Football is a plain dangerous sport. I don't know why people always act shocked when these things happen. Yes, it's tragic. Would I wish it on anyone? No. But look how the fans in the stadium reacted. This incident appears to have incited a mini-mass hysteria. This is football, people! It's an injury-prone sport.
@DorvellTStewart What is an inhaler going to do about cardiac arrest? Even if the kid had asthma, severe bronchoconstriction wouldn't come on that fast (the time that he was under the pile) nor was it long enough that it would have stopped his heart. It is unfortunate but hypoxia isn't what often causes young hearts to stop, it is either undiagnosed cardiac malformation or electrolyte imbalance.
I have Asthma and I fight forest fires. Asthma isn't going to stand in the way of my life and who are you to say what someone with asthma is or isn't allowed to do?
@sirkiller07 I have my own nebulizer at home, I'm on the highest dosage of Advair that there is and I've been diagnosed a severe asthmatic. Asthma DOES NOT rule my life and I will not allow it to! Everyone with asthma has that choice. My choice is enjoying life, what's yours?
@OneSkiWonder I think you're very right. I'm a sprinter with sports asthma and even with my inhaler I breathe harder than anyone on my track team or gym class. I want to do so well in track. I will not quit and not even this problem will stop me from trying my best.
If everybody thought like that then people that have asthma, like me, would have very miserable lives. If they can handle football, let them. I played basketball and soccer with asthma. I can do just about anything I want. They have such good therapies these days that asthmatics have less limitations than ever before.
When a 17-yr. old goes into cardiac arrest, it's most likely due to more than just stress. The person has to already be prone to cardiac or pulmonary issues to have a heart attack when he's that young.
Asthma is a pulmonary issue, but the lungs are directly connected to the right side of the heart. If you have a severe enough asthma attack, it's possible to go into cardiac arrest.
I worked in cardiac care and was an EMT-D (D for defibrillator) for a long time before I became a Paramedic.
Just out of a matter of interest, does anyone know how many shows this story was featured on? I've seen it on Rescue 911 (obviously,) Real TV, and a show that only lasted a few weeks called "I'm Still Alive!" I'm sure it was on others, though.
You're not being insensative. I'd say it's more of a frightening thing if some goes down from a heart-attack as opposed to getting tackled. It depends, though.

Asthma or not, a hard blow to the cheast can stop any heart - even the strongest hearts. You learn that when taking first aid classes.

I think this segment should've included a WWC when it orriginally aired, and 5:41 would've been the perfect place to throw it in!

@DorvellTStewart Sometimes those little things called inhalers don;t work or are lower than people realize and need a refill
