I'm quoting this from scotsocool since it needs to be seen by those who watch this video:
"The stories of Apollonius were written 150 years after the aleged crucifixion of Jesus. Whether through neglect, carelessness, or outright deception, in omitting this fact critics allow the viewer to assume that the Gospels are somehow copied from or influenced by the Apollonius stories.
Ironic that the video leaves this out about Apollonius. Not exactly fair presentation."
The mocking way they present the video proves theyre not worth listening too in the first place.
In the second instant, if they knew the bible they would understand it. The Jews had different laws from God at that time...circumsise kids on the 8th day, men shouldnt sleep with other men etc etc, why? They were Gods chosen people and HAD to obey his laws to PROTECT them from disease or anything else that could harm them, it was very low tolerance, but the answers are out there for anyone looking
No one "knows" the bible. To know something is to know Truth which is not what religion is about. Religion is about the powerful few governing the weak minded. Religion strips us of humans potential to question - everything.
This is what upsets me to think and see. Guys, you won't understan what it says in the Bible. It was written by Man and it might have some mistakes so you can quote and say lots of mistakes but that doesn't make it "trash" The Bible is #1
Qu'ran? What does it say in there? Do you know their Bible? I don't that is why I cannot say if it is good or not. What do you think? Should they follow it?
I'm about half way through the quran, and so far no. But the question is, should people use the bible as a moral code... that includes stoning children... so I would say no.
I like the part where they say, "No out of context bullshit," and then they pull some random verses out of context.
I'm surprised Penn and Teller would put together such a poorly researched video advocating such strong dogma against Christianity.
Take one piece of advice from Penn and Teller: examine the Bible for yourself. It's the only book that has held up against thousands of years of scrutiny and continues to gain reinforcement through modern archeology and human discovery.
The only way it could be out of context is if the bible later retracts the statements, or they are made by one who is contradicting a higher power.
So most of them I can tell straight off can't be out of context. I think you need to brush up on what out of context means. The bible hasn't held up that well either. It's trapped in a loop of "Well this is wrong, this passage must be non literal Too!"
I have taken your well-meaning advice to heart and suggest you do the same. The word "context" means "The part of a text or statement that surrounds a particular word or passage and determines its meaning."
What Penn and Teller have done is pulled a few verses OUT of their context.
Unlike other religious documents that contain fables and accounts disproved by archaeological findings, the Bible continues to receive confirmation through archeology and other methods of historical analysis.
Powercat the bible has not held up to any scrutiny. Where do you get that it is in tune with anything? The bible was written by men with human motives like power, control and greed. Furthermore and more importantly it has been edited a lot to manipulate people. Religion really deludes its followers just like a cult does its members.
The bible continues to recieve confirmation through archeology and other methods of historical analysis? Where? Did they find Noah's ark? Did they find the cross Jesus was nailed on?! Did they find Paul's skull?
There is NO evidence of any events in the bible.
Sure, Jerusalem and Romans were real, so that MUST mean Jesus was real! - just like how New York is real and Spider-man is not.
There is no evidence, bud. It's all 'faith', and faith is believing without evidence.
Powercat, I agree with what you and P & T say, read the bible for youself, only I wouldn't start at the begining and go all the way through, I would start the new testament at the same time as the old testament and read through both at the same time. There is alot of context that Jesus brings to understanding the old testament.
Fair play, I would reserve the level of ''faith'' I put in the KJV of the bible though.
So far as the video goes:
The stories of Apollonius were written 150 years after the aleged crucifixion of Jesus. Whether through neglect, carelessness, or outright deception, in omitting this fact critics allow the viewer to assume that the Gospels are somehow copied from or influenced by the Apollonius stories.
Ironic that the video leaves this out about Apollonius. Not exactly fair presentation.
Celtic, the intent of the law is to find us ALL guilty and deserving the death sentence [for ALL have sinned]. Jesus [the only one not born under that curse] fulfilled the law by dieing for us. That is how he fulfilled it.
Rom3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Rom3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Acts13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Jesus also said that a new wine cannot be put into an old wineskin, or it will burst. He's refering the old testament vs. the new testament here. Why do you think we call it the old testament? The apostle Paul says in 1st Corinthians that all things are legal for me, but not all things are beneficial. Also like driscola said, the law was created for Humans to know that they need God, Humans do not exist for the law.
The Christian is not bound by the Old Testament Mosaic law [stoning disobedient children, etc]. We have a much higher standard [thru faith in Jesus] to love God and people, even people like Penn and Teller, who haven't done their homework.
You are completely INcorrect. The stoning disobedient children is supposed to be done by the "government", not the citizens. That's what people who are libs don't get about Jesus correcting those who didn't forgive...
Hey Christians, if you don't like what Penn and Teller are saying don't blame them, blame your stupid book. Also: maybe actually read it from cover to cover before ranting against atheists.
Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children. (Isaiah 13:15-18 NLT)
If you think this is truth youre a complete moron. Apollonius lived after Jesus. He was a a Neo-Pythagorean who became a mythical hero during the time of the Roman Empire. Empress Julia Domna instructed the writer Philostratus to write a biography of Apollonius to counteract the influence of Christianity on Roman civilization. The biography portrayed him as a Messiah.
Take some pride in your own brain and save a little space "up there" for your own ideas as you ignore retards like this.
Hardly worthy of a comment but suffice to say all the verses are indeed quoted out of context. I wonder what these guys do believe, what they have as a moral code. Furthermore even if I reject the Bible/Koran/Vedas or scripture in general, where do I get my moral code from? These guys?
In all honesty, you can't exactly follow EVERY rule in your bible, simply because you believe it is perfect. It's not perfect. And not like everything in it is fact. Besides, I doubt you're going to sacrifice animals simply because it says to do so.
who are these guys? ironically, i noticed that they did take out a bible passage out of context : "no man shall go near a woman during her period" <-- that one
I dont understand why they were reading from Exodus which is in the Old Testament when they are talking about the New Testament.
People may argue that they are trying to point out inaccuracies between the two but the New testament is not the same book.
also 1 Corinthians 11; 19-24 talks about the Lords Supper not women on their period

The bible says turn the other cheek... and then it says an eye for an eye.
It's only reasonable to not use something so contradictory as a basis for morality.

Yeah...look, lately..I haven't heard of children being stoned to ddeath, have you?

Thats because people think the bible trash, and dont follow it. At lease muslims still follow their holy book... is that a good thing?

And did you notice it has the exact same rules for slaves?
it advocates buying and sellin them, beating them to discipline them, and you HAVE to KILL them if they disobey you.
So the bible equates children with slaves (at least in the beating and killing).
my mother was not always an athiest, she was born into the baptist demonination, until one day she actually read it cover-to-cover.

Matt. 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
