  • “True beauty is something that attacks, overpowers, robs, and finally destroys.” -Yukio Mishima

  • Abel Korzeniowski's stole this song and title it "Fight". Like this if you feel like this P.G classic and "Fight" are way too similar.

  • @AlchemicTraveler Can you give me the link to the song so I can give you my thoughts?

  • For some reason I can't post links, but Look up "WE soundtrack" song name "Fight" it sounds very much like this song and much more like "Mishima" video with the empty theater.

  • @AlchemicTraveler Found it at /watch?v=deqGUcnRe-g&feature=related .... I would say they're VERY similar. However I agree with you that PG's is way better.

  • Anybody else come here because of the Dwayne Wade commercial?

  • @UnwantedUsername

nooo im here cause this is an excellent note in cinema history

  • "Jiro dreams of sushi" Song... best song i´ve ever heard... funeral or birth song! Viva Mishima!! Viva Nippon!

  • When this video loaded, there is only a Like button for me. No Dislike button. The way it should be.

  • Finally! I've been searching for half hour thru Philip Glass's stuff. This is the song that's on the "This is Flight" commercial for the new Fly Wade 2 by Jordan. I can't be the only person wondering.

  • @1valicev yep that's it. ashamed as i am, the first time i heard this music was on that commercial and i fell in love with it. it's so beautiful.

  • my reaction is that you should shut up. daniel brou it.

  • daniel brou

  • of most songs, i get tired off after a while when i listend to them alot. but this song, this song keeps clearing my mind and let me drift away and just relax :) i just love it! it is one of my all time favorite pieces

  • You know what the worst thing about this piece is? It ends.

  • I've been resolute on this for years. If I had a choice on my death I'd wish to pass away with this in my ears.

  • @TheThreeWeavers Agreed. This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.

  • My friend sent me this link and said "Checkout this great dub!" So I say here for 3:00 waiting for a bass drop. I never found one, but yet I found an epic song.

  • RE: Sybok1988 - Western Political Terms, such as "fascism" are general in their scope. And I agree that the use of the term "fascist" is incorrect in describing Mishima's ideals. It's much more fascinating and complex; how an individual can manifest such talent and at the same time be so mistaken in his path. Both glorious and curious. Worthy of study, neh?

  • 七生報国, slogan written in his head band, means "if I live seven times, I serve the country seven times"

  • If you mean Mishima was a fascist to his art, I might agree. Can you call all fascists followers of Hitler or Mussolini? I think not. Fascism has many facets, some of which are worthy of examination. In the same light, Mishima was a "royalist" or a firm believer in the royal family being ascendant, to the detriment of all else. In that same light he may be called a "chauvinist." He refused to compromise his beliefs. His inflexibility led to his demise, but did not detract from his art.

  • Mishima, one of the great 20th century fascists! Do you even understand what you are celebrating?

  • @HoboVodka - You never read even one of his books, that's for sure ! It's not so difficult to call anyone a fascist. When you compare Mishima to Hitler, you might come to the conclusion that Mishima was as much a fascist as a duck crossing the street. He was an artist, a poet, who wrote beautiful books. One of Japan'sGreatest writers ever.

  • @HoboVodka I am fully aware of Mishima's political leanings. He was a fascinating person with an interesting personality. Honestly there's not enough on him today for as good an author he was.

  • one of the 10 best films of the 80's

  • I've been listening to Glass' works for a good part of the morning; his strings are absolutely sublime to listen to.

  • I dont know how i got here but.....wow.

  • @phat989 I'm glad you did

  • @phat989 I'm glad you did

  • The theme from The Man That Wasn't There sounds a lot like this one.

I got kinda confused with these, but maybe thats just me.

  • Beautiful!

  • At the same time, I also see My Lady Titanic, setting off into her last sunset.

If Mishima Sensei ever needed a navy to join his army, she would lead it.

  • Sublime and breathtaking score. There are so many great Philip Glass compositions, but his contribution to Paul Schrader's film "Mishima" will always be my favorite. Every note and every passage sounds perfect to my ears. I absolutely love the way he constructs his pieces. It's so distinctive and wonderful.

  • 9 people are Justin Bieber fans.

  • @BarkingUnderdog

    obviously

  • I would recommend listening to the third Schönberg quartet and Mishima successively because I see them as a nice representation of our duality as humans.

Schönberg expresses our irrational part, our inner fears and the overwhelming pressure of ourselves as members of a higher structure.

Glass expresses our inner beauty, the never ending creativity and sincerity represented by soft, bright and seemingly never ending arpeggios.

Both pieces are incredibly beautiful in their personal sphere.

  • I want to listen to this as i die

  • @akkiunderling it is in my last will and testament that when i die, i want a funeral by the beach and i want my ashes thrown into the ocean as this song is playing.

  • @MrJordanburrows

Skin color, now in different fragrances. -_-

  • @MrJordanburrows GET THE FUCK OUT

  • this is by far the most beautifull piece of music ive ever heard in my entire life. the movie was ok but the soundtrack is just perfect. whenever im stressed or mad i listen to this song and it calms me and just make me drift away from all my problems

  • philip glass in Mexico aion.mx/noticias/philip-glass-llena-explanada-de-bellas-artes.html

  • amazing author, amazing movie, amazing music.

  • Distinctive Philip Glass, the Master...

  • Phillip glass music is such great muscicien that i dont think anyone could recreate somtething like that or any song he has or will made

  • Love this shit

  • this piece is so beautiful!!!!!!!

  • what is the meaning of this song?, why mishima?

    i'd like to know, thanx.

  • @ander2365

This is the closing piece of the soundtrack to the movie "Mishima", directed by Paul Schrader (1985). Glass wrote the score.

  • @philglassfan one very good movie and one very good piece of music

  • at 12 seconds *clicks Like

  • I don't traditionally listen to music like this but I love it, can anyone give me recommendations for similar pieces?

  • @jdhornbeck

listen to anything by Philip Glass. It's all very similar.

  • @shadowpk08 that has some truth in it. However Philip Glass's music always has a different point, and if you listen to it carefully you can hear differences which lead to different interpretations. Actual come to think of it, he does have a wide range e.g. Pruit Igoe and Koyaanisqatsi (main theme) where both sound completely different but are still world class :)

  • @DB3457 ah, of course there is a tonne of variation in his music. I'm not saying it's all the same, I just mean that he has a style you know? I think it's the ostinatos. like... 90% of his music has that ostinato throughout the majority of the song. Anyways, I didn't mean that he has no originality or anything, I love Glass' music. But you have to admit, when you hear a song by Phillip Glass... You can instantly recognize that it's by Phillip Glass.

  • @shadowpk08 i agree, his music is recognizable almost from the off, but i think of it as more of his trademark. I think the greatest music writers and composers all have instantly recognizable music even if you have never heard the piece e.g. Ennio Morricone and Brian Eno (note to everyone else:I am aware they have some different "sounds" as well).

  • the soundtrack to waltz with bashir is also really moving

  • Debussy: Clair de Lune

    think of Oceans 11

  • @jdhornbeck Brian Eno, Ascent An Ending was written for a documentary about the Apollo missions to celebrate the 20th anniversary in 1989 and fulfilled that purpose admirably

  • The big three are Philip Glass, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich.

    Arvo Part is great too.

  • Beautiful movie, beautiful soundtrack. ::goosebumps::

  • Mishima's dead ,he botched that act, gold bricked out of the military then played soldier to poor reviews. Ishiro Honda

    freakin' better writer.

  • Your right he certainly had self gratifying flaws. Temper that with his work and passion and its hard not to admire his outlook of the world. We need more deep dwelling fish like Mishma today, swimming in the world.

  • Beautiful, leaves me speechless every time.

  • This is a great score. It's unusual, definitely not what you'd expect for a biopic about a major Japanese writer. Yet it fits the film perfectly.

  • Great

  • YOUTUBE : "Lontano " (for marimba / archi)

  • "The instant the blade tore open his flesh, the bright disk of the soard up behind his eyelids and exploded....lighting the sky for an instant."

Mishima, one of the great 20th century master of prose!

  • are you some type of physco.

  • lol, that was the ending of the movie when Isao committed hari-kari.

  • @bereath *seppuku

  • @Japanorama i thought it was also reffered to as harakiri

  • @alflex621 It was one of the tracks in the original teaser trailer. The one that did not show any of the movie at all.

  • true that...

  • Avatar the James Cameron film? ...the only reason could be that someone released a Fake Teaser Trailer which had I think part of this track, or something else from Mishima (by Philip Glass)

  • fantastic

  • i tryed playing this on keyboard but its hardly possible to play it as smooth as with a snare instrument like the ones they used in the this song

  • is this music hard? cello-wise??

  • @willsdixon1930 YESSSSSSSS

  • I saw this movie yesterday because I'm a great fan of Yukio Mishima. This movie is a great representation of his life and novels. I cried, because he was weak, but he struggled because he wanted to take to the top his ideals. And he did, greatly.

  • Deeply stirring as is the movie.

    Quite Evocative.

  • saw him in concert,the best...e

  • One of my favorite films, and the music is a big part of why. This movie takes a lot out of me every time I watch it, but it also inspires me to great heights. It is encouraging and depressing at the same time. I liked when the end of the Truman Show used a little bit of Glass's Mishima score.

  • I'm listening to this on KDFC online. Gorgeous music. I'll need to purchase it! Thanks!

  • Death hero

  • This is a very moving piece of music for me it makes my eyes water and reflect on my past the good and the bad. Glass is a true master.

  • @bushi132001 COOL STORY BRO

  • @bushi132001 coincidentally, I read your comment the moment the pin pricks started. absolutely beautiful.

  • HA.

  • GLASS RULES FOREVER!

  • It reminds me of a dream i had, but now that dream is gone for me.

  • ditto.

  • You can find Mishima A Life on the criterion collection, they just released it. I'm about to go buy it because it looks like they restored all the old voice overs and they have a nice lengthy booklet!!!!! This Soundtrack is in my opinion Glass' best work.

  • dude this is raw...

  • wow i REALLY

     love this music...it is amazing....

  • this music makes me cry....

  • Watch the movie dude? dudette? I am still not over it.

  • mishima n glass ! works wonders

  • its on my faceboook just search Jonathan Catalan

  • Yeah, thanks dude, but...

    ... I don't have Facebook :)

  • Yeah! That's where i heard it!

And I've been watching that "trailer" over and over again to hear that beautiful piece of music.

  • i found that piece of music i can link you to a site that has the full version

  • could you link me also please? i thank you very much.

  • Awesome! My schools marching band plays this in the opener!

  • I'm desperately trying to find "Temple of the Golden Pavillion" by Phillip Glass from this movie, but I can't find it anywhere!

I've only heard like 20 seconds of it, but it sounds a bit like this.

  • Once you discover Philip Glass your life will never be the same!

  • This music is great, but can anybody tell me if the movie is worth watching?

  • Totally. This is my current all time fav film. Paul Schrader is beyond most artsy film directors. I watched this film 4 times in 1 week. I am sitting in work meetings and talking abt crap while this piece of music keeps playing in the back of my mind.

  • where i can find this movie, can you give us an advise, ?

  • I got it from blockbuster online in the US. I just checked and BB is there in Brazil. Not sure abt Argentina? Do you? or just buy a used copy of the DVD from Amazon...I know its a little expensive but its worth it man...I can go on and on abt this movie..but will contain my excitement!

  • yeah, specially being a movie about a such specially and honorable soulas mishima was. His discipline and loyalty is an example for us,

  • this is a GREAT song from a GREAT man, named PHILIP GLASS!

  • I have seen 11,244 videos on YouTube. This is the best of them all. There is something in this music that makes me keep coming back and makes it hard to get tired of. This music speaks better than most words can.

  • yah I know how ya feel; I wrote something to it... but yah its pretty grand

  • Imagine if Philip Glass and Ryuichi Sakamoto worked together to make the soundtrack. Then again Mishima was a man who understood both East and Western Arts.

  • This score is amazing. Possibly my favorite of all time.

  • this is such a gorgeous piece... the new piano version by Michael Riesman is fantastic too.

  • glass is the best in 20 century

  • il maestro philip glass e' uno dei compositori piu'importanti del 20 secolo

  • AMAZING

  • great score, fantastic film.

    Thanks for posting

  • My personal favorite Philip Glass score.

  • Anything Philip Glass does is beautiful to me. I wish someone would post Itaipu.

  • Do you live in LA by any chance?

  • so lovely.

  • I used to love Little Bunny Foo Foo :)

  • amazing film. Music. directing. and the writing literally made my skin crawl it was so poeticly amazing.

  • never get tired of this music...

  • an important movie.. philip glass music ! turns sand into gold..

  • Does anyone know what the text in that headband says? I'd like to know it.

  • "shichisei houkoku". It means...seven times reincarnation for protecting emperor. It is a word of famous Samurai. I don't think that Mishima seriously worshiped the emperor. Mishima just wanted to become a Japanese hero. Mishima wanted the Nobel Prize in Literature than causing the revolution.

  • Thanks!

  • I think he didn't trusted Hirohito and he was afraid that he would be denounced by him.

As for the seppuku, he understood that actions are stronger than words so instead of being a graffic figure he choose to become a symbol like Saigo Takamori (although his motives were more narcissistics).

  • Beautiful beyond words.

  • i understand him

  • I didn't know that there is a movie about him. I am a Chinese but I really like his books. A true man who has given his life to art and us. A so emotional, knowledgeable and complicated person. A true hero.

  • Stunning, captivating piece of music.

  • Great music, my favorite composer and an amazing powerful movie too.

  • Brilliant

  • an awesome song!

  • This is my favorite piece of music, of all time.

    Just beautiful.

  • Glass is the spiritual kin of Mozart, Bach and others.

  • This is one of my top ten favorite films of all time. It is beautifully filmed and rich in so many ways. I have seen it probably 30 times by myself. It does a great job of capturing Mishima's literary vision (though it does take some liberties) and is absolutely gorgeous to look at.

  • Could you explain, I've never read any of his books but I'm interested in them.

  • heartm8: Read his novel "Spring Snow" and his short story "Patriotism" and you will understand his outlook and his popularity.

  • I really want to see this movie!

  • Glad to be reminded of this masterpiece, which I had on tape many years ago. It actually has some gorgeous melodic (for Glass) themes in it. Never saw the movie, however. Will at least look up the cd of it now.

  • I put this in its entirety on my church's sound system one afternoon when no one was there but me and played it full volume so that the whole place became filled with this celestial music and I was in its center. To me it is the music of the creation of the universe.

  • yea his music is wonderful....I own his album " Kronos Quartet performs Philip Glass", one of the greatest musical albums ever!

  • The theme to the film "illusionist" by Philip Glass is just as moving.

  • moved to tears

  • This music will change your life. Too cool!

  • It did.

  • yes.

  • cierto

  • very fucking inspiring and a classic i would love to learn such a hypnotizing song
