  • Just watched it and loved it! Grew up on Lake Michigan and used to surf there when I was younger. Thanks for putting it together.

  • great lakes barrel @6:12

  • Shredding fresh water? Ain't that America!

  • This is a very cool. I grew up near Toledo so it's very cool to see a documentary about the north coast. Respect.

  • shit that last dude was ripping thats insane

  • Michigan rules, one of the best states in the union!

  • What a concept!

  • matt beacham nvr surfed there

  • I'm from grand haven and I surf here all the time I love this movie

  • man that is wild........when I retire my dream is a log cabin, woodstove, surf shop.

  • WHOA seven minutes into this video I realize that Bron Heussenstam, my buddy from Laguna High is one of the surfers.

    CALI LOVE!

  • This is amazing! The waves are so good in this video and Joe and the rest are ripping and the stoke of the locals. They have so much Aloha there! The stoke and dedication and love is so inspirational for me living here in central Florida. Very good and important video to show people that surfing can still be pure and wholesome and full of gratitude instead of attitude.

  • This is classic because it captures the vibe of surfing in the late 50's and early 60's in California. The vibe back in those days was fun - if you were a surfer you were "one of us". Now in California and increasingly everywhere there are waves is that if you are a surfer you are "one of them" - localism. A disease. keep the stoke!

  • Passion.... people needs this in their lives, without it they lumbar through life and end with nothing. Great Docu will add it to my surfing collection!

  • I forgot to mention lifeguarding on Lake Michigan near Foster Ave beach early June of the late 60's/or early 70's. Things were a bit vague back then. But, I do remember at hot morning, that turned into thunderstorms, hail, and for just a few minutes I'm standing at Hollywood/Ardmore Beach with white-duck trousers, orange lifeguard jacket, bare feet, and it snowed. Ya. It snowed in June at the beach. Guess I used to be pretty hardy. No more, live in Sausalito! Hot house flower :)

  • We played football in the side streets of my neighborhood near Winnemac Park, in January. It was 58 degrees below zero with the wind-chill factor when I moved to Seal Beach in 1979. Huntington was 5 miles to the south and I was 25. Dude, it was 90 degrees. That's 148 degrees warmer on the skin! "Love to love ya baby..."

At 56 I now surf Bolinas. But, you won't find it. Me and 2000 other people have the town sign in their living rooms.

    Cha!

  • My Ex- wife took my son from Hawaii to Michigan. Looks like I might have to go see him and show him how to get some cold water barrels.

  • matt beacham 4:00 haha hes the host of new pollution on fuel tv

  • This is possibly one of my most favorite surf films in my collection. I am a Surfer from Texas. And I say that loud and proud. I feel these guys pain on what its like to not have great waves on a regular basis, But as in Texas, these guys make the best of what they get. And that's what makes it the best experience ever. And then, the epic days come. To the lakes, to the gulf, to all the spots that never get respect, and no one knows bout it but the people that live there.G-Lakes are on my MAP!

  • lol surfing the surf is all about surfing (quote Seth Defeyter)

  • i swear i think i caught a cold from just watching this LOL

i love water andwaves but arrg i think only where it's warm!

  • The Great Lakes are going crazy with the current storm passing through. Lake Superior has waves up to 25 feet in some places. Lake Huron has waves up to 18 feet in some places. Tomorrow when the other three lakes go down to 5 to 15 foot waves, Erie and Ontario will be churning out 12 to 17 foot waves. Overnight, Huron will have waves up to 20 feet high!!! It is crazy.

  • Amazing video I ordered the full version online last week. I live in malibu and have a home in Grand haven, MI I can't wait to surf this coming summer when I'm back. I am really getting into stand up paddle surfing which I think is a great evolution for the lakes and catching waves in summer too. Great job on the video. I surf perfect peal away zippers here and if you can surf a wave like lake michigan offers, you have skill Mr!!! Can't knock that I don't care who you think you are...........

  • Hey Sled,

Do you mind telling me what website you ordered from?

It's true, surfin these wind blown, sometimes mushy waves is very challenging at times. But still FUN!!!

  • looks a bit like a wannabe 'dog town and z boys'

  • This story is real and began in the early sixties, so why don't you watch it before you judge it?

  • im not judging the content, in fact I think it looks really interesting. I'm just saying the style of documentary and general story is very similar to dog town and z boys

  • OK, the word "wannabe" is pretty insulting but no harm done. If the style is similar than I guess I did something right. peace.

  • yeah sorry man i didnt really mean it in an insulting way, but yeah looks good just thought the style and interviews etc. was very similar. but cool though

  • @fudgecool Have you actually watched "Dogtown and Z Boys"? Not even close stylistically, story line, method of cinematography...the only common thread is surfing...

  • @batyellofish Yes I have seen the film, hence my comparison with it. The style of documentary is similar of the revolution of the surfing scene - and in Dogtown the skate scene. The interviews with these 'pioneers' some years on, accompanied by the voice over and old footage reminded me of Dogtown & Z-Boys. Oh and the only reason I said 'wannabe' is because the surf isnt as good.

  • Wow, this is pretty awesome. I've tried surfing on a couple occasions, but got my ass kicked by the ocean. Seeing this kinda makes me want to go it again.

  • It's doin it.

i reckon a couple a land locked aussies are heading down that way any day now.

  • Well we do get some decent waves in late summer and fall as well... So it's not all icicles on neoprene hoods... But dedication is a requirement. thanks for your kind words, I truly love Oregon - you are truly blessed to call that place home.

  • Awesome! I grew up in WI about 1 mile from Lake Mich. Moved to the Oregon coast at age 21 and been surfing here for 13 years. Then I finally heard about folks surfing the lakes. Had I known I might still be in WI. Though 33 degrees? YIkes! Oregon water might dip to the low 40's on a really cold day. I can hardly stand that. And I'd imagine finding surf takes a lot more gas money, time, & research. These guys give new meaning to dedication. Respect.

  • i really want to give the lakes a try some time...one day an gonna surf them for sure

  • thats pretty sweet you have more ridable days then the gulf....but nothing beats a hurrican and the gulf coast of fl....but that is much better than i thought

  • Of course I should have added "good" is relative... it is what it is... a lake you can surf. there is no true comparison to a long period, ground swell that can occur on the ocean... but it is still fun to surf in Fresh Water.

I saw some great gulf pics lately, heavy barreling monsters and pristine, peeling lines with light offshore...

    It's all good.

  • Depends on the season, but in the "high season" about 2 days per week, or 8 days per month when it is good! So we have 6-8 good months if you are willing to deal with cold water... You can do the math...

  • in a month how often are there surfable days

  • man dats awsome

  • Rad

  • I surf greatlakes no attitudes on localism just a pure experience! I recomend it Dave from Fenton Mi.

  • lol that looks fun and at least thers no sharks well maybe bull sharks in the summer, but i would still rather surf my homebreak trestles

  • the waves really depend on if theres wind and how hard it is and what direction its headed

  • r waves consistent on the great lakes? if so which ones?

  • no not at all

  • dude i love to surf and i live in michigan! i'm so ready to surf again

  • Right on! We have had a very flat June, we are due for a big blow soon... But keep in mind, most all summer waves are small, it will start getting good in late August.

  • I was getting up yesterday on some great waves near buffalo, we had huge winds for 2 days and had waves getting as big as 5ft and great lines.

  • Right on! We have had a very flat June, we are due for a big blow soon... But keep in mind, most all summer waves are small, it will start getting good in late August.

  • best lake surf flik to date. stoney point north shore.. our roots run cold and deep!!

  • this is so cool! Maybe when there is no snow for the season to board on I'll just grab a surf board.

  • Respect to the Mid West!

  • Thanks... I surfed across the bridge from Buffalo, in fact there are quite a few scenes from there in the full film. (available on Amazon if you are interested.)

  • Great video Im from Buffalo and never surfed it but been on Lake Erie fishing a plenty! Noticed waves break late fall in front of Route 5 which skirts the coastline in front of the new windmills in Lackawana if you ever get out here check out Hamburg town Park. Just dont park there they ticket non town residents which is crap.. Keep surfing I'll keep Skiing come winter,,, PEACE!

  • this s a sweet video guys, i tried surfing in lake huron during the summer that past and i loved it, iv been obsessed about this hobby for years. im now 13 and enjoy it. but the promblem s noone beleives me when i say i surf in the great lakes now this is my proof:)

  • hardcore surfing .. great stuff

  • Thanks... Even though I am shooting all over the world, I will never forget my roots, they run cold and deep!

    peace

  • most insane thing ever..

    salutations from newport cali

  • i know right.. im from corona del mar...and i went back there to play college hockey.. and i went up to lake superior.. and its like surfing a freshwater pipe or backdoor in oct.. its choppy .. and cold.. but its got some push to it

  • hOLY shittin shit.......I thought 13 degrees Celsius was cold in the UK..............man.....you guys are the hardest of hardcore.....

  • The wetsuit technology really has a come a log way... but mostly its our passion for GOOD waves, we don't get them very often so we are willing to let our nose-mucus freeze on our lip and to feel the most painful "ice-cream" headache you can imagine.

I am in Spain now shooting for our new film, entitled Eco-Warriors - quite a bit warmer here.

  • I've been riding waves on my Yamaha Waverunner for years in Northern WI and recently was turned onto surfing the waves instead. We aren't crazy, just passionate about the sport. Love Lake Superior and freshwater better than anything.

  • Right on! You might be the perfect candidate to start some "tow-in" surfing on the BIG storms on Lake Superior and Northern Lake MI. Let me know.

  • It's only a 1 person but that would be awesome, and cold. 9-11 feet the other day but air only 40 degrees. Been on PWCs for 15 years now and seen it all. Just bought the movie, can't wait to watch it and see all the spots I've been to already.

  • That is a great video!

Nice editing and the old stuff is really cool.

Also, I am surprised at how good some of those waves are!

    Good work.

  • thank-you... the Lakes often still surprise me. Like a couple did yesterday; 70 degree water, with few glassy head high sets with power, amazing fun!

  • Whether your in the UP or northern lower, there are great spots throughout. The season is just kicking in up there... last night was really fun on lower Lake MI, overhead with water temps in the 70s. Give it a go, just be smart out there, it can be dangerous when you are first starting out.

  • Hey vince did you hear about the rip curl H-Bomb wetsuit. I think its going to be the future of winter surfing in the great lakes.

  • Yes, I think that next on my list when my 6/5/4 begins to fall apart.

  • Awesome. I go to Northern Michigan every summer, and I've always wondered if it would be possible to surf the lake. I've seen some good looking spots, but there's never anyone out there. Maybe I need to start the trend.

  • Bbbbbbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........

The surfers surfers! Keep em coming lads ;-).

    Those older clips looked brilliant.

  • pretty cool...i live in texas and bitch about the long flat spells in the gulf but yall probably go through way longer ones...yall are pretty core

  • Actually we do get waves in the summer, it was a couple feet overhead about a week ago... They are generally longer flat spells during the heat of the summer than anytime else though.

  • thanks for making such a great video, it just shows that we get surf in our neck of the woods too(the great lakes). i surf new buffalo whenever possible!

  • It was my pleasure (and pain) to be sure. Thanks!!

  • this is awesome....i wanna surf freshwater...im from longisland and its like that here...small in summer...big in winter with 30 degree water and windchills below zero...but if its overhead...you need to be out!

  • Right on! You should give it a go sometime on Lake Erie when its onshore in Montauk and offshore on Lake Erie (hurricane can get good onthe lakes too.)
