I recall an industry pro who was a guest on a cable ( CNN ?) investor's round table who warned about a company's " robust" expansion ".He said it was a common ploy to hide the acquiring company's losses /and or bad bookkeeping etc.At least Oldham seemed to have turned the worst days of the Stones(death of Brian Jones, Altamont)into making them the longest running Rock & Roll show.
p.s you really found a fine version -when they still looked forward to each gig & actually liked being around each other -you can actually feel it.Thanks .
I think Stigwood is largely responsible for burning them up .Look at their itinerary .i read that were booked at the L A's Whiskey Au Go Go for three shows a night 45min each set.& Murray the K in NYC the same or more. The personal tensions everyone cites came to a flash point because of three factors .the writing- Jack & Brown had more finished work @ the time for booking the studio 2) money management-Ginger was keeping very strict books 3 the onstage volume battle between Eric & Jack
@TumbrelJockey they didnt like murry the k s continuos shows treadmill bill grahme threw stigwood out of the fillmore east because he tried to sit in his sisters seat
@TumbrelJockey stigwood was initialy in the movie promo business then he realized that rock groups made more money andrew oldham plugged sheet music until he managed the rolling stones and had his own record company that bee gees scheme got stigwood his own record company
@TumbrelJockey Well, we see where that got him, don't we? Three years, and forty-five years later, Cream is still one of the most popular AND respected blues bands of all time. And fuck, you can't even get rid of the goddamn Bee Gees.
Their best concert, period. If it had been captured professionally and mastered it would have been the greatest live rock LP ever made. All 3 were on fire in this period.
