  • Oh, yeah. I hate him... I hate Cal Chuchesta.

  • I just realized, False Preist of Montreal would have been a better band name then just of Montreal.

  • Man am I the only one going with Satanic Panic in the Attic on this one?

  • of Montreal is my very favourite band as of now. I listed to cherry peel everyday, mostly because of my fiance. It's her favorite album by them. I don't ever see me tiring of their songs ever.

  • cherry peel

  • of montreal is one of my favorite bands and i think compared to their other albums this is maybe a 6.5, hissing fuana being a 10. the only song that benefits from the intensity and precision is coquete coquette,

  • Cal <3

  • the past is a grotesque animal is their only good song i think

  • i gotta give it a 9 or a 10, i like how the sounds are all mashed together and stuff, i dunno why i guess my mind processes it well. i love the variety and everytime a new type of sound kicks in to the songs its like a mini eargasm that just adds to the song i dunno, i love every song on this album, and i can say that for a lot of them

  • i would give this album an undeniable 10 because it is EXTREMELY creative. Especially tracks like "Hydra Fancies" and "Godly Intersex", but I respect your opinion and I understand that there are moments that can get overwhelming to the average indie rock consumer. However, this album is in no way as overwhelming as their last one, "Skeletal Lamping"(which I personally thought was brilliant), so I would say listen to THAT one first before you review this one.

  • I haven't checked out False Priest yet, but I'm sure it's probably awesome. My favorite of Montreal album right now is either Hissing Fauna or Cherry Peel.

  • There are too many sounds for my ear hole!

    Really?

No offence but what qualifies you to say anything, besides of course the freedom of speech? They grow as artists every time they make an album, they have been around for more than a decade, which means they have staying power, they are no one trick pony. All I am saying is that if you don't like all the sound, why the hell are you reviewing music? Seems silly to me.

  • he's actually like 5'5. i've met him. it was life changing.

  • I saw Robin Trower and Of Montreal about the same time, same venue. Robin Trower is 60+ years old and his set was literally 2X louder then Of Montreal. All he and his band did was play their instruments. Of Montreal was just a show of Gimmicks.

  • I'm going to kill you.

  • Another great review: "I wish Kevin Barnes wasn't trying to just pour ten gallons of sound into my head within a 30 second time span" Haha, true. It's not quite as schizo as their previous release. I just began listening to 'False Priest' and for now, I give it a strong 8... on it's way to a 10, perhaps. It's definitely a lot tamer than 'Skeletal Lamping' and the songs are a tad bit more cohesive and focused. It's nice to have some new jams in the catalog that are easier to sing-a-long to.

  • in my opinion, of montreal has released 3 masterpieces in a row. only three bands in the modern era has achieved this acomplishment.

  • @neglectoid which three?

  • Favorite = Skeletal Lamping

  • Great review. Fave = Hissing Fauna

  • False Priest 7.2

  • i think Hissing Fauna was the pinnacle of Kevin's creativity. Although Skeletal Lamping, and now False Priest both have great moments...as a whole they don't come across as truly honest records. I know Kevin is on a big "creating organic music" kick....but seriously...there is room to think critically about what you are creating. and it seems like Kevin has abandoned that notion.

  • I'm pretty sure I'm like one in twenty people that still listens to Cherry Peel. Ha

    (:

  • @themdirtybasterds tim wish you were born a girl flowing into Montreal is one of the best moments in of montreal history. i also love that record.

  • @erikbshiii He can't just return to what he used to be. Kevin changes with every album he makes.. He has even said he can't imagine writing anything like the Bedside Drama anymore because he's become so different and he was in a much different state of mind than he was back then..

    anyways, loved false priest

  • I would give it a high 8 i personally liked skeletal lamping better but i still enjoyed this album

  • cant believe he didnt say how much famine affair relates to the cure

  • and yeah I meant patience sorry.

  • The bass line isn't as loud as it used to be? What quality speakers were you listening to it on, because the bass has never been BIGGER or LOUDER or more INTENSE ever before on an oM album.

  • Also I'm confused. Because at times you say the sound is too flat - like a one track sound. But then later you say there's too many layers. You also failed to recognize the concept of the album, and the interesting monologue at the end. I don't care if you give the album a poor review, but you should stay consistent and not be so complacent. The album deserves a high 6. Oh, and btdubs, you can't have a high 10, because the scale stops at 10.0. ~

  • @reximilious flat usually refers to the lyrics not the instrumental part. I personally didn't have the patiance to listen to all of it so I hope this is what he meant.

  • I give False Priest a low 8... Some songs I loop for a while and others I skip(for now) Because we all know Of Montreal music creeps up slowly on one's ears and soul. Hissing Fauna gets a HIGH 10 for me... a personal favorite!!!

  • It wasn't my favorite oM, specifically because kevin barnes has lyrically gone downhill. From Cherry Peel to Hissing Fauna his music has been incredible, but with the last two albums he is destroying a strong cult following that existed long before Hissing Fauna, I feel, because he isn't trying to write the best pop song ever. He would do us all a favor by returning to what he used to do very well, and that was crafting creative lyrics, not just stream of consciousness bullshit.

  • please kill urself faggot, stop making up things and then using them as excuses to hate something better than god, u r a fucking faggot and apparently dont know music

  • i give it a 10 i can not stop listening to it ever since it came out

and i agree with you on a lot of points but i disagree with you saying that kevin barnes is trying to pour 10 gallons of sound into your head. i personally love this album along with their others and i really can not pick a favorite they are all incredible

im also surprised you didn't mention anything about the song coquet coquette on this new album

  • I looooooove skeletal lamping

  • i fucking love cal chuschesta......

  • I agree with you on some points but not that it's too dense. Maybe if the tracks lead into one another, like they have on the last few albums, I'd be more inclined to say "yeah, That's right." But you get breaks in-between songs to kind of clear your mind. I love how you can listen to this album and get hear something different with each spin. I also love this album's low end!

At LEAST this album is a solid 8

  • I just reviewed it on itunes. I agree with you, there are many great moments in the wall of sound but they're buried for the most part. The lyrics border on "diary like" which I feel distance me from the music. I really enjoyed sex karma though, fantastic duet, and the lyrics are classic. 6.5/10

  • speaking of the tallest man on earth, did you buy the whole tallest man on earth EP? its really good! you should review it like you did to sufjan's EP last month.

  • LET ME GIVE U A SAMPLE OF MY RHYMES WHICH WILL PROVE AMPLE TO SHOW U HOW MUCH U IS A PAIN AN I BE RICH FLYIN ON PLANES GETTIN LAID BY LADYS AND WHUTKNOT THEN MASTURBATIN AND GITTIN DA RUB THANKION THE HEVINLY FATHER ABOVE THAT HE GIVE ME SO MUCH LOVE AND THAT I GOT THE RUB AGAIN AND MASTERBATIN JUST STATIN THE SITUATION AND MAKE THE BICH CLEAN UP MY ROOM THEN TAKE A SHOWER NONE TOO SOON LIP SINC LIKE DA BLAK KEYS GET THEM BICHES ON DE KNEES THEN GO HOME AND TAKE A PEE AND ANOTHER RUB

  • I don't agree at all about the songs being ruined by being too complex. The density of the instrumentation is what I love about oM. If anything, this was less dense than Skeletal Lamping, which is my favorite album of all time.

I think some of the singles of this album are the best songs oM has ever done, but as a whole, it's hit and miss, and nowhere near their best album. I miss they way the songs flowed into each other on Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping.

  • I love the good tracks and hate the bad tracks. It's just too polarizing overall.

  • Expectations were pretty low after watching this, but I actually thought it was pretty decent.

Like a Tourist and Hydra Fancies were the stands outs for me.

  • i think this is slightly better than you say, and much better than Skeletal Lamping.

on a sidenote, that Tallest Man on Earth song is so incredible. One of his best. Though I suggest tracking down the earlier version that was used a bonus track to The Wild Hunt in some places. its a slower piano led ballad, and it is just jaw dropping.

  • man get it together false priest is a solid 7,,, kinda disappointed with the 5 not going to lie

  • That messy collar got you a thumbs up from me, buddy. nice review.

  • hahah i mean the chick killed his betafish

  • The guy can write good songs, no doubt about it. But it seems like everything he does is unbelievably pretentious, and therefore no fun to listen to.

  • i'm not a fan of Of Montreal but i will admit they have some good albums but it's just i could never really get into listening to them. i do own two of their albums "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?" and "Skeletal Lamping" but that's about it. I really couldn't persuade myself enough to get "False Priest" so i'll give it a 4.

  • I agree with just about everything you said. I feel like Barnes is trying too hard now. False Priest seems like all flash and glitz and not as much substance--or even as good of songwriting. At least Skeletal Lamping kept me interested with how schizophrenic it was.

I don't hate the album, but it's definitely not a favorite. But "Like a Tourist" has to be one of the best songs they ever recorded.

  • Oh, Hissing Fauna is my favorite, it being an Indie Rock masterpiece and all, followed closely by Satanic Panic in the Attic.

  • Are you doing any good album reviews anymore? How the fuck did weezer get a 7/10 and this gets a 5/10?

  • Been an of Montreal fan for a long time, and I agree with this review. But I hope your score didn't turn people off, there are true flashes of brilliance on this thing.

  • I know what you are saying, but I disagree. of Montreal fans like myself have most likely grown to love the extremely complex layers of beats over very simple and blunt lyrics. However, some songs do get lost in the beats and become ubrecognizable, but there are probably only two tracks that I think are like that. Overall though, I am thoroughly satisfied with this album. I would give this album a 7/10. My favorite oM album has gotta be Hissing Fauna. Can't ignore the classics. ;)

  • Which album is a 10? Does such a thing exist? Guide me! Hahaha...seriously

  • Does anyone know where I can find the torrent for this album_

  • I really enjoyed the 'Satanic Panic in the Attic' album, and the artwork for this one is very similar too. I enjoyed the track 'Like a Tourist', and I think some of the other songs will keep my attention too. I gave a thumbs up to your messy collar (ha ha) :)

  • Anthony are you going to review The Tallest Man on Earth ep?

  • Was with you on this, at first - having listened to it a few more times, have to disagree with the 5/10 - it's too busy, yeah, but lots to chew on - this is THE Post Psych/Sly Stone album MGMT would've loved to have made.

  • @PostcardKittenMeow Ehh, I'm sure MGMT is content with their latest LP. I know I am d:

  • @PostcardKittenMeow Nice, spammed. How charming. Glad I live in England.

  • 4:53, finally you admit it ^^

  • Hi Anthony,have you checked Steve Mason's ( former Beta Band ) new album Boy's Out ? it's really fantastic !

  • haha, just finished the radiohead live in Prague. The second half is not as good. The crowd is amazing though.

Yah, have you ever given out a 10? Do you have a 10 album in you life?

  • have you ever givven out a ten?

  • Different clothes, same bowl.

  • I'm looking to get into Of Montreal. Any suggestions of which album I should start with?

  • @MrRoflcopter someone else would say hissing fauna are you the destroyer, but I consulted with Cal Chuchesta and he recommends satanic panic in the attic

  • @MrRoflcopter the Sunlandic Twins is the best one i think

  • Comment removed

  • @MrRoflcopter I would say the most instantly accessible one is Gay Parade. Its what got me into them. But my favorite has to be Sunlandic Twins

  • The bass is louder than it ever has been, this album probably has the best bass but its just very low, it's an album that you need to listen to through headphones or in a good car system, but I can still enjoy it in any fashion, this is probably in my top 3 of of Montreal albums and they are my favorite band of all time so I'm gonna give it a 10, sorry if that seems too much

  • HURRAY!!!!!!!!!

  • I noticed a slight continuity error. you should fire your continuity supervisor.

  • This album was VERY weak to me. Skeletal Lamping was 50 times better. I haven't felt this bored listening to a Of Montreal album since Aldhils Arboretum. Shame, sounded pretty promising with all the guest vocals.

  • I stand well firm by my decision that Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies is of Montreal's best album.

  • a strong 2 ha. sorry. kevin barnes forgets people's favorite song by him is still the antarctica one, so simple and sincere and not so indulgent.

  • that poor beta fish.

  • i really try and avoid rating of montreal albums until i listened to them about ten times to be honest. i know that might sound ridiculous, and i hate it when people tell me "oh you need to listen to this album way more to understand it" but with of montreal repeated listens tend to make me appreciate them way and way more. for instance, i hated skeletal lamping at ifrst, now it's my favorite album by them. so i abstain from rating it...for now :P

  • @postmodernartsucks I had exactly same experience with Skeletal Lamping as well

  • i love cal chuchesta

  • Comment removed

  • High 8 or 9. And so far my contender for AOTY

  • man I really liked this album, I've never listened to them before but now I'm a fan. strong 7 if not an 8

  • Of Montreal are not a great band except for Hissing Fauna, which was in my opinion one of the best albums of the decade.

  • light 8 because it grew on me. I , for one, like the sound overload.

  • Cal Chuchesta doesn't seem to be eating much

  • Light 5, ouch

I would say it's a sturdy 8 because I love the production on it and the lyrics as ever are fantastic. I'd say it was maybe their 3rd best album... it's certainly a grower too the first time I heard it I sort of pulled out little ideas which I liked but on repeat listens the cohesive side of the music really stood out. It's much better then Skeletal Lamping anyways

  • I'd give it a 7 or so.

  • Favourite is Adhils Arboretum.

I either love or hate False Priest. Not sure which. It's stuck in my head currently, so that could bias my decision.

I really think the excessive flamboyantness is grating on me. It was entertaining in Hissing Fauna, but too damned much on Skeletal Lamping. False Priest has toned it down, but I don't know if it's enough. The jury is still out.

Really enjoy Janelle Monae on this though.

  • Hissing Fauna is definitely my fav

  • Cal Chuchesta! Also, I personally loved False Priest.

  • Messy collar! Thumbs, Up.

  • Hey Anthony, don't get me wrong (I did not listen to False Priest yet and never was a big fan of them) but this review sounds to me like you've not listen to it enough. At least thats what I would say about records that I didn't "get" yet.

    I love you anyway! :)

  • so close, I predicted a 6 :(

  • I'm currently really digging this sound orgy that is this LP, but mainly because it's new material from of Montreal. But, I still have to agree to agree with you, for the most part.

    Fav of Montreal album(s)?

I'd say say Hissing Fauna and Satanic Panic.

    Fav EP?

    Def Icons, Abstract thee.

  • I see Kevin Barnes as a Jim Morrison of our times. Hes a poet and a clown.

I honestly think Kevins music is just getting better and better. It just takes more time to get into than, say, Hissing Fauna did. I give this album an 8/10.

  • @SOS721296 that would be apt considering i hate the doors too.

  • @SOS721296 You had to be expecting a shitstorm for this one right? That's kind of a ridiculous statement.

  • Fuck Yeah!! New Tallest Man!

  • needledrop ftw

  • Why don't you do Body Talk?

  • I agree with you. I checked out the stream but lost the desire to keep listening a few tracks in. Perhaps this is just due to my coming from Hissing Fauna, the only album of his I have, but this record seems aimless, both in overall structure and on the level of individual tracks. Hissing Fauna was a bunch of tight, effective pop songs; this one feels like its only concern is being novel.

I didn't stick around though; maybe it got better. I like your videos, by the way.

  • I love Cal Chuchesta :P

  • I expected Cal to use the too-easy comparison do Dylan...

  • No Freddy Mercury with the other flamboyant frontment? Forshame

  • I heard tmoe play that song last month... IN A CHURCH!!!!

  • Probably a 4 for me. The falsetto - I just didn't dig.

  • Thanx for the stuff, I got a suggestion for a review: radiohead's new official free download of their live prague concert.

IMO a primo example of a band, "at the pique of their powers."? It's empty, it's full, it's natural. If you haven't yet, please to enjoy!

  • Dammit, Cal Chuchesta can go to hell!

  • I just don't like Of Montreal. I'd much rather listen to David Bowie or Brian Eno's glam rock stuff if I'm going to listen to this type of music. Of Montreal does little to reinvent what they did, and in all honesty, just makes the ideas that glam rockers pushed around really annoying.

  • lmao cal

  • Satanic Panic is the most consistent

  • I'm a huge fan of the band, but this album just didn't do it for me. It was way too over the top for me. An overload. But because there were some really good songs on there, I'd say a somewhere between a 6 and 7. "Famine Affair" was especially good.

I enjoyed Satanic Panic and Hissing Fauna the most.

  • Cherry Peel is the only answer to your last question. Far and away their best album.

  • i'm seeing them live pretty soon. for the second time

  • Satanic Panic in the Attic is the my favorite album of theirs. I got into them via Hissing Fauna though, so I still love that one. As for this album, I'd give False Priest a.. 7, ish? Sounds good, but I agree with what you said.

  • i listened today, and i'll give another and then get back to you on my thoughts about it.

  • I can't stand Of Montreal. I gave this a quick few listens and it is just more of what is bad about them. Throwing as many sounds, synths and faux weirdness into something as possible isn't clever. It just shows how much the band misses the point completely.

  • Cute.
