VERY ANNOYING...I haven't heard anything this ear-splitting and headache-inducing since back in the days of Industrial [Boyd Rice, Throbbing Gristle[!! Just WHAT is it that you hope to accomplish with this SHIT??!?!
LOL "some reggae dude"... I remember Geoffrey Holder best as Punjab in "Annie"... I didn't realize it, but he also did the narrating for Charlie & the chocolate factory... among other things. Wiki him! He's maaaahvelous... HA HA HA HAAAA!
I remember a 7-Up ad from the early 70s that was a spoof on the then popular Kung Fu TV show. Anybody here who can locate it and post it?
Also, in general it appears to me that 7-Up has lost tremendous market share since I was a kid then, when it seemed that it lagged in popularity only to Coke and Pepsi. I admit that I haven't had one in years.
Goeffrey Holder is the best! Geoffrey, you've given the world that unmistakable voice of yours! Christian, the world watches you dance with such fluidity. R.I.P. Boscoe... your art will always keep your memory alive. What a truly talented family!
They need to bring back the original 7-UP. Why can't they sell the original and still market that "all-natural'' crap too? It worked for Coke in the 80s with New Coke and Coke Classic.
the actors name is Geoffrey Holder-----he was in the ORIGINAL Dr Doolittle (NOT the Eddie Murphy remake) as William Shakespeare "Willie", played Punjab in the movie version of Annie, and most recently was the narrator of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp
it's amazing how much advertising has changed over the last 50 years.
This ad would never get made today - not because of anything offensive, but because it's so different from today's ads. It's long and slow paced, has just one shot / mention of the product the whole time, and doesn't use sex to sell the product.
You all forgot that Godfrey Holder also appeared in the james bond movie "Live and Let Die" starring Roger Moore. Godfrey was the voo-doo priest that remains alive (of all villans) after the final train scene.
Godfrey Holder can also be seen in Eddie Murphy's movie - Boomerang - which also starred Eartha Kitt, Robin Givens, Halle Berry, Grace Jones, Martin Lawrence and David Alan Grier...What a great movie that was!!
They changed the recipie? That explains why it doesn't taste as good to me. I tried 7-UP for the first time in years a few days ago and it tasted stale. I thought it was just old cans, but the date on them was fine. It just didn't taste as good as I remember.
I read that the original plan for this ad was to use a Sidney Greenstreet-type actor, but they completely threw that over when Geoffrey Holder auditioned.
I'd like to find some sugarless gum ads from the same time where Holder played an island tribal chief, and Jack Soo played an Eskimo - they're pretty funny.
okay, does anyone else think that there is (sexual) subtext going on there? LOL i used to watch these commercials as a child but i never, ever heard them in the way that i'm hearing them now! ("wet, wild, all that!" LOL)
that's good to know...now if we could just get them all to bring back the cool bottles all the pop used to be in...like that classic 16 oz. Pepsi bottle...SKINNY...and the green 7-Up bottle with the bubbles printed on it.
This commercial used to scare me when I was little--all because of the James Bond movie I saw him in...heheh. But at the time I had NO FREAKIN' IDEA there was so much INNUENDO in this commercial. It's like he's telling people to just go down on him...
No, Billy Crystal based the "Fernando" character on the actor Fernando Lamas. He go the idea when heard Mr. Lamas remark that he'd rather "look good than feel good".
The multi-talented Mr. Holder was the director, choreographer and costume designer for the 1978 Broadway musical "Timbuktu," a revival of "Kismet" transplanted to the West African empire of Mali in the fourteenth century. When presented with a Tony Award, Holder quipped, "Just try getting THAT out of a cola nut!"
