Kein Wunder, daß er damit die Gemeinde "confundiret" hat... Das sollte sich heut mal einer bei der Choralbegleitung erlauben! ;-) Ach, der junge Bach - dieses Genie ist damals schon mit dem linken und dem rechten Ellbogen an die musikalischen Grenzen seiner Zeit gestoßen... Und der späte Bach? Hat das ganze 19. Jh. schon vorweggenommen: "et expecto" in der h-moll-Messe... Mahler und Reger haben nur noch abgeschrieben!

Als Schulkind lernten wir das noch singen für die Christmette, das ist jetzt 28 Jahre her, aber trotzdem heutzutage für eine normale Volksschule am Lande unvorstellbar. Schade.

What always amazes me is the fact that these pieces did not lose anything from their provocativeness. They still would be a sure way to get into trouble when using them as accompagniments in service. ;)

Each time I come across this piece, I am always impressed again. This chorale harmonization is one of the few so called "Arnstadt chorales" that has been written down and thus, that we still know.

These chorales, composed by the young Bach during his time in Arnstadt (he was 18 years old then), are choral accompagniments during church service while the assembly was singing. They are *not* chorale preludes. As accompagiments, these pieces were totally revolutionary and provocative at that tune.
