I don't understand peoples trouble with monster zoos first time I got one I closed off the area then came back later went to a choke point and killed them all 1 by 1.
I find that crafting skills are very useful when playing this game. Specifically the smithing skill - it gives you the ability to create more accurate/powerful weapons which you can enchant on the anvils throughout the dungeons. The alchemist skill is also really good for making healing/mana/buff potions. You should update the game too, looks like v. 1.0 which doesn't have a lot of the text in tooltips that convey essential details useful for survival and also changes many aspects of the game.
In my search for awesome DoD let's plays, I found this video.
From the quality of sound and the non-boringness in your voice, I think your Let's Plays will be worth watching! I look forward to a good commentary! c;
When disarming traps like arrow traps and or similar sum such, hide behind a wall or impassable scenery piece. that will block the arrow/bolt if you fail.
Bottle necks are your friend.
Krong's anvils bless/curse equipment. Non magic items are less likely to be cursed
You regerate mana at a pace of 1 per 7 turns. mana regen items decrease this.
Also, Promethemacy+bloodmagic= Easy mode.
dont be afraid to experiment, just do it at full health.
Hmmmm Lute fishes are your best friend. If you collect enough of them at one shrine and tribute them off [IE take stack of fish and click on shrine] you not only increase the chance of finding rare items but can also get a super rare item. Oooh...and you should explore a whole floor before going onto a second floor....grinding might be a bitch but hey its a Rouge like for a reason :P
I am do sad that you couldn't get this working Northernlion (he cites technical difficulties in another video; forgot which). You're getting so much positive feedback to make more, maybe you could post a bulletin about the problems you are having? Perhaps one of your viewers might be able to tell you; there's so much view/replay value in this game, I would really like to see more please :)
bolt of squid does aoe damage, and it even damages the player, that's how u died...those bolts of squid are often used in monster zoos because of that aoe dmg
A bit of advice, don't disregard the Tinkering skill like that. It's a very powerful skill, that not only allows you to make traps, but to keep the ones you disarm! Not to mention you can make all sorts of other things. I'd recommend sticking with it, it's a very neat skill to play with.
I picked up this game after watching how much fun you had with it, and it's great fun! I am however plauged by blue screens of death when playing this, anyone have this problem? The computer is a beast, and can play pretty much anything on max, but this game, it's trolling me :( Got 5 blue screens with 2 hours played
When you were leveling up you were only looking at 5 of your 7 skills, there's a down arrow on the right, also always no matter what try and bottle neck the mobs so you're only taking damage from one mob at a time.
Wouldn't try and play it all the way through in one play through the game does save when you exit just don't do what I did and make another character with the same name else it'll overwrite your previous save :P
Blood + Promethean magic is awesome. With this combo, you will be hoping to find a monster zoo as often as possible. An other one is Fleshsmithing, vampirism and Fungus mastery. As you wont be able to eat normal food, mushrooms are a great source of nurishment. As I often find myself a bit overloaded, the horadric lutefisk cube is a real treat as useless items can be turned into stacks of lutefisk and donated, and will eventually yeld a magic item.
I reccomend that you aren't shy with the anvil of Krom. There are some risks to using it, but the advantages far outweight them, and I tend to find that if I have a "chain" of good runs with it, it will continue.
@DeamonReader The best way to play this build is to clear the first floor and second floor maxing Smithing and getting one point in alchemy for potions(after that is up to you). As you explore aim to make 3rd level Steel weapons. IMO Plastic Platemail is easy to make and one of the best armour to have and it only cost 7 plastic ingots. Plan for your weapon(s), WRITE DOWN RECIPES, you only need to know the ingredents to craft the recipes. 4 diggle eggs in a ingot press for an awsome food item.
i'm not able to give you any advice like you asked for since i haven't played this game, but it irked me a bit when you mispronounced ingot. ingot sounds like ingit. Also i laughed when you cheezed that blobby with the trap. I hope you make many more of these like you did with tboi. loved those.
First off, keep an eye out for those little sparkles on doors leading down. There's the possibility that one of those tricky little things will kill you.
Secondly, it might be a pain in the ass at times, but try to explore the entire floor before going down. No reason not to milk it of all the xp you can get, right? And then all those "worthless" items add up, allowing you to get better ones. Of course these are only two of the very many benefits of doing this.
C.) Unarmed Combat and Golemancy seem to be pretty vicious. Using thaumites (both a spell and a trap) to take your enemies apart. Pushing enemies around seems to multiply thaumites, I guess.
D.) Consider temporarily skipping the 4th floor if you have trouble. (Especially on hard, key word being temporarily)
E.) Use set ups with good back up plans. (Ex:Golemancy lets you build walls.)
Lastly, don't get too comfortable disarming traps, eventually you will come across some pretty nasty acid based traps. Unless you can disarm them 100%, it best to avoid these at all cost.
4) Inventory management in this game gets pretty ridiculous; I wouldn't pick up anything that is for crafting unless you have that crafting skill. 4a) At 15:15, you picked up a Horadric Lutefisk Cube, this can be used to to turn any item into a lutefisk. What most people do is keep the Cube open under the map and throw items they don't want from the floor directly into the cube. (You don't have to take he lutefisk out of the Cube, keep it there to save space)
1) Whenever you get a skill (such as lockpick or mushroom spore) that requires cool down and not mana, use it as soon as it is available
2) Be careful when using certain magic (and bolts) as they do damage to you as well as the enemy. Bolt of Squid, Tentacular Wand, and Bolt of Mass Destruction are all especially dangerous. These items are best saved for the Monster Zoos.
3) Press escape and "Configure Autoloot" button to configure which items will be picked up by just walking over them.
It's worth noting that if you shift-click an item on the ground it automatically puts it in your inventory. That way you don't have to drag stuff around.
I remember back when you did a "Let's Look At" for this game, noting that you weren't a big fan of rogue-like games. It's ironic now since here you are doing a DoD Let's Play and one of your favorite games of this year is a rogue-like twin stick shooter (Binding of Isaac)
Darn you NorthernLion, i wanted you to start a let's play of this after you did your let's look at of Dredmore back in July i think it was, then i got the game last week through the humble bundle, played it a bunch of times, and NOW you decide to do a let's play! Now i have to decide whether to play on blind being surprised at what may happen around every corner or watch what i am sure will be an awesome Let's play. Once again, DARN YOU NORTHERNLION!
@mattiemkiv dont worry, those floors are generated randomly, random enemies and such, as isaac, you wont get 2 same rooms in one course of lets play..
@julko6070 Can still have the game's items and secrets spoiled in many ways by watching someone else play, even if its all randomly generated you all the same stuff is in the game an will show itself at some point. So either way if i watched too many it would be spoil't.
@twonkythechicken Well yes, but this game is more of joke rougue0like instead of a full-fledged rouguelike, not saying it isn't, but I see many things from other rougue-likes like the archaeology is a reference to the archaeologist and just the the billion ways to die like that and this. At its core its a Indiana jones reference, but also a nethack reference.
well i know a good talent set been awhile since i played by i stil know this one thieving acrhaelology swords crossbows mushroom growing tinkering and deadshot
Here's a tip, how about you goddamn study the skills and choose the ones you want instead of picking random AT LEAST ONCE! Just study them and choose 7 before you start the video to cater to how you want to play.
I'm drunk, tried playing this three times, and died all three times. Thanks Ryan. I'm now watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It's all your fault I get to watch Johnny Depp have a drug bender through a wild city. All. Your. Fault.
Oh wow, this looks brilliant. Have you ever played any ASCII rogue-likes, like Dwarf Fortress and Nethack? I know a lot of people on youtube would complain about it due to the, er, 'graphical limitations', but it'd be great to see you LP one of those.
This will be a worthy complement/successor to Isaac. Just so you know, it is essential to explore the entire floor before going down to the next one. This game gets difficult very quickly, and being thorough is important.
also if you get a lutefisk horadric cube, don't open the cube and put the same cube inside of it unless you are a) hopelessly surrounded with crap but still have a way out within 5 spaces if you kill something or b) bored and don't care if you die
Bit of advice, combine a weapon skill with dual wielding, vampirism, and berserker rage. If you get the first vampirism skill at the first level up, you'll not only get fast regenerating health, but also a limitless food source (because the first vampirism skill that's gained through level ups allows you to eat corpses).
If you just want to win, take Promethean Magic, Mathemagic, Fungal Arts, Blood Magic, and whatever else you want. Promethean, Mathemagic, and Fungal Arts all each individually so ridiculously powerful that you can basically beat the game using just one of those trees.
Awesome choice man, love this game. Combined with your humorous commentary this will be a blast! Just picked it up the other day with the indy bundle and having a blast.
@Northernlion Since you're asking for tips, I'd suggest taking a crafting skill on most runs, and especially Smithing if you're having trouble with early stuff like the zombies. You can't guarantee that you'll find a useful weapon via loot on the floor, and smithing is an easy way to ensure you've got a decent weapon early on as you'll always find raw materials in the smelter rooms on each floor.
The currency is "zorkminds" "zork minds". They were the currency in Zork, an early text-based adventure game, and were adopted by nethack, one of the most popular roguelikes.
The best advice you can get is simple: Explore the entire floor before going down. Otherwise you will quickly get overwhelmed. Dredmor isn't a fast-paced game by any means, and trying to make it that way's just gonna result in frustration and lots of dead bodies.
@ChibiSoma And yeah, you died to your own Squid Bolt. Cthulhu doesn't care if you're friend or foe. Use that stuff (and throwables in general) for large rooms.
i needed to do a dump for the duration of the video but i stayed and watched
also i dont know much about this game but something you should consider is turning the sound down a bit so its more in the background, unlike the binding of isaac i dont feel like this music is relistenable. AMAZING VIDEO 100 part lets play?
I love DoD, but it isn't advisable to use it as an LP, because of it's very slow game play. Issac was a great Rogue-like to use because what it lacked in strategy it made-up for in action.
Dear Northernlion, one of my fav builds is a pure mage whose build is these 7 perks: Pyromancy Blood Mage Ley Walker and Archeology. But from there you can make your own choices because you have your combat and marketing set. From there you may want to take up a defensive stance with smithing, master of arms, and artful dodger, or you can take up a more aggressive approach for cqc with smithing, swords, and dual wielding.
The fungal arts are awesome. You should place spores on every corpse early on and build up a supply of mushrooms that provide you with buffs. Later on you can summon a fungus monster that's pretty cool.
Okay so here are some tips from me for you, if you choose a skill you should use it. for example the mushroom thing you had going u used it once and never even saw what the effect of the mushroom was, eating stuff will teach you things! also find you weapon preference swords, axes, maces or staves.
so in general: Find out what each Skill does and go on from there :) hope this helped you!
With 20 minute episodes that would be very quick, considering he is unlikely to acquire the necessary skill after one or two attempts (and starts realizing that you have to basically clear out a floor to maximize your chances of surviving the next).
No way dude, I was just playing this game and thought to myself "I've heard northernlion mention this in a let's play, I wonder if he did a video of it"
So I googled Dungeons of dredmor northernlion and it said episode 1 uploaded 5 hours ago.
i like to watch pom THUMBS UP If u THOUGHT IT SAID SOMETHING ELSE!

Best newbie skills to take to have an easier time beating the game IMO:
Smithing- allows you to make weapons and armour(max asap)
Alchemy- One point allows you to make health potions
Artful dodger- Knightly leap will save your ass
Burgerly- Free lockpicks enough said
Dual weilding or sheild bearer- I prefer more attack but your choice
Axe, mace or swords- I prefer maces as they have the most versitile damage
Deadshot- Will help you hit better with your weapons.
DeamonReader 2 months ago
@DeamonReader The best way to play this build is to clear the first floor and second floor maxing Smithing and getting one point in alchemy for potions(after that is up to you). As you explore aim to make 3rd level Steel weapons. IMO Plastic Platemail is easy to make and one of the best armour to have and it only cost 7 plastic ingots. Plan for your weapon(s), WRITE DOWN RECIPES, you only need to know the ingredents to craft the recipes. 4 diggle eggs in a ingot press for an awsome food item.

1) If you have the skill, grow mushrooms on every corpse you can. They have benefits, and can be used for potions.
2) Always explore the entire floor.
3)Use the sort button in your inventory to make things easier.
4) Sell anything you won't be using.
5) Use ingots and such to make better items if you have the right skills.
6) Take note of your health recharge per turn and plan your movements accordingly.
7) Use traps, since you still get the experience.
8) Scroll when leveling up

You want tips? Ill give you tips!?
1. Collect Lutefisks and give them to the lutefisk god.
2. If you get the Horadic Lutefisk Cube, then place any items that you don't need in there, unless you plan on selling them.
Protip - Put arrows in one at a time, same with mana things if you don't use mana, more lutefisks.
3. Explore the whole floor, it helps a lot, especially on some of the earlier floors,
4. There was a glitch, where if you sold a cursed Item. then bought it back, you would make money.

Archaeology thats a nethack reference, man that fedora and that bull whip were the best.
drunkenzer0 2 months ago
@drunkenzer0 Really? I thought it was an Indiana Jones reference...
twonkythechicken 2 months ago
@twonkythechicken Well yes, but this game is more of joke rougue0like instead of a full-fledged rouguelike, not saying it isn't, but I see many things from other rougue-likes like the archaeology is a reference to the archaeologist and just the the billion ways to die like that and this. At its core its a Indiana jones reference, but also a nethack reference.

Oh man, if you're goint to go RPG LP, you should play Torchlight. It's like a revitalized and simplified Diablo II.

Here's a tip, how about you goddamn study the skills and choose the ones you want instead of picking random AT LEAST ONCE! Just study them and choose 7 before you start the video to cater to how you want to play.

Dose this cost money

I'm drunk, tried playing this three times, and died all three times. Thanks Ryan. I'm now watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It's all your fault I get to watch Johnny Depp have a drug bender through a wild city. All. Your. Fault.

Oh wow, this looks brilliant. Have you ever played any ASCII rogue-likes, like Dwarf Fortress and Nethack? I know a lot of people on youtube would complain about it due to the, er, 'graphical limitations', but it'd be great to see you LP one of those.
FLAMMABLEsquids 2 months ago
This will be a worthy complement/successor to Isaac. Just so you know, it is essential to explore the entire floor before going down to the next one. This game gets difficult very quickly, and being thorough is important.
baronofrage 2 months ago
Hey NL, why don't you continue your Grey's Anatomy episodes? I know you have a lot on your plate, but I think it was my favorite set of videos.
MusicianByTrade 2 months ago
Very, very similar to the binding of Isaac? I don't see it.
Rocky183 2 months ago
@Rocky183
The Binding of Isaac is a cross between roguelikes and The Legend of Zelda. This game is more of a pure roguelike.
Ziiiv 2 months ago
also if you get a lutefisk horadric cube, don't open the cube and put the same cube inside of it unless you are a) hopelessly surrounded with crap but still have a way out within 5 spaces if you kill something or b) bored and don't care if you die

I love watching your channel succeed and grow NL! so many more people here now compared to before Isaac :D

Don't sell the bolts like Clockwork Drill Bolts or Squid Bolts, they sell for a lot.

If you just want to win, take Promethean Magic, Mathemagic, Fungal Arts, Blood Magic, and whatever else you want. Promethean, Mathemagic, and Fungal Arts all each individually so ridiculously powerful that you can basically beat the game using just one of those trees.
MmMmGood 2 months ago
Awesome choice man, love this game. Combined with your humorous commentary this will be a blast! Just picked it up the other day with the indy bundle and having a blast.
Mercino311 2 months ago
If you get archery be sure to get tinkering, don't expect to get blacksmith though!
TheLucidgamer 2 months ago
@Northernlion Since you're asking for tips, I'd suggest taking a crafting skill on most runs, and especially Smithing if you're having trouble with early stuff like the zombies. You can't guarantee that you'll find a useful weapon via loot on the floor, and smithing is an easy way to ensure you've got a decent weapon early on as you'll always find raw materials in the smelter rooms on each floor.

The currency is "zorkminds" "zork minds". They were the currency in Zork, an early text-based adventure game, and were adopted by nethack, one of the most popular roguelikes.
Ziiiv 2 months ago
My favorite loadout for DoD is using mace, sword, and axe skills, duelwielding, burglary, berserker and smithing. A complete Badass offensive set :D
neverlast12 2 months ago
Yay!!! Dredmore let's play. If they are half as fun as your Isaac ones, we're in for a good treat!
Hybban 2 months ago
The best advice you can get is simple: Explore the entire floor before going down. Otherwise you will quickly get overwhelmed. Dredmor isn't a fast-paced game by any means, and trying to make it that way's just gonna result in frustration and lots of dead bodies.
ChibiSoma 2 months ago
@ChibiSoma And yeah, you died to your own Squid Bolt. Cthulhu doesn't care if you're friend or foe. Use that stuff (and throwables in general) for large rooms.
ChibiSoma 2 months ago
Lutefisk is pronounced "loo-teh-fisk" Three syllables and the "te" is vocalized.
Ziiiv 2 months ago
i needed to do a dump for the duration of the video but i stayed and watched
also i dont know much about this game but something you should consider is turning the sound down a bit so its more in the background, unlike the binding of isaac i dont feel like this music is relistenable. AMAZING VIDEO 100 part lets play?

natemixs 2 months ago
I love DoD, but it isn't advisable to use it as an LP, because of it's very slow game play. Issac was a great Rogue-like to use because what it lacked in strategy it made-up for in action.

Dredmor murder took me about 10-15 hours. There's 10 floors with progressive complexity. Good luck Northernlion.
b00zzyBell 2 months ago
Dear Northernlion, one of my fav builds is a pure mage whose build is these 7 perks: Pyromancy Blood Mage Ley Walker and Archeology. But from there you can make your own choices because you have your combat and marketing set. From there you may want to take up a defensive stance with smithing, master of arms, and artful dodger, or you can take up a more aggressive approach for cqc with smithing, swords, and dual wielding.
gotmilk3001 2 months ago
The fungal arts are awesome. You should place spores on every corpse early on and build up a supply of mushrooms that provide you with buffs. Later on you can summon a fungus monster that's pretty cool.
Disasterrify 2 months ago
Okay so here are some tips from me for you, if you choose a skill you should use it. for example the mushroom thing you had going u used it once and never even saw what the effect of the mushroom was, eating stuff will teach you things! also find you weapon preference swords, axes, maces or staves.
so in general: Find out what each Skill does and go on from there :) hope this helped you!

With 20 minute episodes that would be very quick, considering he is unlikely to acquire the necessary skill after one or two attempts (and starts realizing that you have to basically clear out a floor to maximize your chances of surviving the next).
