What a movie. I've got goosebumps listening to this right now. As cheesy as it sounds, this music takes me back to a time before much stress was in my life :)
James Horner didn't write the "heroic" theme. It's the opening theme of Schumann's "Rhenish" symphony, rebuggered from 3/4 to 4/4. Horner is a notorious plagiarist who steals classical music unrepentantly, slaps his name on it, and takes credit for it. The satellite scene in Patriot Games? Another ripoff, this time the Adagio (aka "invention") from Khatchaturian's Gayne. He performs this same ripoff in Alien. James Horner can bloody-well blow me.
Someday, I'll read the books to this. For those of you who don't know, there were two more parts to the story and 2 and 3 are available in novel form.
My 13 year old daughter finds it so sad at the end when Willow returns to the village and him and Kiya run into each others arms. She says the music is just to hard to not like. This was originally a film from when I was 14 or 15 and it's a great film from my past. Now it's one of my eldest daughters favourite films from her childhood. And I'm proud to be able to have that connection with her.
when i watched the opening on another video, this music swept in and I almost cried, it fills me with so much.. i dunno... i just LOVE this film and the way it made me feel when I was a kid. It's superbly written and directed, cast is excellent, costumes and props, locations, everything is top quality. I just had to buy it the instant I heard the music, I can't believe I've put it off for so long, I can't wait to watch it now! Now I want to get the soundtrack!!! ARGH!

Swords, Sorcery, Adventure and a psycho witch! before lord of the rings there was this! i used to get excited when i was 10 yrs old when this came on the TV! :D
Sorry to get people all worked up... I love Narnia and Willow both so much. I didn't mean to compare the two. I have a bad tendency to do that. I should just let them be separate. They both have their different styles. I'm a big fan of the Narnia books, so the movies were exciting.
I am now known among my friends as the oddball who loves Willow. No joke. I have now seen this movie seven times in the past year and a half. It never gets old.
Fantasy films made in 80's are the best. Return to Oz, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Young Sherlock Holmes, Secret of Nimh, Willow and Original StarWars trilogy are better than modern Twilight or Avatar.
I saw this movie in theaters 2 times when i was 6 years old and had the merchandise. This movie is the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings of it's time! if you liked this one, check out Thor which is a similar fantasy epic.
I can't believe people are still commenting ont his movie. it's one of the best in my opinion. Good to see people still know good movies. Love the music too. it's been in my head for days so I had to listen..
@G0DB0Y25 of course people will still comment on such a movie - films like this will live forever! This is a really classic of a movie, no one can beat that.... :o)
This is exciting and powerful. I've never seen Narnia, but I have seen The Lord of the Rings and the music from Willow is definitely better. On the other side of the coin, it's up there almost with the melody from Jurassic Park.
@bw2082 You think those 4 simple notes were stolen from Beethoven? I could have played that on the keyboard when I was 2. On the other hand, its obvious the duration of that melody and harmony is taken from Schumann's Rhenish Symphony.
@RebelAdmiral But didn't George write the story? I think he wrote a book sequel about Elora Danon when she is an older, spoiled, princess. Never got to read it, though.
@krizzolito I remember watching the scene were Razel transforms back into her human form only to realize that she had aged. I was mesmerized! I pray that I look just as beautiful as her when I become old.
Great movie and awesome score! i saw Willow when i was 6 back in 1988 in theaters and loved it, it definitely predated Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Avatar. This movie is like Princess Bride meets LOTR.
A lot of what made Willow really good was the cinematography. You could really see the colors and richness of the landscape. But in modern fantasy movies like LOTR, they dull out every scene. Everything looks pale and yellow.
2:06 - 2:58 makes me sweat like crazy. On a Friday or Saturday nightout when scum are intoxicated and out of control on booze someone should appear, beat them up with this music playing in the very air itself! Acid!
willow is the sort of film i wathed growing up, that and return to Oz, labrinth, Legend, the land before time, the dragonslayer the never ending story etc. With exeption to the land before time all the rest used actors and animatronic puppets, you just dont get that now its just CGI CGI CGI. its a real shame
@merovingianking1 Agreed, we all know that it's the music that truly makes a film. We need more 'proper' films, less CGI, more animatronics...we need it like it was.
@merovingianking1 Pleased to share yr opinion dude! :o) Why does EVERY film made nowadays HAVE to be made with merchandising in mind? Thats what spoils things for me-can you imagine classics like The Great Escape, or THEM! being made 'merchandise-able'??? It doesn't bear thinking about...
This is an EXCELLENT sound track and the movie was considered a flop at the time but it's a great film that had ground breaking special effects at that time. Lot's of comedy and a great family film. George Lucas wrote more books on this same story line but i'm sure that because this was a flop at the box office he decided not to do more movies, which is a pity.
Fantasy should have familiar themes, like small heroes and such. What don't you like about the new Narnia films? I read the books around 4th-6th grades and the LWW movie came out 8th grade. I loved it. The BBC version was good too.
i found the narnia films too 'technically' driven. the story itself is very good (though i prefer willow in terms of overall screenplay). it works so well because it was written specifically for the cinema. Narnia on the other hand requires a more subtle touch (which i found the bbc series did so well). simply i think willow suits blockbuster big screen, where narnia is more suited to a long winded tv series where more depth can be injected into the journey the kids make.
@auhin Did you ever see the television series' made by the BBC in the late 80's early 90's. They did most of the books of the Narnia series, but never repeat them - they were superb!
I love the new Narnia movies. And I love Willow. The only reason I like Narnia slightly better is because of the literary/spiritual bedrock on which the series is founded. Willow is a stellar film, dude. I'm not trying to disparage it. Willow sets up a believable fantasy world without the convenience of a prewritten book to follow. Still, there are noticeable themes of LOTR in Willow, but this is a good thing.
richg you did a good job, over half of this mix has the tune I love the most, beginning to 1:24 then starts back up at 3:30 to the end. This is powerful music, a great movie needs great music. Willow, an excellent recipe.
I just love the movie :) I remember when I was 7 and suffered from pneumonia. I was sitting at home and watching 'Willow' time after time, every day for two weeks :) A couple of years later my father gave me the original video for my Birthday. Still got it :) Willow is one of a kind in comparison to the movies that are filmed nowadays. x
please tell me you are joking! and i bet you mean the new narnia too. if you were comparing willow to the original British TV series I may understand your point. but please dont tell me you prefer that tripe that came out in the cinemas in recent years..
@richg101 I know the new Narnia was a massacre! They inocorporated creatures used in lord of the rings and never in Narnian books. It was awful everything was.
@richg101 Agreed! I remember watching the BBC series when it was first shown on tv, Sunday afternoons at 5/6pm I think! I'd read the books and, even though I knew what was coming next, I still couldn't wait for the next episode. Same with BBC version of The Borrowers-miles better than the god-awful big screen release some years ago (Ian Holm beats John Goodman hands down!). I've seen the Hollywood Narnia films...and i'd rather spend eternity as a statue than be forced to watch that tripe again.
i usualy am hard to get impresed by a soundtrack, i like ani kind of music, but only 1-3 tracks from a compositor realy impres me, now with james horner, it gets a bit diferent, i like almoast all his creation XD with his last movie, avatar, he did it damn good, i like alot all the soundtracks, unusual for me.
you dont need words, a realy good artist can speak with music to anione, like a universal language.
I wish horner had done as good job on Avatar as he did on this. I think the only lacking factor of Avatar was the soundtrack - which to me sounded a bit toned down in terms of emotion.
oh, but my friend, he did better on avatar, i think he did his best. ;) it is perfect in tune with the image, and fits perfectly the storry/action/'image'
@richg101 well Avatar sucked period, so nothing horner could have done to make it better unfortunately. Horner is the all time best, but Avatar sucked. It only got such huge ratings becuase it was 3d, a nd looked cool.. It was fresh, but aside from that, the entire storyline was shit, anyone with 1/2 a brain will admit that. On top of that, it was just a shit movie.
What a movie. I've got goosebumps listening to this right now. As cheesy as it sounds, this music takes me back to a time before much stress was in my life :)

Narnia on the other hand requires a more subtle touch (which i found the bbc series did so well). simply i think willow suits blockbuster big screen, where narnia is more suited to a long winded tv series where more depth can be injected into the journey the kids make.

Good point, you're probably right. I don't like it when they take out parts of the book to make the adventure "move length."

@auhin Did you ever see the television series' made by the BBC in the late 80's early 90's. They did most of the books of the Narnia series, but never repeat them - they were superb!

@Apophisguard
Not while they aired, but I have watched parts on YT. They are pretty sweet.

Still got it :) Willow is one of a kind in comparison to the movies that are filmed nowadays. x

@hasiak666 Sounds like they hired Bob Dylan to do that part haha

Both have Biblical themes. The beginning echoes the story of Moses and baby Jesus, both children persecuted by a wicked ruler.

Narnia is the best, but WIllow is awesome.

please tell me you are joking! and i bet you mean the new narnia too. if you were comparing willow to the original British TV series I may understand your point. but please dont tell me you prefer that tripe that came out in the cinemas in recent years..
richg101 1 year ago 5
@richg101 I know the new Narnia was a massacre! They inocorporated creatures used in lord of the rings and never in Narnian books. It was awful everything was.

@FernandoTorrera
I thought it had great acting and captured the spirit of the books well, however.

@auhin gotta disagree. willow to me is more creative and "real", which is important

I absolutely love this movie. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen and has the best soundtrack as well.
ReaperOfTheUndead 2 years ago 3
i usualy am hard to get impresed by a soundtrack, i like ani kind of music, but only 1-3 tracks from a compositor realy impres me, now with james horner, it gets a bit diferent, i like almoast all his creation XD with his last movie, avatar, he did it damn good, i like alot all the soundtracks, unusual for me.
you dont need words, a realy good artist can speak with music to anione, like a universal language.

Willow is my favourite fantasy film of all time. Funnier than LOTR, more original than Narnia. It's awesome :)

I wish horner had done as good job on Avatar as he did on this. I think the only lacking factor of Avatar was the soundtrack - which to me sounded a bit toned down in terms of emotion.
richg101 2 years ago 7
oh, but my friend, he did better on avatar, i think he did his best. ;) it is perfect in tune with the image, and fits perfectly the storry/action/'image'
stalkersas 2 years ago
@richg101 well Avatar sucked period, so nothing horner could have done to make it better unfortunately. Horner is the all time best, but Avatar sucked. It only got such huge ratings becuase it was 3d, a nd looked cool.. It was fresh, but aside from that, the entire storyline was shit, anyone with 1/2 a brain will admit that. On top of that, it was just a shit movie.
