Brilliant video! I love how the Prodigy song is synched up with the action once the beat kicks in. It made me sad that, as Robbie said--rightly, I think--that this year's Tour wasn't geared more toward sprints, but here's hoping Lotto support him some more next year instead of Cadel. He may not need a train, but I think for morale's sake alone, it'd help. I'm hoping Mark Cavendish can one day entertain us w/ sprints like Robbie has for so long!
As an overall cyclist Big Tom surely has to be better than McEwen in that he has the ability to win races such as Paris Roubaix, Flanders and even gets on the podium in hilly enough races like Milan San Remo. However as a pure sprinter McEwen(especially in his top form 2 or 3 years ago) is a better sprinter. His acceleration is far greater than Boonen or others but then again you don't see him do much other than stage wins. Also Boonen is 8 years younger than McEwen so he has a big future ahead!
I know everyone has their favorites (Boonen) happens to be mine but I respect BOTH riders. I'm not going to insult one over the other, they are both AMAZING athletes and could out sprint anybody on here!
I'm tired of people saying boonen is better than Robbie. Robbie is a warrior and is clearly the most dominant sprinter in the sport. All you need to see is stage 1 of last years tour to know what kind of a rider he is.
For me boonen is over rated. Of course being the team leader in your team and everybody busting their ass off - your gonna have wins but I would like to see him riding solo.
Boonen can do it without his quickstep train and you accually can't compare Boonen and McEwen. McEwen is a real sprinter, Boonen isn't he's good in sprinting but he isn't a real sprinter, he wins the tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, races where you never will see McEwen. Boonen can do more as McEwen, but if you only compare their sprints maybe McEwen is a bit better but not a lot!!!
He can come back from anything. Even when he has no train because they are dedicated to Cadel Evans. On the other hand Quick-Step and Credit Agricole are dedicated to there sprinters and make trains.
Surely there are no pocket rocket haters!!The guy's a legend! He doesnt need a train of 5 riders like the likes of petta or boonen.Stage 1 of the tour 07 proved what a legend he really is!
At that level you BETTER believe you're the best. Some might call that "a*shole" I call that the champion gene. Besides, if you think McEwen is an a*shole, go get YOUR bike; go out there and beat him. That's the easiest way to shut him up. If you think you got the stones....
You've gotta give it up to the sprinters. It takes a special breed of mental toughness and fearlessness to mix it up in a massive sea of chaotic elbows at 40 - 50 miles an hour on a machine that weighs 15 pounds. Even Lance said that these sprints at the end of flat stages scared the hell out of him.
We're discussing sprinting, not climbing abilities. As per lead-outs, that's team tactics: just as Discovery worked hard for Armstrong to finish in yellow, Milram (and F. Bortolo) works hard for Petacchi's stage wins (BTW did not McEwen once benefit from Steegmans' lead-outs?). Also, Petacchi doesn't bully or cut across other riders (see video), then doesn't say he "can't be beat". Lastly, a lead-out makes for a safe sprint. McEwen is awesome, but not "the best ever". Sean Kelly? Cipollini?
Who said best ever? Yeah you can't win green jerseys if you can't go up hills. So climbing is relevant to the discussion. And how often does Robbie get lead outs? Best ever? who knows. Better than Petacchi? No doubt!
Geiles Video, Robbie hat echt Dynamit in seinen Beinen. Wie der Typ kurz vor Ziellinie explodiert aii caramba. Erik Zabel, Mario Cippolini, Robbie McEwen...70Km/h auf grader Strecke...no problem.
is there anyone who has a clip of Robbie doing a wheelie upon finishing alp TT a few years back? I think the old boys club of the tour had all footage on earth whipped out!
Petacchi and Boonen are great sprinters but I'd take Robbie any day. Doesn't need a lead out train because he's crafty enough to win on his own and his bike handling skills are amazing. Nothing better than seeing him come rocketing out of nowhere in the final 200m to take a win.
Spoke to Robbie this week, book signing, what a genuinely awesome guy.
