Don't worry,I feel the same way too.I always tel people that cartoons and anime are very different.Becuase in cartoons you pretty much only have one genre comedy and its for kids but with anime it can be drama,action,comdedy,love,scif­i,etc and it can be for any age.Also the arts for anime are usually so much better than standard cartoons.

Actually,technically anime is just a shorter term for animation so even cartoons made by disney or cartoons like Family Guy would technically be anime. However, it isn't proper in common speech to use the tecnical definitions. For example, emo is simply short for emotional in the same way anime is for animation, but if somebody was to get so emotional that they were to cry it would simply be unproper to call the emo because that's just not what the word is known for.

Actually in Japan, when a Japanese person refers to anime they could very well be talking about Family Guy because in Japan anime is any animation from anywhere.
