I mean, don't get me wrong, I loved the plot twist of Soma actually being Dracula (if anybody says spoilers to a friggin 8 year old game, shame on you for taking to long to even find it) and I agree it was a pretty huge part of the game, but fighting a Belmont was still pretty huge for the series back in 1997.

Because generations down the line of belmonts, the whip STILL held richter's memory as the strongest. Thus, you had to fight his apparition. But, thats just interpretation.
