In this game, you cannot bomb after getting hit. It is also much sparser on resources whereas extends and bombs rain upon you in Touhou.

And compared to other bullet hell arcade shmups, Mushihime-sama Futari is Touhou-esque in the way it throws loads of bombs your way, so the Original difficulties are actually pretty reasonable in terms of difficulty. It's a very approachable Cave shmup for a beginner looking to get into these sorts of games, especially with the Novice Xbox 360 mode that provides anywhere from a cakewalk in Original to a decent challenge for a beginner in Ultra.

I'm not saying I can 1cc futari. I'm just saying that if you play these games enough you start nailing the patterns, and then it becomes quite easy. Also, people assume that bullet hell = automagically harder. A game with 20 bullets on screen can be a lot harder than a game with 500 bullets on screen, it all depends on how it's done.

I know how difficult this game is, I'm just saying that it could be just as difficult with a lot less bullets on screen, and often times people look at very easy bullet hell games with a rain of bullets on screen (like some of the touhou cards) and assume that they must be absolutely impossibly difficult based entirely on the amount of bullets there is.

@Jurihan1 Try dying at any later stage in a Gradius game, especially 2 in the Ice Stage. You'll be hard pressed to find a way through all of those randomly moving ice blocks. Worse, unlike this game, you go back whenever you die, so you can't waste lives through it. You HAVE to pass it, and if you can't, you get game overed...the English/European release called 'Vulcan Venture' has a Continue option, but even with that, it took me forever to get past it because of not having enough powerups.

@Tintinabarn Yeah. The challenge in bullet hells isn't so much to stay powered up and clear the game, because you WILL clear the game eventually with continues. The real challenge is getting better at reading and dodging and eventually 1crediting the game, which is possible with some hard work on the average Touhou game.

With Gradius, it's 'never die, ever, or else' pretty much. I HATE the freaking Ice Field in Gradius II without powerups.

If you die once on the last stage of Gradius I or II, you might as well walk away and let the game take the rest of your lives unless you're somehow able to dodge all of that crap in such a tight space...

This game is made by Cave and they make other shmups, so I think they have experience as they test their games or have them tested by progamers. There are holes so it is possible to dodge everything. However, doing so is just extremely difficult but the developers don't expect the players to do everything perfect. Your hitbox is defined by the small dot on the back of the player.

@noefloe So it's normal that the player is apparently hit but still survives. And don't forget that this isn't the game's only difficulty. There are easier modes. This mode here isn't supposed to be played by everyone because only few can clear it. So it's not unfair, it's more like a niche genre with difficult games.

I haven't played Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Lunatic, but I imagine based on my experience with Extra Mode that it's about halfway between Mushihimesama Futari's Maniac Mode and Ultra Mode.
