  • wow. glad i came across your channel. i was just searching for into the wild footage but i believe im hooked on your movie making. ive taken on onewoman filming but never something like yours! you inspire. thanks

  • Check out my video blog as it features the same actors, it was edited by turrets sufferer on acid.

  • i saw him in guildford lol

  • Hello there sir! You did indeed. Thankfully I finished filming that river scene now that it is getting colder - that was freezing! You are one of the few people who know what is coming next in these blogs, as the blogs are a little behind me!

You should subscribe so that when the video comes out of me filming what you saw, you will get an email about it! :-)

    All the best

    Rob

  • you inspire me dude

  • Thank you sir! Are you into filmmaking? I look forward to seeing one of your films! :-)

  • poor gabby!! lol, tell her i feel bad for her!

wow this is so insparational i can't wait to see it finished.

  • wow you are amazing Rob

    gabby i love the snowman!

  • You need to set up one of those silly website where folks can donate as little as a penny, and that way we can all help you make sure you have what you need to finish out this project. WE ARE ALL WITH YOU ON THIS! WE LOVE THE LONELY FILMAKER AND GABBY SOO MUCH!

  • the truth is i would love to help by donating. I think what Rob is doing is one of the most inspirational things I've seen in a long time.

  • Right? Even if it was just a bunch of youtubers donating change and just a few bucks, it would add up! I know I would donate!

  • doing a take 15 times in the snow...wow...dedication

  • dont forget to save some money for post.

  • very nice videos bro. keep em coming!

  • Farts haha Rob, Rob, Rob... smelly git =P

But manky socks in poor Gabi's coat?! Evil! Tell her I sympathise fully.

The snow is disorientating you? Is that why you ran up the wrong part? Everything white... and the fatigue... Do not envy you having all those shots off cam! The trudging around alone must wear you out something rotten.

Still cheering your corner =D (with a gazillion others by the looks!)

  • Hello, im a filmaker (Amature) and im making a seris called Abduction, season 1 starts this summer. Proffesionaly shot, in HD, for youtube. Subscribe to my account now.

  • Quiet an adventure, u seem to have a lot of fun :) Is it a remake of jeremiah johnson? ;) R u satisfied with what u got so far? Good luck anyway, making a movie is a hard task even with the support of hundreds of ppl so on your own, wow !

  • Hey love what your doing can't wait to see the film! Wish I had a girl so willing to come along with me when I chase my weird dreams:) good luck man!

  • My brother showed me all your blogs a couple of weeks ago and i think its amazing what your doing!,and very cool lol. Im surprised no one has done this before..they probably dont have the guts! well done :) cant wait to see the next one!

  • I hope you guys wont get sick by the cold.Take care people! The Chalet looks so beautiful and comfortable :) God bless! You guys makes up happy.

  • WOW graet work mani ve been folowin along on all of your vids since blog 1 and im pretty impressed, i wish ur blogs would role out faster but i guess jugglin youtupe n makin ur own feature film youtube is at the bottom of the lsit lol goodluck

  • Thanks - yep these last two have been delayed because of crazy times! But it will speed up I promise. New one coming very soon.

  • Robert. I've been following you for the past few months now, kind of developed into a fan thing. I'm doing quite a lot of amateur filmmaking myself, and if I were to shoot a film on the budget you started with, I'd go for a Prosumer HD solution combined with Final Cut Studio as well. One question; for the visual effects shots (if any), will you be doing compositing, tracking, keying and the likes in Motion/Shake, or would you use something like Adobe AE?

Keep it up! Every vlog day makes my day

  • Good question! I'm planning on using Motion but am aware that I may resort to AE. Also Photoshop for mattes and cover ups.

Thanks for following my progress so readily! New one will be visible to see by tomorrow hopefully! (it's uploaded but taking a while to become visible)

  • Awesome! It seems like youre getting the hang of things now. I think I left a comment before on one of your other entries.. maybe... I cant remember. Anyway the chalet looks great! Is it expensive to stay in?

    All the best

    -Josh from NZ-

  • Thanks Josh. The Chalet belongs to my aunt. I kind of new about it when I came up with the location for the film... so nope. :-)

New blog is uploaded but not visible for some reason. Am working on it! :-)

  • You got me hooked now. I can't wait for the next one. I'm dying to make a short film, i will have my too kids to help me. I'll post a video of some clips I put together with my dads music. He was with the mothers.

  • Good luck with it. Let me know when they're up! :-)

  • This is the latest blog? Keep up the good work, you rock! Have you got a release date already?

  • Nope there is a new one - but it's not yet visible. It should be sorted by tomorrow!

No release date yet - soz.

    :-)

  • Lovin it, lovin it, lovin it! Keep up the suspense! Sexy tiger dress you are wearing there ;) Hope it is as much fun for you guys as it looks! Fandangletastic!!!! San x x

  • :-) Are you two going to Glastonbury this year?

  • We're wimping out on the Glastonbury, too much mud last year ... although by not going probably sods laws it & will guarantee sun. It's rather lame pussying out on a bit of mud and rain I know but hey ho, there's always next year to get drenched ;-)

  • Yeah it was quite bad last year - not quite as bad as '97 though. But I feel a sunny one coming this year... And you can still get tickets....bizarrely enough - seems like others are of the same mind to you! Well anyway. Maybe I'll get myself down to Devon after I've finished this - or see you in London. Say hi to Sandra for me.

  • Lovin it, lovin it, lovin it! Keep up the suspense! Sexy tiger dress you are wearing there ;) Hope it is as much fun for you guys as it looks! Fandangletastic!!!! San x x

  • FANTASTIC; I get the feeling the movie won't be as good as watching the dynamics between you two guys. The story behind this project oozes in inspiration for not only movie making but for living. This is a pleasant and friendly docudrama with a refreshing absence of self-importance and egotism despite your commercial intent for sharing. I just wish I had friends as interesting and stimulating!

Continue the enjoyment on behalf of those who traded freedom for the dogma of routine and security.

  • Loved your vids, as usual!! :)

  • you guys are freaking great. no despair ever crosses your mind, and you chose no easy location or storyline for your film.

  • whats a cheeky monkey, and whats a porkie? lol crazy british people :P

and im sure they wouldnt miss 1 bottle ;)

  • :-D A porkie is a lie - telling porkies means not telling the truth.

A cheeky monkey is a, well... cheeky monkey! :-)

And hopefully they wont miss 3...

  • Well when your rich and famous im sure you can pay em back ;)

  • Thanks Mate. I have been following this from Blog#1. You're an amazing couple! thanks for sharing!

  • I love watching these.

  • KEEP AT IT ! >: D

  • I missed why you can't drink them... I suppose I need to catch up unless you will tell? Love to watching keep it going.

  • Because it's not our house or wine. And a lot of it is very old and expensive :-)

  • going well by the looks of things.

  • Dont worry - it's all gonna work out xD

  • Very well done.. Great editing..

    Good luck on your project..

    Looks like fun..

    Keep up the good work..

  • even your youtube videos are so captivating. i cant wait for the movie! and your girlfriend is amazing too.. so cheerful.

  • Not sure a wild man in the forest has a steak knife... should be made of a sharp stone TBH.

  • There's a plot reason as to why he is using remnants of civilization - a kitchen knife would be what his father would have grabbed when he was a child before they fled up the mountains. Though yes, if there wasn't the back story that there is then it would be wrong! :-)

  • muy bueno!! haha gabi e o quarto fedido comendo macarrao!

  • El Mariachi and Clerks are just two examples of films that prove you wrong. If you read a little bit about Rob, like his bio, you'll see that he's a professional in this business with experience. And in case it hasn't dawned on you, this guy knows exactly what he's doing. :)

  • well, im not sure if he is aiming for proffecional standars or wether he just wants to make his ultimate home movie. praps we should ask him instead of just calling him arrigant!

  • eggbertsmith, you have issues mate!

When have you heard him say that he wishes to directly compete with studio financed film-makers?

The entire point of this whole project is to prove to others that you don't need money or technical support to be creative in film.

I challenge you to think of ONE film-maker who has never had to start at the bottom and fight his way higher!

I for one will be happy to seek out and pay money to see this movie!

  • he must be realy good for you to slag him in this way,Who are you Steven ,George or Robert maybe but then again maybe not. Not the most constructive of comments .

  • damn man your an asshole. way to crush the man's lifelong dream.

  • its an amazing experience either way, and your jealous- so pooh =o

  • Wow...bet this gets an Academy Award!

projects shot with consumer gear often do.

  • 99.9% of projects shot on high quality 35mm stock don't either. And you might want to point that out to Greg Harrison since his film November was shot on Panasonic DVX-100. By the way it won a Sundance award for, guess what... best cinematography.

    Ignorant and belligerent arrogance...

  • good $hit dude...you both r a comedy duo...lol...i cant wait for the final bit

  • Hope things are going SO WELL that you don't have time to Vlog for us. This is an amazing undertaking; hope to see the finished product.

  • Thanks - the next one is coming I promise! :-)

  • Now I'm starting to see the positive feedback in this vlog! But alas, I just started watching this...you got a strong head on those shoulders. Don't freeze it off!

  • very cool yo

  • this really is great rob!

it will seem like no time at all till it comes out! because we get to watch it step by step.

How are you going to show it when its finished? its not like your backed by a majour film company...although i wouldent mind paying a few quid too get too see the finished product!

    Good luck

  • Rob, i'm still really impressed.

I think it goes without saying that a lot of people are incredibly impressed (as am I) with your dedication and persstance with this project.

Every video that you post makes me more and more impatient to want to see the finished article.

    Keep it up mate!!

    -Ronnie

  • Hey, when is this film coming out? (Approximately, I mean..)

  • Ouch - hard question! When it's finished, which approximately I expect to be maybe August? But it could very easily take longer - or even go quicker... but I'll let you know here when and how to get it - when I know! :-)

    Best

    Rob

  • i think your girl friend is getting annoyed with you!

  • I love your dedication!!! Cant wait till next episode.

  • Have he finished it???

  • just wondering where is gabby from? she has such an interesting accent!

  • I was thinking the same thing, juletto, I started wondering if she was Italian with an adopted British accent or something...

  • Man, that snow fall looks incredible. The Chalet is quite nice as well. Keep it up my friends!

  • Enjoy watching the vlogs so much! Both of you are awesome... can't wait for the movie. Keep up the great work! and keep us up to date - much thx :)

    peace and luck :)

  • hi! :):):) fyi... Robert got limited backing and in previous log a relative loaned the cabin. believe me he is working on a shoestring and doing a fantastic job! .....

angelroompatti a cheering friend! gooooo robert!!! hi! Gabi... you are a great support! :):):)

  • hello :) "limited backing" from the bank of mom & dad I bet ~AND free loan of cabin in the alps come on ...loads o money .....

like I said ~no disrespect . he is doing a fantastic job ( I even stuck up for em against a hatefulcommenter !!)

just sucks that I got no money and loads of ideas !! thats all :)

  • :-) As it happens, I don't come from a rich family and my parents haven't given me a penny.. I made corporate films for 2 years which pay very well and didn't spend it. And I got a small loan. And an overdraft! :-) Free loan of the chalet does help though! :-)

Thanks both of you for sticking up for me! :-)

  • fair play :).. respect has just increased TENFOLD !

.... it was fairly high anyway tbh ~ half way up a mountain lone film making commands respect ...& now that the people know you worked hard to get to do this. respect will increase from everyone I'm sure .

if you want a dj for when you finish the film ...an after film party or whatever ...

it would be an honor ( free of charge , of course )

    respect .

    mm

  • You always stay positive and don't completely blow a gasket when things aren't going the way you planned. Keep it up! You're too cool!

  • You can't solve the problem if you blow a gasket! Unless of course, blowing a gasket is the only way of solving the problem... :-)

    Thanks.

  • You always stay positive and don't absolutely blow a gasket when things aren't going the way you planned. Keep it up! You're too cool!

    Keep it up :-)

  • Wow, it's coming along great it seems! The snow must be really hard, but it seems you're managing to do it! Really cool!

  • Iunno who has more dedication. You taking your time in the cold to get that perfect short or Gabby (spelling?)waiting in the snow for you to get that perfect shot.

  • so inspirational!! brilliant, abso-bloody-brilliant! when gab says "cheeky monkey" so funny!

  • Is this going to be in the cinemas or like as a video on here? Love it :)

  • It's really cool what your doing. I'll be watching all your blogs.

  • Can i seriously buy that costume after you're done shooting?

  • lol! Lets wait and see if it falls apart first! :-) You may not have much of a costume to buy by the time I've finished with it! :-) But maybe you will...!

  • Geeze..Now that's what I call a real Snow Storm. The filming continues but you guys hang on tough, good luck. Great work and keep it up.

  • Thankyou!

  • We thought something had happened to you! It looks as though you're settling into it nicely! We love the blogs. Stay frosty

  • lol! Thanks James (and Lauren) - yep it was a crazy week! Did you get my email? It's a pain.. over half of everything I send to people never gets sent! :-)

  • No worries, no e-mail rec'd but my spam filter became self aware Aug 2007! We genuinely are super-mega-double enjoying the blogs and are very impressed that you're getting so much done. Let us know when the screening is and we'll be there with bells on (prob not advisable in a cinema)

  • These documentaries are really entertaining! Can't wait to see the film when it's done. Also I have a question, are you going to be composing the music for the film yourself?

    Best of luck,

    Ady

  • :-) I get asked that a lot.. that is my intention. But that's a problem for another day... :-)

  • Can i buy gabi too?

    :P

  • i really want this film to work for you!!!!!

  • Yup, you truly are one of the only things worth watching on YouTube these days...

  • seriously...

  • Thanks guys - I appreciate that - same to everyone who has said that in these comments. I'm glad you're enjoying them!

  • haha i would take part of that pool wannabef, the only thing is i'm not sure how much weight he'll be loosing if gabbi says he's always making pasta. I am curious as to how much muscle he'll have after this.....and also how much weight he'll get in post haha

  • Looks exhausting, Rob. I think we should get a pool going here on how much weight we all think you'll lose by the time you wrap principal photography... and how much you'll put on in post!

    Keep up the great work!

  • Ahh! But you haven't factored in the cheese fondue equation! :-)

  • I think thrlonefilmmaker in my opinion is the beas thing on this site..

  • keep it up man!!!!! i cant wait to see the film. your work is inspiring.

    PV

  • Wow, you both are inspiring~

  • Good work Sir, it seems to be going semi-swimmingly after your somewhat over-optimistic first shoot day! Keep it up.

  • I've only just come across these blogs today from Indy Mogul. Its very interesting and very relaxing watching you suffer on the mountains lol. It must be so hard and frustrating but at the end of the day, its very rewarding.

I'm currently making a one man film which is only 10 minutes long and its not easy. I understand how you feel.

I was wondering what camera are you using for these documentary's?

  • Thanks! Relaxing for some....!! :-) Best of luck with your 10min film, I hope it goes well!

I'm using a Sony V1 to film the blogs also.

  • Dear Swiss Eskimo's

I really loked forward for this episode and now i've seen it, i can't wait for the next one. Someone just asked about how many blogs are there going to be until the film is finished. I hope a lot, because it is a great pleassure to watch you to out there make your dream come true.

    Until the next episode.

    Johannes (Holland)

  • Thankyou very much! ...Swiss Eskimos! - I've not been called that yet - it's a good one! :-)

  • wicked video, how many blogs are there gonan be before the film?

  • I'm afraid I have no idea as I don't know how long the film will take - so long as I haven't finished making the film, the blogs will continue documenting the process!

    Best

    Rob

  • Sounds good, Im looking forward to them!!

  • Keep going Rob:)

Its hard work filmmaking but very rewarding.

    All the best

    Iain

  • Very good.

  • Hey - great videos! Whatever you encounter doing this, I hope you are building those struggles into your character as he would have to overcome them and lived with them for years and years. What doesn't kill you... makes you a better film maker! :)

  • Hahaha! You cheeky monkey!

  • Recomending your great videos and story in Germany, see ci-jou (dot) de

  • Danke. Das ist von Ihnen sehr freundlich.

    :-)

  • Great. Best of luck.

  • I admire your determination however I believe that without having a person controlling the camera for the shots, you will limit yourself too much on what you can do and the space you can use for a shot, especially for close ups scenes, zooming etc. Not only that but it will be a nightmare, playing with pure luck each time, not knowing if you are in the capture or not.

I would suggest that you call this thelonecouplefilmmaker :) and have your girlfriend help with the camera.Just a thought :P.

  • He's not relying just on luck - like a normal movie if a shot doesn't work out the first time, he does more takes until he gets it right.

A movie camera isn't everything. A great filmmaker can make a great movie with limited movement.

  • Yes, that was my initial thought when I first came up with the idea ages ago - it was in my mind when I came up with a story - and the story is such that the film actually benefits from static camera. But it's not all static - I have found ways of getting movement in.

The shots where I'm closer to camera are easy - it's just the close-up or Mid shots of me running towards camera with the camera 100M away that were troublesome - but I got them now.

    :-)

  • Rob and Gabi - just another fan wishing you well! Love what you're doing and best wishes.

  • Bravo man, can't wait to see a trailer!

  • as you get the routine down, doing individual shots is gonna go by quicker and quicker, so I have no doubt that you'll be finishing on schedule.

    good luck bro!

  • you wind her up allright.. jaja.. with your farts... thats true love man!! way to go.. keep it up!! we´ll be here waiting for more!

  • Great Stuff Robert - What an awesome, awe inspiring beginning. Incredible work you guys are doing. But Lego in the shoes ? Must be my sons. Can't wait to see the final result !

What a relationship you have - truly romantic.

Hang in there dudes - I'll be cheering you on from way down under. Stay warm.

    Happy Trails wild man.

    Bright.

  • Thank you! Honestly, I have noooo idea where the lego came from - really, really... :-p

  • does anyone know how we will be able to see this when its done? it looks like it will be great.

  • a few things you could do to keep in frame would be to put like see where you can see with the camera then put 2 poles to mark off the area thats in the shot and then just stay in that area! same with focus. just place something there to focus on and then remove it to do the shot. I know those tricks have helped me with some filming my bf and I have done!

also I love your blogs and I'm sure you're movie will be wonderful! Keep up the good work!

  • Wow...thats an excellent idea. Props to you. :D

  • To build on LeftyKnits idea if you had a small ball or stone on a string to toss out it might be a quicker way of checking the range of your shot, before marking it, since you probably need to save time and energy when you can. Love your videos!!

  • That's a good idea too aeporterarts. Thanks.

  • Very good idea! I was trying to use landmarks in the background - like between those two trees etc. but then found that as I ran towards camera I strayed. But yes... hmmmmmmm. I've finished the long running shots almost now (for the first part) so might adopt that when I come to it again for the second.. Thanks LeftyKnits.

  • A laser pointer works very well for this, once you mark out your shot, you can attatch a small cheap laser pointer to the camera and aim it at the centre of your shot. This will help you to track your movements relative to the centre of shot where ever you are, near or far (just don't look directly at the laser, but then being blinded is a good incentive to avoid camera stare!). You can retouch or garbage matte the bright red dot easily with commotion and after effects.

  • ...and my brother sells them on ebay!! Idiot that I am. Actually though, that concerns me - I don't want to touch up every shot for a feature length film - that will be too time consuming.

If this was shorter then yes - genious idea.

  • Only just stumbled upon your fascinating little filmmaking quest but am massively impressed! Good luck sir!!

  • Ah, but that's the beauty of it. Because the dot never moves in frame (...much), 90% of the time it can just be covered with a static clone stamp. But as you're in deepest darkest switzerland, I have another suggestion...

  • Mark out the farthest point you can physically go where you can stake the 2 outside boundaries and the centre of shot. Go there and at each location look back at your camera, find a point directly in line with your camera lens but far beyond, and mark that with a stake. Now you have a mirror reference and can see at a glance where you are in shot by lining up the camera with the stakes behind it.

  • P.S. actually you could avoid tramping all over your fresh snow and do this from behind the camera, using existing references (i.e. second branch on the left of that tree, mossy boulder on the right, etc...). Just line them up with the fron of the camera and place your stake.
