@threeby8887 Toronto, Canada,it is illegal, to hurt or kill a city raccoon, they are protected by the city gov. A guy a month ago hacked to death with a garden tool 4 baby raccoons and hurt the mother, somebody caught him do it called 911 and the guy got arrested and charged for animal cruelty and fined, you can also get jail time depending on the case. It was in the papers and news. I know people still do it, with poison, by hand etc, but if caught you get in big trouble.
@ducrozet74 Thank you, I'll stay in California. At least it is still legal to shoot or drown the things if they get onto your property.
That said, I'd much rather trap it and drive into the hills or mountains, far from any human habitations, and let it go. But here we can only relocate them no more than two miles from where we caught them (if we choose that option). And since state law says we must either relocate or kill them, I'll just shoot them in the head. Quick humane death.
@ducrozet74 By the way, I myself am very much a liberal, and it is good to have some protection of animals, but PETA and their animal-rights-are-more-important-than-human-rights buddies have got to go. Send them to their own island where they can let all of the local wildlife run wild on them.
@threeby8887 well i also live in a bad neighborhood, sometimes bums go through my garbage for bottles, or sit on my porch all fucked on drugs. should i shoot them in the head??maybe hack them to death with a shovel?? i mean they mess up my fucking garbage, and once i found a big human shit outside my door. personally i rather have raccoons than crackheads fucking up my garbage. but that's me.
@threeby8887 i just have a HUGE problem with somebody hacking with a garden tool at 4 baby raccoons,l not even killing them, just basically torturing them. When the cops came 2 were still alive with hacked off arms and bits and the mother was hurt and ran of with a hurt baby that is in severe pain and will die a slow death. I am NOT Ok with that. I dont like anyone killing anythin alive, but IF you are gonna do it make it a really fast humane death, with zero pain. And dont terrorize animals.
@ducrozet74 I agree with you about how heinous it is to torture animals. I have NO PROBLEM with killing raccoons that get onto my property (thankfully that hasn't happened so far), but I would shoot them in the head. That way they don't have to suffer and I'm still rid of them.
@threeby8887 I should have said that I actually prefer to trap and relocate wild animals that get onto my property--a long way away. But where I live, relocation of a trapped wild animal more than 100 yards from where it was caught is illegal, so legally I would have to shoot it.
A few years back I came across 2 raccoons in a garbage bin. I picked up a cardboard box at another bin nearby and put it into the bin with the raccoons. Then I backed off and watched. A minute later up came 2 front paws, then the 1st raccoon popped his head up, looked around, climbed up. Then came the 2nd raccoon, the 1st watching me all the while. They climbed along the bin to a railing and from there to a nearby tree. To this day I feel honoured I got to see & help those raccoons!
@HattieLovesCattie DON'T EVER DO THAT! Or at least don't ever let me catch you doing that in my neighborhood.
If you see a raccoon in a trash can or dumpster, CALL ANIMAL CONTROL and let them get it out and put it in a cage so it does not get into anyone's home or property. Or just leave the thing in there. Raccoons may look cute but they are destructive, disease-carrying (rabies and roundworm) pests that also attack pets and sometimes even people.
@threeby8887 I would call Animal Control but supposed the animal is not rabid and just got stuck in the dumpster? Many Animal Controls in towns are hurting money wise and don't always rescue animals, esp.wild ones.
@HattieLovesCattie Well, I'd just have to take that chance. But I would not allow that animal to roam free in a residential or commercial area and possibly take up residence in my or someone else's yard or house. You don't do your neighbors like that.
@threeby8887 I think the two foxes and now the raccoon that has been spotted are from the wild around here but since this part of the southeast is in a bad drought this summer plus the heat, the poor rabid animals are looking for food and water. The area where the rabid foxes were seen has a nice pond in a wooded area that has trails in a residential neighborhood.Hubby and I like to take those trails in the winter time.
@HattieLovesCattie Yeah, well the poor rabid animals still need to be kept out of our neighborhoods, twns, and cities. They don't need to spread their problems to us.
well i dont know if ur a guy or a gal, but i mean by heart no sex involved, I LOVE YOU! keep saving those lil furry angels, they arent suppose to live by our means... they are natural and free, we cage and make "traps" they cant see..
Ive had coons to get in garbage dumpsters like that, and i take my .22 and popem in the dumpster

Best way for them to get out of a trash can or dumpster is to put a tree limb or a towel ( secure it ) and let them climb out.

@HattieLovesCattie Also, a raccoon does not have to be rabid to attack a person or pet.
And roundworm is a far more prevalent problem with raccoons than rabies. Look up roundworm on Google.

@threeby8887 2 rabid foxes bit a lady and her dog recently in my area.A C is still looking for them.
HattieLovesCattie 6 months ago
@HattieLovesCattie I hope they find them.
That's why I wouldn't release wild animals into residential or commercial area. Even stray dogs and cats one must be careful with.
