Possibly the most beautiful, meaningfull and delicate lyrics ever written by a USA artist/singer/writer.This one is for the ages. One hundred years from now these lyrics will be as beautiful and much appreciated by that generation as we do today.
Funny thing is, as unique as this is, it is somewhat of a common chord progression. E minor, B7, G C D...like so many songs we have all heard. But how good does it sound?
Her acoustical guitar playing is great. Do you comprehend how difficult it is to sing and play so perfectly at the same time? This was the best song she ever wrote...it was for for Bob Dylan. Guess after Gabe Harris she gave up. Never should have cut her hair, ever. She is matchless in our times, better in person than in the studio. With most artists, this cannot be said.
Sometime in the Sixties a mate gave me a joan baez vinyl am now over sixty and am amazed at what he gave me was an intro to a lifelong appreciation of superb talent
A wonderful musician, songwriter, and of course at one time Bob Dylan's lover/muse...two very strong personalities where probably not meant to stay together long. What a wonderfully beautiful song resulted from the short relationship, as in many cases pain brings joy!
I believe I have fallen in love with this song. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you Joan Baez for touching my soul through your song. You have the voice of an angel.
Our father managed the Belleview Biltmore when Bob Dylan and the Rolling Thunder Review and Joan Baez used the resort as their base camp. This performance was likely in the Ballroom.
One of my mentors. Absolutely beautiful. Women are strong, intelligent, and capable of whatever they set there mind to....while caring for those they love...
Yes, she's a brilliant songwriter, yes, she has a once-in-lifetime voice...but I don't think Baez gets nearly enough credit for her guitar playing. Those chord progressions, which are of her own design, are extremely difficult, and I have a hard time coming up with any noted musician whose guitar style is quite llke hers.
i wonder if there was ever a phone call, or whether Baez just wrote that. They were the couple at the time, supposedly the split was more about Dylan doing drugs than anything, but maybe the phone call is just a litterary device. Certainly, Baez has written one of the most memorable songs of all time, unforgiving and at the same time poetic, but Dylan has never responded. Wonder what he thought of it?
She has said in interviews that she wrote it after he called her to play a new song, but it was several years after they broke up. She was writing a song, which was originally about something else, and the song became about him. I encourage you to read her autobiography if you want to know more.

Wow!! Thank you to my guitar student Barb for asking to learn this song.
How is it I never heard it before? Too much Van HAlen in my past?
Beautiful and simple.

Nobody does it better than Joan! Clarity and purity of voice and feeling! Even today! And her hair has always been beautiful!

@mthivier She's wonderful - she does handle the progressions w/ a nice touch. She borrows a lot of nice technique from her latin roots.

Alone. On stage with no accompaniment, and she does this. Until I saw this, I assumed Pete Townshend was God. It turns out I may have been wrong.
