls.... Yeah it was big... had no muzik there so mixd tapes in the airforce was it. K104 wasnt at that level yet... thats dallas ftworth. It was with biz markie, Jazzy jeff and the fresh prince.. and others mixd

Super Rocking Mr. Magic A/K/A John Rivas Spearheaded Hip Hop to the mainstream and he was and still is instrumental in its success... Mr. Magic A/K/A John Rivas May be gone but his stay here was monumental to Hip Hop. Mr. Magics contribution paved the way for everybody in HIP HOP Past, Present and future... Many tried to mask his flow but severally fail in there attempts
MR Magics Rap Attack Show Has NO Equal, it was a Hip Hop dynasty during its term here hands down...
I remember Beating up on KRS-1 and RED Alert with great impact during the RADIO Wars and the Bridge Wars stemming from that whole rivalry 107.5 WBLS RAP ATTACK SHOW HEADED by Mr. Magic VS 98.7 KISS Red Alert Show on 98.7 KISS both New York City Radio Stations... of course that always was a no brainer-- MR MAGICS RAP ATTACK SHOW ALWAYS WON Against RED Alert of 98.7 KISS FM including everybody else that tried to clone his show NO COMPETITION-No Equal For the Rapp Attack SHOW...
wrong. 'Bls was to raw. Marley got sloppy, but kept flava in his cuts and mixes. The only thing Red could do is mix and kick a basic scratch. He could not even transform. KRS was not Kiss FM.
If you said KRS was not down with KISS you dont know what u r talking about. As far as DJing Red Alert nor Marley Marl were that good compared to alot of other djs out at that time. And I dont care who won between Sparky d and shant'e. KIss played BDP so they won!
READ. I did not say that. I said WBLS and Marley were too raw compared to KISS. I said that KRS was not KISS (the composition of... what it was made of, etc). Try to kick knowledge again, maybe you will be correct in correcting somebody.

only if u guys knew. growing up in the projects this cat's radio station would be the only one playing in the streets of nyc. all over the streets of nyc. god bless his soul. true pioneer.
If rock stations can have dedicated stations in classic rock hip hop has had a long enough history to have a few stations dedicated to old skool hip hop.I heard someone on the radio in Miami request some old skool Lil Wayne now what are the multiple things wrong with that statement?
Could someone please bring this back on a 24/7 format? This brings to light the time when hip hop had a real identity. Mixing was done by skill with hands on the turntables and not some joe pushing buttons.

Mixtapes recorded off of WBLS NYC was a hot commodity in the South back in the 80s.
