  • Is that Billy Murray I hear in the chorus?

  • Wow. My new favorite version of this song! I learned this song recently from a recording by Al Hopkins & His Buckle Busters, but it was one of those that I already knew deep down from some inexplicable source. One of favorite all time melodies. This will contribute greatly to my own banjo and harmonica rendition. Thank you for posting!

  • My Grandfather who died in 1934 used to whistle this on his way back to his Diary from his outside job as a carpenter. It was said to be one of his favorites. I have it one cylinder, too but your copy is much clearer. Thanks for posting!

  • TennesseeShine, Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words.

    Regards, J.

  • "Pretty Red Wing" was very prominently featured on Fibber McGee & Molly. Fibber would take out his old mandolin & play & sing "Pretty Red Wing", which is the song he serenaded Molly with when they were courting.

Actually the song "Red Wing" sounds like is the National Emblem March. I don't know which came first, but both are written in 2/4 march time. Red Wing is also one of my favorite songs of the time and I play it constantly (& pretty poorly) on the piano.

  • RRaquello, I've heard a few installments of Fibber McGee & Molly, but I hadn't known that-thanks-I should add a note in the descriptive about that. Thanks for watching.

    Regards, J.

  • this music made me remember popeye the sailor

  • Dliu84, That's sort of an odd connection, but it is strange how we all sometimes associate usually disparate things with each other. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching.

    Regards, J.

  • I'm hooked now. I can't stop replaying this song in my head; It's so good. I can't wait until i get to play this in orchestra class :D

  • PeachandCram, It is a wonderful tune-I've been hooked since the first time I heard it. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for watching.

    Regards, J.

  • this is lively and happy thanks

  • Rmorecook, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching.

    Regards, J.

  • Thank you so much for this! I have known this song all my life, as my grandmother used to sing and play it. I have the original score as shown in the beginning of the video, and am attempting to learn it. So nice to hear such a wonderful rendition- it sounds much better than many 78's one hears!

  • Fordtruxdad, Thank you for the kind words! I hope the tune brings back many fond memories. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Regards, J.

  • This is a magnificent piece of music - and it makes a great march too. Bob M

  • Bob, Glad you enjoyed it. It's one of my all favorites. Regards, J.

  • Dunnotter, I'm so glad you enjoyed it and thank you for sharing your wonderful memories of this tune. Hearing these fond remembrances from so many people is the most wonderful gift I could ever receive. Bless you too! Regards, J.

  • John, this is one of my favorite Blue Amberols! If I keep listening to it, do you think there's a chance I could grow wings?

  • Roc, sure anything is possible if you wish hard enough for it! ;-) YF, J.

  • I have this son on a 78 somewhere.

  • I had no idea 'Red Wing' was that old. I've heard many renditions of this classic including a rockabilly version made in the 50s. This recording, however, is just lovly. Love the birdsong sounds!

    Wayne

  • Wayne, it was originally written as an Intermezzo-a piano piece in 1907. It is a wonderful song! Regards, J.

  • Thank you so much for sharing all these very rare cylinder recordings.

  • So glad you like them. More to come... Regards, J.
