why do wolves coexist with dogs? But that's actually not the point. We didn't evolve from monkeys. Humans are ape-like and have a COMMON ancestor with monkeys, chimps, apes, orangutans, and bonobos(<-the closest to us). It remains to be seen what other species will evolve into. And although we know DNA is close b/w humans, chimps and bonobos(95-98%), we're still trying to figure out what differences remain in those gaps. Also nature is non-linear; one small change could be large in consequence
Why would a monkey evolve into humans? They would have to experience the exact identical conditions as our ancestors for 100,000 years. This is impossible. The world is always changing. Unless it's in perfectly controlled conditions, you cannot expect to predict random mutation and its manifestation through natural selection.
Burn your bible. I promise, it's useless as a science book.
The Bible certainly isn't a science book. But neither are "Webster's Dictiionary" or "Harry Potter". That's no reason to throw ANY of them away. I'd like to note that sexual attractiveness can alter a species sometimes with out it splitting. We see different kinds of males with in some insect species if I recall, which signify the beginning of a beginning species break off. Other creatures, like the ceratopsians of the cretaceous changed species rapidly with I believe no way to alienate a daughter colony of the parent species. I could be totally wrong but its a theory I hold and I know some others hold it.
If you see a flaw please be kind enough to point it out so I dont go around spouting more Dumb-Assery. Otherwise I'd just thought I'd point out another way for two species to actually be living side by side in the same valley perhaps but one is the ancestor of another.
"what is the name of that song im gona get it on my ipod"
Hi! I got the song from a YouTube video. If you do a search for " kent hovind fucktard" you will probably see a dozen or more videos with the song in it.
One of Darwin's major contributions was to show that "species" is a very loose concept. There is no essence or simple archetype that makes a species, it really is our way of categorizing things.
I think the writer over-estimated how important every single detail of evolution. This would be like say, it being previous common knowledge that the night of Broken glass happened on November 9th 1938 but it turns out it actually happene on the 10th. You'd be like, "OK, whatever" and it would not lend any validity to the "Holocaust never happened" theory.
no, it's the article writer's understanding of evolution that was proven wrong. This discovery adds to our knowledge of evolution, it doesn't disprove it. It's like finding out more details about the Holocaust. Just because you add to previous knowledge it doesn't shatter everything. Ef every new discovery "Shattered" Science, progress would NEVER happen. You'd have to re-build the entire medicine industry every time a new cure was discovered.
"no, it's the article writer's understanding of evolution that was proven wrong."
EXACTLY. Evolution is not falsifiable: evolutionary theory is. The article's author did not understand evolutionary theory, even though accepting evoilution.
I think I see the point you're making. "Falling" is not falsifiable. The theory of gravity is. But if falsified the theory of gravity would have to be replaced with a better theory that explained falling even better than the old one--like Newtonian physics being replaced by relativistic physics. So too a new theory of biological descent would have to explain evolution even better than the old one.
Its amazing how prevalent the simple minded notion the "If man evolved from ape, why are their still apes" is among the IDiots. Actaully the co existence of closely relate species seems to be the norm in evolution. For a short while, homo Sapeins, neanderthals, and erecus all co existed on earth (also h. florensis if it proves to be a seperate speices).
I think the author of that article had "coelacanthitis", the inability to understand how separate species can diverge from each other without one going extinct...
I think that the mistake is likely due to the writers lack of knowledge and them looking for a snappier story than any creationist bias from the paper.
Great stuff. Creationists have been flaunting this find like it actually helps their case. At best this is used as a slightly more elaborate "if we came from monkeys why are there still monkeys?" arguement. At worst it's used so creationists can say "See! Science is wrong AGAIN!".
Great video there. I've made an educational video on speciation incase anyone wants to learn more. It's called "Evidence for Evolution: 5 - speciation".
A lot of reporters totally screwed up this story. I blame it partially on widespread scientific illiteracy, but also on the news media's craving for revolutionary news. Unfortunately the scientific method isn't exciting enough for most people, they need to invent revolutionary discoveries to spice up their content.
The depressing thing is I find the real unadulterated science intensely exciting. I'm so sick of seeing things watered down and altered to the point of incoherence.
My understanding was that the criterion that defined a "species" was reproductive compatibility (I don't know what they do in the case of species that reproduce asexually). Under that definition, the different races of humans are pretty obviously still part of the same species. :-)
"My understanding was that the criterion that defined a "species" was reproductive compatibility ...."

They mistakenly think that the truth about observed phenomena detracts from tgheir gods and goddesses. It used to be that faith was enough. Creationists don't have faith -- they want to pretend they have sceince because they NEED science. Yet science undoes them -- so we wind up with crime families like Hovind's.
"Evolutionary theory really is not that hard to understand, I just don't get how so many people can't get it."
I see 3 reasons they "can't" get it. One it's a really scary thing for most people who grew up being brainwashed by religion to accept because it refutes their upbringing. Two, their only resource iw what they hear on TV because most are too lazy to look anything up. Three (and this is the most common reason) they are just plain stupid and/or ignorant.
"...I just don't get how so many people can't get it."
Perhaps the modern news-as-entertainment media is partly to blame; parents not knowing any better means they cannot teach their children, nor follow through on their children's education. I dunnot.

The intentional mis-education of science by religion relflects the ultimate arrogance.
Science, by deifinition, does not make claims about the supernatural world.
Not only does religion, but they also hold their scriptures as authority regarding the physical world.
"The Bible" does not belong on the shelf with any science book.
All of the common refutations of evolution that you hear are based on supernatural claims and religious misinformation.
These misdeeds deserve NO respect.
