@dave38x Actually it sounds like an attempt to avoid responsibility. Just because somebody says 'x was the catalyst' doesn't make it so. They could be lying to themselves to get a scapegoat, 'oh yeah, the drugs made me do it!' I've known a few stoners and none of them were particularly paranoid or dangerous, but my anecdotal evidence goes about as far as yours.
