If they were going to trade him, they should've waited until the team was in Phoenix, if they were going to trade Zhamnov in the time, thats when they should've traded Teemu.
But the team shouldn't of left in the first place, Teemu would've still been a Jet.
it is sad to see selanne leave and then every jets fan left...then the jets left. i hopethe jets fan understand, selanne isnt coming back in this years season. the new teemu is dustin on defense! lets go jets from pittsburgh!
teemu's career would have been so much better had he gone to phoenix and play with specialists like roenick, tocchet, khabibulin, numennin (can't spell it right) and we might have gotten a cup dammit
while i really enjoy his work in anaheim over the years, it makes me sad and wonder what might have been if he stayed with the coyotes whenever I watch this video. all the disapointed fans whose management didnt care about the teams future or the fans ugh.
I'm a Ducks fan, and I hope our franchise has answered that hope sufficiently. Your city's son is in very good hands; it's quite obvious to fans of our team that his number will be the first to go up to the rafters (which is exactly why Niedermayer's #27 won't go up until Teemu's #8 does).
@buckyhermit Niedermayer had some good years in Anaheim but he shouldn't have his number retired, that honor is saved for someone who's had a whole career of success in one place. Teemu will undoubtedly have his number retired, but after that it's hard to make a case for anyone else. Jiggy and Kariya are possibilities but it wouldnt surprise me if their numbers werent retired either. But now we got a whole new generation of stars with Ryan Perry Getzlaf and Hiller, hopefully they win a Cup or 2
Getting rid of Teemu made no sense for the Jets at the time. They were in the middle of contending for a playoff spot, but I guess it had to do with new ownership at the time.
Man im surprised that everyone was bumed out so much that teemu was leaving iif u didnt remember your team is also leaving. if i was the GM back then i would have kept teemu and during the summer of the relocation i would trade away all the good players for nothing so that phoenix could have a shitty start
@storeflack why would the GM do that? He never approved of this, it was the owners who forced Paddock to deal Teemu Selanne away. If it makes anybody feel better, Phoenix is still bleeding red ink and could potentially be back in the Peg as early as next season.
I'm a Mighty Ducks fan who happens to have both the Selanne jersey shown in that vid in the eggplant and the Kariya jersey in white. But to be honest it wasn't that bad of a trade. I mean sure Kilger did not pan out as well as Jets management hoped he would, but Tverdovsky was a pretty solid blue liner who could pack a punch on offense. He even got sent back to Anaheim around 1999-2000. Still this is not the worse trade Look at the Flyers and what they gave up for Lindros or the Leafs for Kessel
@dailybrother You're really missing the entire point as to why this was such a bad trade......Think about it; They announce YOUR franchise is moving, and one of the greatest players to ever play in the NHL ( and huge reason many still went to the NHL Games during the Jets "Lame Duck Year" ) Gets traded mid-season. How would you feel about that?
Selanne is STILL a superstar....where's Kilger? Where's Tverdovsky?
@JHendrix70 well that is true I have to admit. I think that the weak Canadian dollar at the time is what killed the Nordiques and the Jets tbh. I do feel for your team and its fans though since that was a pretty cold thing to do. Trade the soul of your team and then sell the jersey of the team that he is playing for now is insult to injury. Right now out of Hamilton, Winnipeg and Quebec City, id rather it be Winnipeg since they have an actual ownership group that can help. GL though.
@JHendrix70 Well they are both no longer in the NHL, but remember they did the trade cuz the owners wanted to have less debt to deal with and consider the Canadian dollar at the time: very weak. I think that they did this primarily as a 2 for 1 bargain in hoping that Kilger and Tverdovsky would become all stars since they were both top 5 picks in their respective draft years. But as you said neither really panned out. I agree on the point that this move was adding insult to injury.
THIS was the moment- Selanne would become my favorite player ever, and I'd come to love the Ducks forever!
But come on... give Winnipeg their team back! The Phoenix Phonies aren't doing anything, no one cares for them or about them, and they're bankrupt! And Flordia is NOT a hockey area... the Lightning won a Cup, so keep them, but give away the hapless, annoying and never-loved Pantehrs to either Hartford or another Canada city (Quebec?) DUCKS!
While I recall the trade being made and being heartbroken about it along with everyone else, I recall the trade being looked on as just plain spite by Management even if it was only business. It still made the move of the team that much hurtful and a classier organization may have waited the last 30 games out.
Not sure HOW that was a good trade....Teemu Selanne = Heart & Soul of the Winnipeg Jets, for 2 no names ( who turned out to be nothing...) and a 2nd round draft pick for the Coyotes.
How did you come up with your good trade scenario?
I was a Selanne fan (and Jets fan) since his rookie year, having seen him score goal #40-something against the Kings in 93. Of course I was thrilled to have him come to Anaheim a couple of years later. (though I'm a longtime Winnepeg fan as well, thanks to him) It's a shame that Winnepeg had to break up the Olympic Line, but let's face it, trades are a part of hockey. (don't forget, Kilger, Kariya, and Tverdovsky were all considered "untradeable" by the Ducks at that time.)
What's funny is that the stands shown in this video still looks less empty than most Atlanta Trashers games, yet the Trashers claims they draw 15K per game
Big business has taken over, wonderful statements Pegs Fans. What can you do. Teemu is a natures son and I just know he loves Winnipeg all the way back.
Just want to mention that John Paddock had almost NOTHING to do with this trade. Everyone did blame him because he had to as a G.M make the announcement however; it was the new "owners" of the Winnipeg Jets that made the decision NOT Paddock!
Thanx for that information man, thats reaily interesting to know. I found it a bit insulting, that they were selling selanne`s ducks jerseys in the jets merchandise stands, talk about rubbing salt in the wounds. BRING`EM BACK!
Now that I know the history behind, I can't wait to see Teemu going back to the Peg to play them this year!

Teemu is coming back along with the Manitoba Falcons. He will play again in Winnipeg. His last year in the NHL will be in Winnipeg 2011 / 2012 season

@88Murano Winnipeg Jets, not Manitoba Falcons. And I do think he will retire with the Jets, although he will be going into the HOF as a Duck.

I sat through many losing seasons with the Isles, horrible seasons that weren't worth 2 dollars.
But sitting in those stands is always a treat, no matter if you suck or not, it's still hockey.
And hockey to me means everything........and I am American.

No such thing, no one gives two shits about hockey in Orange grove country.
The Kings, as horrible pathetic as they are, trump the Ducks fan base. That says a-lot since the Ducks actually won a cup.
