  • I agree with you on needing more various comic topics. My only little nit pick is that you started this addressing Marvel. I wouldn't expect Marvel to publish Initial D or Battle Royal.

The reason I tend to read more comics than Manga is that story arks are normally four issues rather then the 24 they are in Manga, I hate not being able to find the next book in the series.

  • Oh, then I'm sure you just LOVE the 30-plus Dark Reign books Marvel is pushing on you to buy so you can get the WHOLE story., right?

    ;-)

    Elliott

  • Half agree. I can get the Fantastic Four Dark Reign books to go along with my monthly FF fix and get a little extra flavour, I just think that DR is propostrous and wouldn't read it anyway, except of course for the FF ones, they're great. Everything with the FF in is great.

Point is I don't need all 30plus volumes to follow the story, Why should I care what happens to the Avengers or Spiderman or anyone else?

  • Enjoyed the show. But is all the cussing necessary?

  • Not really but that's just how I talk in everyday conversation. Mind you, I don't talk that way while I'm at work. Sorry. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Unfortiunately, in the USA we feel that comic are juvenile and adults who read them are juvenile or geeks who shouldn't be taken seriously. I worked in a library and know for a fact that females whether girls or adult women read books as their primary medium and feel that medium is vastly superior to comics that are for men of less than average intelligence in their opinion. I don't think the average lady would hold a fanboy in high esteem. Their lifestyle isn't cerebral enough for them.

  • heh salary man manga...

  • for reference magneto testament and sub-mariner into the depths werent typical "super hero" books that were recently put out

  • I was going to joke that I bet they don't have manga for blind people in Japan, but doing a Google search I found news stories about volunteers who transcribe manga for the blind. So there ya go.

  • Y'know, I agree with your point that American comics need to evolve and diversify and that superhero comics are just a niche and that there are many more genres and demographics worth exploring... but at the same time, most of what you guys talk about and review on here has to do with superhero comics (read: Marvel and DC).

Definitely NOT trying to sound like an asshole or attack you, but doesn't that make you guys part of the problem, going by your own argument?

  • Not taking it as an attack at all. In fact, you make a pretty good point. While Jose and I do like to discuss stuff other than superhero books, I realize that the superhero stuff gets the most attention. We need to make more of a conscious effort to look at stuff outside the mainstream and get some of the focus put on the other genres in comics.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • I'd like to think that the majority of "superhero" comics we give positive reviews to are the ones that the industry needs more of and the ones that we say we hate are books that are holding the industry back. Would you disagree with that Nkerlaan?

    J.

  • No, I wouldn't. In general, you support the books I think are worth supporting and are looking forward instead of looking back.

That said, in the context of you guys are saying in this video about superheroes just being a niche and that there's a whole other spectrum of genres out there... other than The Sword and Buffy (which are basically superhero books), I can't recall a non-superhero book that you've reviewed on here, and most of the issues you discuss center around Marvel/DC.

  • Not saying that's *bad* by any means, but I just don't know that it's necesarily fair to criticize the industry and American comic book readers for focusing so much on a single niche genre, while you yourself are focused almost exclusively on that niche.

I surmise from stuff you guys have said and commented on here that you are fans of and read all kinds of books, both indie & mainstream, and it just might be nice to see you guys step outside the Big Two (or Three, incl. Image) now and then.

  • Now that I've said all that, I'm *sure* you'll point out other videos where you've discussed non-superhero books and non-Marvel/DC topics, but I hope you'll agree it's fair to say that that's the *majority* of what you discuss on here.

  • The guys can only review whats in the stores and what people request.

I'd love to see the guys review Phonogram and Acme Novelty Library but that video would probably get like 50 views just like the Jersey Gods video got.

  • For the record locus I really dig Acme Novelty Library. Rusty Brown is one of the BEST characters ever. I have also been reading the newest Phonogram series and like it. I got into that guys work by reading Suburban Glamour. Maybe I will do a reviews of those at some point.

I think I'm going to try to do at least one review that's "outside of the box". Like you said, it may not get a lot of hits but I think it would be cool to try. We have a re review of Unwritten coming.

    J.

  • I didn't mean to imply you didn't read that type of stuff, just that it isn't reviewed generally.

Unwritten is a book I'm looking forward to reading. Madame Xanadu is a quality book every month as well.

  • He he. Actually I should have worded my comment better. I did not mean to imply that you implied anything. My bad. I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy those books.

I have been meaning to check out Madame Xanadu.

    J.

  • Looking forward to seeing your guys' take on Unwritten. I'm not quite sure how I felt about it... I think I liked it, but didn't love it. I am interested in seeing where it goes from there, though.

  • I don't like manga but I have noticed that so many girls read them. I'm not sure, but I'd have to say that along with the whole sexism in comic books the fact that they were once treated like a collectible hurts. The reason why manga sells is because it's being written like a real book, but with illustrations. Rather than creating awesome illustrations that people would want to buy and putting words to them like American comic books. Marvel, DC, or a new company needs a line devoted to females.

  • i'm surprised you guys didn't take offense to the power girl cover. I was pretty taken aback by the in-your-face blatant sexuality they were using to push that book.

  • Yeah, I was thinking of that when I watched this video. The Power Girl #1 cover may not be *quite* as fanboy-pandering as the Marvel Divas one, but it was enough so that it stopped me from buying it - I assumed that with a cover like that, it must be complete shit (also I don't read Jonah Hex so I had no idea if the writing would be any good or not).

Even knowing now that it's a well-written book, I still don't know if I'll buy it, because covers like that just make me feel kinda sleazy.

  • That's a good point pobra. The reason I didn't make a stink about it was because it was by Adam Hughes and I kind of know what I'm going to get with one of his covers. At least you had the choice of either buying his cover or the one by Amanda Conner.

    J.

  • i just think this book is just filler so they can make money and they messed up big time!

  • I'll agree with that MarvelBoy.

    J.

  • I totally agree with you guys.

be a fan of somebody doens't necesarely say that you like all his stuff he brings out.

example : I really like geoff johns but i don't really like his latest work on green lantern. But when I tell that to my friends they immediattly say that I also hate Geoff Johns. Sometimes that could be so annoing. and disturbing cause at a moment you don't give your opinion anymore just because your affraid that people are going to call you names.

    tom , the netherlands.

  • The Marvel Illustrated line is pretty good quality. The Wizard of Oz book is one of the best things every month

  • wizard of oz is great the art is so much fun i just gave it to a couple of nieces still waiting on a review

go to a big book store and the manga section and see all the hs and jr hs girls sitting around in barnes and nobles reading manga
