This is the german "Fallbeil" (Drop Axe) or "Fallschwertmaschine" (Drop Sword Machine), the type is the Bavarian Model of 1854. In Germany, especially during the Third Reich, is was not usual to use the word "Guillotine". This model has a drop height of only 1,5 Meters, the french models of 1792 and 1870 had drop heights from 3,7 to 4,5 Meters. The german model 1854 was completely made of steel, the french models of oak, only the blade, the rails for the blade and some parts were made of steel
@DocsOnline@pentogram23 In fact it's a very small example of this machine, but it was constructed to be used inside cellar rooms. It works as effectively as a high Guillotine because the knife 's got a weight of 80 kg. A second one of this sort you can see at Vienna Criminal Museum. I'd be happy to wellcome you there.
@pentogram23 I would think if the blade is heavy enough (they were usually weighted at the top) and sharp enough, and the inside grooves of the frame well oiled, then that blade would come down with some pretty intense force for even 3 feet. The way the blade is machined at the angle helps greatly too. I had read somewhere that the weight of the blade was around 70-80 pounds. That's a lot of energy falling from even 3 feet.

@pentogram23 The German Fallbeil features a heavier and thicker blade than its French counterpart does; besides, what can be considered the 'canvas' of the blade, called 'mouton' in French, is entirely made of steel and it is much more massive. Thus, a shorter drop should be enough to sever the neck 'swift and quick'. Finally, even if the neck were not cut through, the spinal cord and the main blood vessels would be severed anyway, causing the offender's instant death, which is what matters.
@pentogram23 The reason for this is because it is a German Fallbiel, which is a much newer machine than the French style of Guillotine, this machine would have been used around 1944. The old style French machines were 4 metres tall. The way that the drop is reduced is by greatly increasing the weight of the Muton (this is the wooden block that the blade is connected to).
@pentogram23 Yes, but remember, the blade is weighted by the mouton, and the blade is very heavy so it would probably cut through a neck with ease, even from such a short height.
@pentogram23 The reason is simple: you've got to get a certain amount of kinetic energy, enought to cut the neck of the victim (a very gruesome end...).
The formula is.
K=W·H (K=kinetik energy, W: weight of the falling blade; H: height).
So, the same quantity of energy of a 65 lbs blade falling from a height of 10 feet can be met by a 130 lbs blade falling from a height of 5. Hello!
The guillotine is not a death machine but a grooming tool. It depends in whose hands it is placed.
Let me explain.
I am a barber. I used this wonderful machine in my shop for over 20 years. If a customer asked for a short back and sides I put down my scissors and unveiled my guillotine. But only after locking the shop.
Obviously.
I never had a customer who complained about his short back and sides.
And I never used the guillotine if there was more than one customer in the shop.
If you have any questions regarding this wonderful invention, dont hesitate to ask. But do hurry as my free time is of utmost importance. My address is Death Row.
And please dont be upset if you fail to receive a reply. I might be half way through writing to you when they come to drag me from my cell and frog march me to Old Sparky.
Do I have any regrets?
Only one Im sad to say. There is no guillotine in this godforsaken place.

van der Lubbe was framed...what a fuckin gutless disgrace it was using a mentally challenged man to pin for a nazi crime perpetrated for political gain..
@Adamalgorithm yeah, I know what you mean, the curiosity of it makes you feel like you have issues or something, lol it's something that really bothers me, but is also intriguing to me.. IE: How long a person is alive afterwards, it must be horrible, tho you may not actually feel anything since you would go into the deepest level of shock, and your brain turns off your pain receptors (survival mechanism to allow you to live through pain) tho in this case there would be no "living" afterwards
That is the actual Guillotine used on Van Der Lubbe, (who was framed for burning the Reichstag) it is of different construction to the French variety because it was installed in a room with a relatively low ceiling.

The German machine's blade is extremely heavy. That makes the difference. Same potential energy despite lower starting point.
KaitainCPS 10 months ago
@pentogram23 either way it would still be effective? may not offer complete decapitation but anything that severs the spinal cord is instant death
