  • The crew is unbelieveable! The funny thing is taht Hooker (my best idol) has lost himselves in this playing. Mam was trying to help him...!!! And i spent some time watching mama's next year photos. In her future she was not so big mama. Take a look.

  • oh come on.........Sir John Lee of the Hooker's a guitar player.......what do you want....i'm just pleased he's there.

  • From the times when they still had great stuff on German TV. Long gone. Thanks for sharing!

  • this is SO HOT!!! amazing... they are completely tearing it up! thanks so much for sharing this very old footage... what a gem!

  • WOW! brilliant piece of footage

  • dude i aint n'aver seen the john lee move and do the dance steps like he does here....for the BIG MAMA,

just like the rest of the *cast who are called one-by-one to the only/main mike that the 4 of them get2 share ...its her mike, no doubt about it- but what a tree of a blueswoman... always nurturing and never scared for her talent.

    bitof wikipedia...

    RIP Willie Mae(Dec 11,1926Jul 25,1984)

    sorely missed

but forever here on the U2ooB!

  • mon alter ego.......

  • Damn! I was born during the wrong decade! Im 25 but I can't stand alot of the music from peers in my age range

  • so was i mate..have yiu tried T-Bone walker, sonny Boy Williamson " the first ", then and only then go to myspace and type in "John Campton" ......................todays bluesman with heart and appreciation.

  • It's Big Walter baby! Man could these cats wail!

  • never knew that john lee hooker could play the harp. this is truly precious stuff

  • Dude, Hooker can't play tahe harp, did you hear him?! lol!

  • how come i know all these harmonica solo's so well??????! like the back of my hand, it was the first time i heard it and i was playing along in my head.

all i listen to is Canned Heat, and John Lee Hooker,

did The Owl from Canned Heat get solo's from here?

how come i know these notes so well already!!

  • "LAY, around here" Correction.

  • PUT BIG MAMA IN THE HALL OF FAME!!!!!!

If anyone can locate the PUBLIC BROADCASTING film that has Big Mama singing "...I'd rather drink muddy water, sleep in a hollow log, than lie around here with you, babe, and BE TREATED LIKE A DIRTY DOG" please, get it up here on Youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • AMAZING!!!!!!

  • aint possible to get any better!

  • Can't stop hitting the replay

  • unbelievable line up of round robin

  • Unbelievable, I'm hooked.

  • Killer harp from Big Mama - she is incredibly good ! No one can come close to this woman . RIP

  • Willie Mae Thornton-I wrote this on another vid of hers-just trying to stir the pot... Can you believe she's NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? UNBELIEVABLE. A legend like her. And she sang Hound Dog first. Number one one the R&B charts in 1952 for 7 wks. As far as harp playing-she's certainly the best woman out there- but I have to give props to my favorite harp player of all time, Little Walter. Great taste in music my friend! Peace.

  • Little Walter is a legend too ! Did you see the movie " Cadillac Records" about the start of Chess Records , featuring Little Walter , Muddy Waters , Etta James , - it is great !

Big Mama is certainly underappreciated in the music world - that's too bad , because she was a female pioneer in early Rock n Roll . At least a lot of the 60's 70's musicians such as Janis, Canned Heat, Manfred Mann , Creedence Clearwater paid tribute to those great early bluesmen and women !

  • Sure, I saw the movie. It was good. I didn't really care for the acclaim Beyonce got as Etta James. I don't think she holds a candle to Etta-for singing the Blues. As far as the movie and Little Walter-the portrayal of his death was inacurrate, but his drinking problem and temper were accurately portrayed. I assume they shot it that way for the drama. He was THE only person to be inducted into the RRHOF for playing the harmonica. He's in there in the sideman category. He's a legendary player.

  • Actually, I have to respectfully disagree . It was Beyonce , whom I have never cared for at all , who inspired me to seek out Ella . So,that is a good thing , right ? : )

Now I have 5 Ella Cd's on my playlist - amazing voice . Sure, Ella LIVED the blues, but Beyonce held her own and she sure can belt out a tune . I thought she did a great job " acting " the part of Ella who is a legend .

I will have to acquire some more Little Walter -always been a sucker for a harp player :)

  • It's all good, disagreement is healthy and makes for good discussion. I think Beyonce is wildly talented-her voice is wonderful. I just don't think she has the subtle power of a locomotive behind her voice like Etta does/did. With Etta, you don't know she's in your face with the blues until she's got you by the throat & your watching with your mouth opened. Beyonce hits you right up front & in my opinion, overdoes it. But it's totally cool, either way you're right, you met Etta through her. :)

  • I am always looking for more killer music ! I find myself more and more going back to those Chicago blues greats

Check out Shelley Fairchild And the People on youtube singing live at Nashville's 3rd and Lindsay . Based on your Favorites playlist,I think you might like it -she also does a great duet with Steven Tyler " Misery" . I also am a sucker for " in your face" belt-it-out music . The power and passion of a voice lures me in . I hear you on the subtlety - a permanent hook.

  • I will, thanks for the tip. Looking forward to checking it out! Peace...

  • Damn Walter Horton owns this place!!!

Plus he sure is a funky dancer, too..

  • wow she can sing and play the harp she's one of the best
