In the american political structure, as in so many other regimes, little notion is paid to what really keeps us all alive, and what truly matters - perhaps more than the human race itself does, which is a questionable enough statement in itself - this wee planet, Earth. Ever consider a dog, scratching itself irritatably, before rolling over? Just wait a year. However this may sound, you very well may be in for the surprise of your life. Salude.
what I don't understand is why didn't he have a store of seeds? If you work with the forest for 8 years, you would have time to gather PLENTY of seeds then when he's called back to Earth, that forest would die, yes, but he could have had enough seeds in his suitcase to grow another...
A movie about ecology and the mind set of "ecology" at the time. Did you know that that ship... it's a model that took up a whole warehouse? And, that ship was in many films including the original "Battlestar Galactica?" I knew this film...saw it in highschool as class feature... all I remember is everyone fell asleep...except for me!
One of the most moving endings ever, @jackOcat - yep me too and I'm also 45 and saw it same time as you. Anyone who doesn't get a lump in their throat at the end isn't human!
That's what gets me as well. There are many messages underlaying the obvious ones. The arrogant bastard thought he was superior to all others and that he was on a higher mission. Then, after he murders his crewmates he starts to lose it, and, at the end, he chooses to kill himself rather than face the consequences. Perhaps a parable to our current generation of eco-loonies.
Instead of killing himself, this mother fucker should have stood on trial for killing three people, and then he could have proclaimed to the world as to WHY he did it... I know why he did it. So should everyone...
@justletmeinassholes The authorities would have made him the villain for disobeying their orders. That's how this world works. He was put in a spot. He acted on impulse and in desperation. I don't condone his homicide, but let's face it, the people he killed were descended from the synthetic, spoiled and pampered children we see running around these days. I shed no tears when he put them out the picture.
What's with all the doom and gloom comments? Yes the logistics of the dome surviving for very long is slim, but in Lowell's mind he's trying to buy the life, animals, plants, etc any amount of time that he can, that was his home and he was trying to protect it.
James 1:2 "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."
AMEN. You can count on God, no matter WHAT the problem or situation. God cares and is there for you.
when we trust in ourselves we often feel as if we have no where to go, no one to turn to, no alternatives. We will Justify and UNjust act. IN Christ Jesus we have Answers to any problem, even as terrible as this movie paints the our Future.
In Christ we have someone to turn too, someone who cares, someone who has Great Wisdom to share , if we want it , all we have to do is ask. Do not Trust in your ways, Trust in Christ, Amen.
Saw this at the "Drive In" when it first came out. Wish they still had drive ins here. Going to the drive in as a kid was a lot more fun than watching a movie in a theater.
What good is that going to do? First of all, those lights seem like they might burn out eventually... second, what good is that forest going to do anybody if it's floating farther and farther away into the great beyond? Why didn't the guy just collect as many seeds as he could (in secret or otherwise) and return to earth with them? Didn't anyone else feel more shocked that he murdered his friends? The character is crazy. Violence is the final refuge of the incompetent...
Have only read the last 10 comments. Glad to see that their are some decent human beings out there with hearts. I too saw this (on TV) when I was very young (around the time that I was diving behind the couch whilst Dr Who was on). I'm about to watch the end segment but I remember it being a tear jerker. Peace to you all :o)
This is my alltime best movie in the world...ever!! Far better than your star wars,..... or anything else!! Best scenes are;- the crewe priming the bombs, the launch sequance of the domes, & best of all- Freeman priming his own bombs! then poor little Douey on his own looking after the forrest!...... Brillient!!
This movie had a profound effect on profound its why I'm a radical environmentalist today. A very deep and thought provoking film! Thanks for posting it on You Tube. Valley Forge over and out! ;)
No doubt the best SyFy of its time. When I was younger I was greatly disappointed because I thought it would never be on tv again. Watching this has inspired me to go on ebay and by the DVD. Thanks for putting this on YouTube.
Quite possibly the saddest movie ending ever. Its amazing that no-one has tried to re-make this... but then I dont imagine that Hollywood has enough collective backbone to make a film that a) doesnt need to spell its message out like we are all retarded chimps and b) has an unhappy ending...... (meanwhile we get fed endless dross like Saw 6 pumped out )
James Cameron would be able to pull it off. Or Ridley Scott. Probably Ridley Scott a bit more, given the likes of Blade Runner. It had a certain emptyness about it, and at the same time, a distant beauty.
I actually would LOVE to see a remake of this gem of a film. But I understand what you are saying. The gamble is there. It's either going to be great. Or it'll suck. But one can only hope for the former.
Have you seen 'Moon'? If not, please do. It's great!
Thanks for this. I've had this movie on tape for 4 years but never saw the end cause the tape ran out. I was abit shocked to finally find out what happened. Made me abit sad, for the man and the lone robot.
I saw this as a boy when I was about 12 or 13 and I also cried I meen I was sobbing at the end and my dad said " oh geezz your just like your mother " well I'm 45 now and this movie still gets me and it's profound meaning of saving the enviroment I guess I was always a tree hugger with a big heart.
I was wondering why the lines spoken by Freeman provoke a strong emotional reaction in you. But it's a question that almost doesn't warrant asking as I myself can fully understand the realization of how futile life can become.
Tore me up when Huey got hit and couldn't move much afterward. Then, to watch the way Duey looks intently at Freeman as he is making repairs on Huey. He''s like walking around hoping all goes well. If there was ever a feeling that a robot could sense compassion and sadness, this was it. Then, to be left alone afterall. Great movie and it's 'green' message is timeless. Thanks for the upload!
Maybe. But if the domes were self-sustaining, why was it necessary to attach them to these enormous, expensive support vessels? And why would there be a need for all those cargo holds full of soil and supplies?
ohh - indeed.. And more plot problems - If they are to return to earth, why not bring the domes back anyway?? Why "blow them up"... What "power source" provides the ENOURMOUS amounts of heat it would take to keep these things liveable in near 0 degree kelivn temps? Why did'nt these amputees in the bot costumes make more money? Evil capitalists - thats why.
If you watch close,,after he jettisons the forest,,he turns to huey and says,,
"When I was a kid, i put a note into a bottle, with my name and address on it,, and then I threw the bottle into the ocean, I never knew if anyone ever found it"
He is tossing the last forest into the ocean of space, and he sadly wonders if anyone will ever find it.

Yes, but on the other hand he was the one who was right when it came to the catestrophic effect that mankind is having on the enviroment.
That would be the parable.
