Man he is just SOOOOOO underated its silly...and the thing i always loved about him is ..NO EFFECTS....great tone and no pedals...very old school today everybody has a fucking rack with 50 things on it too "get ther tone".....
Gary played a very unique style of guitar. Its was simple but no one else played liek this. I used to have the album back in hte 70s. Funny when I finally found the CD a few months back, the solo was left out. Very disappointing. That solo was jsut too much fun to leave off.
@briandavisradio I agree with you, only accolades to Gary by fans who actually know about music, I have 28 years listening to REO Speedwagon!!! and no expert critic can doing this with any band, including any academy supposedly specialized in the music!, because it is incredible that REO Speedwagon with 44 years of artistic career has not even won a GRAMMY, I imagine the same thing happens with very good bands in USA and around the world, but I only hear REO Speedwagon awesome wonderful music!!!
@briandavisradio Just because Gary "mastered the basics" and didn't do all the "razzle dazzle" whammy-bar, fingering up and down the neck pyrotechnics that his contemporaries did, doesn't mean he wasn't every bit as good as Randy Rhoads or Eddie Van Halen! A basketball player isn't great because he slam dunks the ball every time--he's great because he scores! You can know all the gimmicks in the world, and never master the basics--Gary did!
@notfragile33 I totally agree with your comment very successful!!!, NOBODY PLAYS GUITAR LIKE GARY!!!!!. AND NOBODY PLAYS BASKETBALL LIKE MICHAEL JORDAN!!!!!, is a good analogy!!!, You know what? is scientifically proven that Michael Jordan is the smartest man in the world to play basketball while his play led to another definition of intelligence!!!!!...
Hey everybody!!! thank you very much for your comments, i don't know because some don't I get notification by email, I got read them all and realized that there was much without approval!!!
@tadnecty Precisely Everyone has right to express their opinion without offending anyone, I know there are many styles to plays electric guitar, and some many good guitarists in the world, what I say is just my opinion and my truth, and is valid only for myself and the people that expresses agree with me, obviously everyone will have their tastes as you say, and in my opinion and my tastes Gary Richrath is The best Lead Guitar in the world, I don't tire of saying Nobody Plays Guitar Like Gary!!!
@tadnecty : I agree it comes down to taste. I will go on record in saying that nobody plays the guitar like Gary......or Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Angus Young, Eric Clapton, Brian May, and the list goes on. Each is unique in their sound, style, and tuning of their instruments. All are great.
Too funny!!......you can't get away with 15 minute "arena guitar solos" these days. Endless noodling playing pentatonic scales incorporated with melodic lines plagiarized from movie theme songs, just to give your fellow band members a smoke and potty break.
All due respect, I was around when this band was big (I'm 50) I liked and still like this band and Gary but to compare him to guitarists such as Santana? sorry he wasn't THAT good but he was better than mediocre as someone said.
You can say what you want about REO Speedwagon, but it was the 5 guys that made this band. Gary and Kevin didn't do it alone. They all had their own talents and put it all together is what made REO!!
@johnnyw12 I agree with you!!, I knew this band thanks to the chords on the Piano and Keyboards of Neal Doughty!! In Your Letter make me know REO Speedwagon wonderful world!!!, and thanks to the unmistakable Voice of the Best Singer in the world!!! you're both dildos......It's Rock and Roll ....Gary didn't cure Cancer, the sumbitch played a Nasty RnR Slide, with some Nasty Addictive Riffs,on a Nasty Les Paul, that made everybody that had an ear for Quality ,pay attention........and he made it look F'n cool like Rock should be.......Love Ya Gary.......
I love the good old days as much as the next guy and liked REO, but a lot of people played guitar like Gary. He was good but he had all the same rock licks that everyone had. Really wasn't that special.... just a good rock guitarist.
@1972mustangsonicboom With all due respect friend but apparently just you know about cars!!!, Gary was, is and will always be one of the best Lead Guitar I've heard in my life!!!
@vagonveloz Well...I'm gonna tell you, you are dead wrong! I've been a musician/bassist for almost 40 years and have been on national tours many times. Racing is just a hobby. If he's one of the best you've ever heard, you haven't heard many or haven't been exposed to truly great players. (no offense) I'm just saying I've seen 100's of concerts and played 1000's of shows. To each his own though... I just think he's kinda mediocre/good. I saw REO and his solo band many times...
@1972mustangsonicboom if you are a musician should have more respect with colleagues, I went to five REO Speedwagon concert and know personally, I have 28 years hearing his music almost daily and REO Speedwagon!!! is the best Rock 'N Roll band to me!!!, I don't need to hear other bands because their music makes me happy!!!if you have 40 years playing bass, you play good no doubt but that does not mean it you're a VIRTUOSO like is Gary Richrath!!! or Paco de Lucia, Carlos Santana...

@g78539000 WHAT?ARE YOU DELUSIONAL?I saw them several times in the late '70's,early '80's,and Gary PLAYS his instrument, and EXTREMELY well too!Did momma and daddy just introduce you to Milli Vinilli?SEEK HELP!

REO really screwed the pooch when they let Gary leave. The new guy is good but no way is he Gary I heard then in concert and all he did was play with the wammy bar on almost every song.
Dave who? I can play Garys stuff... "BUT I DID NOT WRITE IT" it's like going to see Pee Wee Hurman playing in a Jim Carrey part in a movie. REO is a cover band these days, only one original member..... see gary - richrath dot com
The '70's had 'em all. Frampton, Page, Frehley, etc. But Gary was one of those players who just did it well and moved on to the next show. The underrated Genius who powered up R.E.O. for years! He never seemed to be the product of hype or pyro techniques. Just skill! Ask any R.E.O. fan and they'll proudly proclaim that Gary was the man of the hour. Their shows were satisfying and inspirational. I wore my needle out on this track! Thanks Gary!
@coffey91162 According to Kevin there were too many substance abuse problems, and there was a lot of butting heads betrween him and Gary. I saw a show many years back where Gary stated that he got his head on right, and cleaned up. He made the statement that he wanted Kevin to call him and get back together. Apparently there is to much bad blod. Kevin won't get back together with him. too bad, Gary was a great part of the music and show.
@coffey91162 Gary was great, but Dave is really good at filling the spot, some people dont give him credit, same with Bryan Hitt, those 2 guys really took on a major task of filling in for some of the greatest musicians and they did a darn good job!
@fucia11 I agree with you, Dave and Bryan came at a time when most needed and thanks to them has been able to continue enjoying REO Speedwagon music!!!!! and of course thanks to Kevin, and Bruce Neal too!!!, Gary and Dave have different styles of playing the same instrument, like Alan and Bryan, so, Yeah!!! I give credit to all those who have been part of this wonderful dream called REO Speedwagon, but I'm too honest I like Gary's Style play guitar so much, i think Gary is the best Lead Guitar!!
@fucia11 I have a 27 years listening to REO Speedwagon music!!!, and I support the current line up of REO Speedwagon too!!! and I disagree with Gary to return to the band definitely, but I support the idea that Gary could play some shows as guest musician like a part of the celebration of 30 anniversary of Hi Infidelity album!!!, which is a record that became famous to REO Speedwagon around the world and Gary is part of great succes of REO Speedwagon, and I think he deserves it.
Does anyone have the video of Kevin telling the story about near plane crash they were in just before this song starts? I remember hearing it on a simulcast when I was kid, but I havn't heard it in years. If not the video, does anyone know where the audio exists?
Gary was perhaps the strongest influence on my approach to guitar slinging. I try to think "what would Gary do" and then do that...his library of chops was as good as they get, then or now. I can shred yngwie, joe satriani, and steve vai all day long, but give me Gary any day.
@MrSmokeydog Back in the early days of MTV when they didn't have enough videos to fill up a whole day....They would just play concert footage over and over.....This and Judas Priest Live in Memphis
gary is a very unappreciated guitarist. i grew up in east peoria and went school with his son. reo was a great rock and roll band. in my humble opinion he is one of the best of his era. (call me a homer), but reo was big in the late 70's and early to mid 80's with alot of air play along with a hbo concert in the mid 80's. also he is great to party with. that is all we had to do in east peoria. he is a .legend in the midwest
I too went to school in E. Peoria (Germantown Hills) and one of the people I went to school with had a brother that was a DJ with WWCT and knew Gary. I began playing guitar then and he has always been one of my teachers! oo bad kids today do not have the same as we did. My son and his friends all say our music was the best!
Why Gary Richrath is never mentioned among the greatest players to wield a Gibson Les Paul is beyond me! That is a 'bull' of a guitar and he knew how to ride it!
1:35,that unforgettable tone. Its like I am a skinny teen again in the comfort of my Parents house with the fan on the window and a glass of Tang.Instead of hanging around with hobos and drinking Bud light.
gary was always able to play exactly what was on the song without a flaw. this shows how underrated he really is. They were very powerful in concert and sounded a lot harder than on record.
Back in the day, Gary was overshadowed by guitarists like Eddie Van Halen. I appreciate Gary more now, his solos always complimented the song. Many of Eddie's solos don't even fit the song. They're always technically brilliant of course, but its like "Lets take a break in the middle of this song so Eddie can do his fret-tapping exercises."
@bradplumb64 no no no eddie really isnt that great he plays a different style.. and his technnique of finger tapping is why people think hes god... there are much better out there than Eddie sorry
So many good comments here! And "thumbs up" is disabled. Well... yep. Good stuff. Gary felt Rock. Few can wear those pink tops and carry themselves. And he does own one of the top 5 stances in Rock.
LIVE INFIDELITY???? Good God what a great show that was. It was also an MTV Saturday night concert when MTV stood for MUSIC Television. Boy have they taken SUCKING to monumental heights. "Back in the day" truly means something when it comes to good clean rock.
Man he is just SOOOOOO underated its silly...and the thing i always loved about him is ..NO EFFECTS....great tone and no pedals...very old school today everybody has a fucking rack with 50 things on it too "get ther tone".....

Gary could hold his own with the likes of alot of guitarists, however Eddie Van Halen is no doubt the worlds best guitarist, ever !!

Nobody ever talks about old Gary anymore. He is one of the most underated guitarist of all time. He kicked a huge amount of ass.

So many good comments here! And "thumbs up" is disabled. Well... yep. Good stuff. Gary felt Rock. Few can wear those pink tops and carry themselves. And he does own one of the top 5 stances in Rock.

This is awesome, my guitar teacher is teaching me this. The intros easy but you gotta get use to it.

LIVE INFIDELITY???? Good God what a great show that was. It was also an MTV Saturday night concert when MTV stood for MUSIC Television. Boy have they taken SUCKING to monumental heights. "Back in the day" truly means something when it comes to good clean rock.

Seriously, does Gary have a son that plays in a band in Peoria? That's just a straight shot west on I-74. What's the name of the band?

One of the reasons I play a Les Paul. :)

Gary is the bomb! I hear his son, Eric plays guitar too in a band in Peoria Illinois. I gotta go check that out.
