As for Lance, I call him the flying master, not the dragon master. In G/S/C/HG/SS he uses three dragons but all six are part flying. Even in these games he has more flying types than anything else.

I think the reason why Gyarados was fa water-flying type was because a water-dragon would be overpowered too strong its only weakness would be dragon and back then the only dragon type move was Dragon Rage and I think its power was like 40 or 60 really weak than nowindays plus I think the only flying type move Gyarados could learn would be bounce

gyrados was SUPPOSED to be part dragon but the first gen only had 1 dragon type and it was near impossible to get but its really easy to get gyrados. gyrados would be unbeatable so they made it flying to help out the players and make it harder.

@KruelAidMan Ahh, the first comment battle on my channel. Let me add that nriable's probably right. Another point: Gyarados doesn't learn Fly or anything else that's flying. It's like how Ask Ketchum destroyed Sabrina and her Kadabra/Alakazam with a ghost-type while in the game ghost(/poison)-types are terrible against her. Gyarados is still flying because it would be to cheap for it to be dragon and it wrecks with Aqua Tail anyways.

@Xdude490 TV show never makes mistakes like Ground types getting electrocuted...and Ghost was meant to be super-effective against Psychics in G1 but a bug meant that they were flagged as no-effect instead. Check the type chart or NPCs in Saffron Gym if you NEED proof.

Butterfree can't learn Fly either, I guess it wasn't SUPPOSED to be part-Flying too!

NATURAL moves are what matter) only learns 1 psychic move though, in addition to it making sense. moves like that define its being not type so much. gyrados's moves reveal a dragon-type structure, not flying. notice it has no flying type attributes.
