we all see the world thru the lens of our profession or experiences. biologist, sociologists, historians, physicists, teachers, soldiers, butchers and bakers, all see the same thing differently. I see the loss of the nordic gene pool in germany today.
Speers ideas were grand. But much of the really big stuff, like the Great Hall of the People could not have been built because of the poor soil in Berlin. Test foundation segments were constructed to test for settling characteristics. Some are still there. Germania would not have been as grand as hoped. And I am glad that Germania was never built with the cost of lives from slave labor.

Soviet and Nazi architecture was ugly because the ideas behind each movement was about "subordination" of others, first and foremost. People who think ugly things... make ugly things. same as ugly people see ugly things. Naturally this always come out in human beings. Thats why the Egyptian and Greek architecture looks beautifully human.
Nazi architecture came from (copied) the classics of the Egyptians & the Greeks who in turn was copied by the Romans. In the temple of Hatshepsut you can see this is most obvious. Even though I think Speers Reich Chancellery was a brilliant modern take on the old i.e. the ancient Nile valley, most of the Nazi stuff was (Gauche). Most of what you see in Berlin, Prague, Salzburg was designed and built before the rise of the National Socialist Party that Hitler built. What Hitler did do was create a cult with symbols and legends. His talent was creating the mysticism around this that captivated people who were suffering economic turmoil. They were vulnerable at the time. Very sad, disaster ensued.

Speer rose to fame as Hitler's architect, building many of the magnificent and ambitious structures that appear in this excellent video clip. Speers ability to organise major projects saw him ultimately becoming Hitler's Armaments Minister. Irrespective of your views on Germany or the Nazis, this book is well worth reading.

Most of the buildings in the vid were built before Hitler during, most pre WW1. It has also been shown that Hitler's plans for Germania were not possible due to the soil type. The whole thing would have come crashing down kind of like the leaning tower of Pisa.
Most of the neoclassical-style buildings shown were built during third reich. Olympic stadium, reichs chancellory, the outdoor memorial with the columns, etc.
If Hitler had used all the money spent on war for architecture, Germany would be incredible today. Speer's project to build Germania was amazing. Instead, Berlin and many cities have been destructed, Germany have lost territories, and ALL the european countries have suffered from the war. Some great architecture and photography there - music was fine also. Its good to see these landmarks in their historical context.
If anyone knows of any coffee table books with hi-res versions of these photographs let me know as I would love to get hold of it.

If Hitler had used all the money spent on war for architecture, Germany would be incredible today. Speer's project to build Germania was amazing. Instead, Berlin and many cities have been destructed, Germany have lost territories, and ALL the european countries have suffered from the war. Just look at UK : an incredible superpower before the war, and now??

Hitler was truly self centered and demented to have risked such industrial and architectural achievements in the destructive fury of the war that he provoked. The quite singing of Deutschland Uber Alles is both beautiful and hymn like.

80% der gezeigten Architektur hat mit dem 3. reich soviel zu zun wie Nachbars Lumpi. Nichts ! Eine wahllose Aneinanderreihung beliebiger Bilder aus dem 3.Reich.
