  • I thought the hymn was asking the question as to whether or not Christ walked in England at some point between his resurrection and eventual ascension to heaven? As for "ingcarl69's" intimation that this beautiful hymn is only for the "rich", (whoever they might be) - rubbish! We regularly sang it during morning assembly at my Secondary Modern, (Comprehensive) school in the late '70's.

If you believe this is a national call to fight against nasty "Mr. Johnny Foreigner" you're missing the point

  • Lets stop calling this land the united kingdom and all it GREAT Britain again just like it used to be and become proud again

  • @kpsaint - With all due respect, do you understand what this lyric means? It's not a call to nationalism but, rather, something quite the opposite: it's a pean to social justice, freedom and solidarity.

  • I think the gist of it is; This once beautiful land has become a polluted den of iniquity and exploitation, but we shall fight with all our might and resources to transform it into a paradise of moral goodness, freedom and justice.

  • This is a song for All English, not just the rich When the private schools sing it that makes me feel sick.Do you think blake would have been there? Gut the bastards and take our country back--lets start with posh and toff.

  • so who knows what it really is about????

  • As a Scot, I just love this song and it should be the England's Anthem

  • everyone had it at their wedding :0)

    Myself included

  • Nice Billy,

saw you in Berlin a couple of times,

    Tastic.

  • Having studied Blake I get the impression Billy Bragg understands the true meaning of this song! Well done Billy, I love the way you sing it.

  • you're damn right! it makes me sick to see people like the BNP co-opt it.

  • This should be England's anthem, not the god save the queen nonsense

  • From the union anthem to the women's institute. It's simply an anthem of hope and belief in the possibility of change created by the people for the benefit of the people.

I had it at my wedding :)

  • Thanks for posting this...

    Peace :~)
