Gibson SG Standard Jam

I was thinking about a new guitar and allready i got stuck with a problem should i get a les paul standard or should i get this one. I play punkrock, alternative, grunge, like foo fighters which should i take?

@ELSKYO I would say a Les Paul, because they are much better for alternative, foo fighters, and even punk. The only thing the SG is better for is grunge, because of its muddier tone.

@theminpoes No it's actually the opposite. They also have a little less sustain because of the thinner body (less wood for the sound to travel through). The Les Paul has a sharper crunch (look up Jimmy Page and Gary Moore), the SG has the muddier tone (Wolfmother, even Black Sabbath, which uses a bridge pickup in most of the songs).

@ichicolla I have to disagree, Gibson guitars above all have the greatest quality of sound and durability. I have played B.C. Rich guitars, and they are "ok" only that for metal they are great but anything else they can't measure up trust me I have played a Gibson and several Epiphones they have some of the most amazing, unique sound I have ever felt while playing, Gibson guitars have a better sound than B.C. Rich guitars. They always will be because a Gibson is a legacy not just a guitar.

@ichicolla Actually, the guitar body, wood, wood density, body mass and width, can change the sound considerably its not just the pick-ups of the guitar, even though that has a lot to do with it, Gibson guitars are too expensive but they are made for professionals that make tons of money at playing, and even then once you have a good Gibson it will last a good 60 years so, a 2,000 to 10,000 dollar guitar that will last for a lifetime its worth the money in my opinion its something to save for.

@Swifty2893 if you mean an actual 1961 sg, i'd have to say worse, because whether or not people choose to admit it, gibson pickups back in the day sucked ass. if you mean a modern 61 re-issue, i'd have to say about the same, because both come with alnico pickups, the only difference is the pickguard, and about 1 grand. i have a 2009 standard and i love the sound.

SG's shape is a grower. The more i see it the more i like it. I wanted a gibson for my next purchase and i was convinced i want the LP. But i really don't know. Tonally the LP is more capable in less gain i think cause in more gain it becomes too muddy for my likes. I mean the SG sounds thick and woody (mahogany in other words) but it isn't that muddy. And it has a big plus of being more playable at higher frets (frets which i personally love). Then again i won't the LP solo tone. STuck!

You would be right there, but the Epiphone is still a pretty good guitar. The action isn't great but if it was lowered it would be better. Remember, there is a £700 price difference between the 2 guitars.

Depends on what kinda sound you like.

I like bright sounds, so the SG our an LP with P-90's would suit me better then an standard LP. but if you like heavy with a lot sustain you should definitly choose LP

Just bought this guitar love it! I got an Gibson Explorer and a Fender Stratocaster, and this is my favorite of all my axes, it just fits my hand perfectly and i can play perfectly, the tone is so rock and bluesy love it! It is a les paul but affordable, the quality is just AWESOME the inays, knobs, binding all is just awesome, love it 6/5 for this axe!
