  • Great Ideas! Thanks for sharing.

  • nice butt

  • Nice video! Have a great harvest! I have a balcony about your size and this is my third year growing.

  • give your basil redbull so it can grow big and strong, side effects may include your plant flying away because they grow wings.

  • Herbs thrive when they are regularly trimmed. But don't be too drastic. Cut the herb above a node (where leaves are coming out of the stem) and be sure to leave a few sets of leaves below your cut. The thing about the flowers I found to be true. My basil is going NUTS! I'll record my container garden as it is these days along with pictures of what it looked like when I first planted it. I haven't had much luck growing things like peppers from seed. Any pointers, please message me.

  • Your basil looks amazing!!!! Nice work.:)))

  • very nice ^

  • super..good work..comment for my video

  • No, water early morning...if you water at night, you will get fungus or disease.

  • look up earth buckets on youtube they work really well i just made 2 and have them filled with carrots, basil and am saving the other for my cherry tomatoes. i got my buckets for 2.48 at walmart but if you look around you may be able to get them for free.good luck . and you will always get better with practice!!!

  • Great vid. I have plants on my balcony too but squirrels are always intruding on the soil in the planters, what a nuisance. Do you get that problem also?

  • fucking racist nigger.

  • Wicked! *thumbs up* You have a lot of cool stuff goin there! ; D I wish I could use my balcony as well, but there's too many idiots around here. lol I gotta replant my peppers and I'm gonna try some hot ones this spring : ) Cool vid! Can't wait to see how it goes for ya.

  • thats so cool good job growing that =)

  • Your container garden is really nice. I have a container garden as well. and yes

YELLOW leaves means it's being watered too much, just pick them off. I just wanted to mention i have a basil plant and I'm always pruning the leaves and pitching off the flowers and I also keep it in half shade half sun.

My cilantro is NO WHERE near the size of yours it seems like it's not growing but it's not dying... ANY TIPS ON THAT?

  • it is ok to water at night but it can produce mildew or rotten in roots it is best to water in the early morning at aroung 7

  • I haven't read through all of your comments so I don't know if someone mentioned it before but, fertilizer might help you out. In the Gardening Stores I have seen the miracle grow for vegetables. Buy a small bag and mix a little with your soil and see what happens. Just don't over do it. Good Luck. Love your garden.

  • love ur garden!!! :)))

  • nice garden...how big the container shuld be for tomato or pepper....

  • For the future..I'm not sure if you've done a container garden this yr but there are a fe colors you need to recognize. If the leaves are turning yellow, your plant is deficient in nitrogen. If your plant's leaves turn purple, it is phosphorus deficient ...osmocote will take care both issues. The plants will burn through the nitrogen in 2-3 mths so I suggest using osmocote, orange peels, banana peels...or whatever organic matter you can find.

  • hello there gardening sista ! Here's a few things i learned about container gardening, tomatos and pepper plants need space planting them in a 5 gal bucket or pot is best, For your basil the bigest mistake people make is watering it tooo much.... what till its almost dry then water. hope these few tips help you out ,happy gardening !! : ))

  • Really nice video. I have also started a balcony garden and its nice to see others trying. U r doing a good job. keep it up!

  • Hi great video! I'm just starting a container garden... how often do you find you need to water herbs on the balcony? Also, any problems with insects? And, someone told me wood planters are better than platic (I have no idea why). Is this true?

    Thanks!

  • listen little girl with your basil and your cilantro, & your soon your mint, are all starting to flower.

nip the flowers off with your fingers. becasue when the plants start to flower the greens start to die off. its going to seed. if you WANT seeds from the plants let it happen & re plant those. if you want the benefit of their greens, NIP the flower buds off.

re your containers, if you want more plant space, just use a window box & border your whole upper hand rail- strawberrys are easy

  • @poosaypirate Thanks for your tip. Now here's mine... Comments like this would be better received if they didn't contain such a condescending tone. Good day!

  • @blackphd2b well said and apropos, blackphd2b ... beautiful and refreshing video ... thanks for uploading and hope you have more on your balcony garden. - peace

  • You need a lot bigger pots for those plants. Especially the Beefsteak tomato. Nonetheless nice garden.

  • @Stohz Thanks for watching. This was posted over a year ago and I definitely upgraded the plants to bigger pots. Still can't get big varieties to flourish fully. :( Ah well, will stick to cherry or grape varieties.

  • @blackphd2b 'tomato container choice hybrid' sold online by Park Seed Co.. Determinate short vines perfect for containers, yet yield full-size tomatoes--and LOTS of them! I've been growing them for past 3 years on my balcony. You should try them too.

  • you have such a hearty laugh, love it, it makes me want to laugh

  • @BeauteousBeing Ha! Thanks. Best compliment I've received on YouTube. This made my night - and will serve as my reminder to laugh more.

  • Mint is an invasive plant be careful where you put it. The tomato plant looks like it get use a bigger container. All basil needs is plenty of water and sun. A fertilizer once a month maybe. But it looks like your doing a fine job. I hope you keep it up. mesclun salads are easy to grow in long flower pots in the spring and fall. All the best to you and your garden.

  • if you water you plants at night , it will create fungus in the root, you have to water in the morning, before the sun start to get hot

  • Yup. For your Cilantro, try to keep the biggest, tallest stalks cut to keep the plant in control and keep it from sprouting too soon. That frilly growth and flowering of your Cilantro means that the green leaves will now loose their flavor.... BUT now the flowers can be dried so you can save the seeds for more Cilantro next year OR save the seeds because they're the herb, Coriander :) Hope this helps some...

  • Nice patio garden, hope you keep at it! ;)

  • Thanks for putting up this video. Your patio looks really nice. Thanks to VolksGarden for the tote suggestion. I think I'll grow my tomatos in the tote. I don't know if I should buy the seeds or the plant. I was told to plant the seed after the last frost. I live in Jersey and I have no idea what's the best time to plant them. Still need to do more research I guess. Anyway, great video. Thank you again! Good luck with your Ph.D.

  • good job.

  • once a herb starts to flower its basically done and the yellowing of the leaves means that it needs to be fed

  • chubb rock

    slick rick

  • Hello! You're doing fine. Instead of spending a fortune in pots, hit up the discount store for some Sterlite totes, - keep the lids! Punch or cut 4 one inch holes in the back and 2 more in the sides, 1 inch from the bottom. That means it drains out the back or out of sight. Put the top on and get a stout box cutter. Put 6 to 8 holes in the top, start with an X or use a hole saw. Bell peppers in back, basil, chives in front, cillantro and garlic at the ends. Use your herb box before it bolts!

  • Thanks for the suggestions. This year I will try to create my own sub-irrigated planters (DIY Earthboxes) to grow most of my veggies. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

  • You sound young and sexy !!!

  • Tip 3: If you notice your tomato and basil drooping in the middle of the day they are too hot. Move them into some shade if you have it and give them a watering to cool down the roots. The plants will perk back up in a few hours.

Good luck and happy gardening. :-)

  • Wow! Thanks for this great info. I'll be sure to follow your tips this season.

  • Tip 2: Basil likes a lot of water often. Also some of the plants might need to be in larger containers with more soil in them. Reason being is because they are exposed on a hot balcony. If the containers are not big enough, you wont have enough soil to insulate the roots from the heat baking the pots and then the roots. Hot roots lead to stressed out plants. In my opinion, you almost can't have a big enough container.

  • Tip 1: Try to water your plants in the morning when it's still fairly cool outside. Watering at night can lead to root rot, not a good thing.

  • You are so funny and cute. I've always wanted a small garden. Maybe I'll start one this year.

  • Great video...great work....

  • Wow! You have a green thumb. I'll have to give it a try.

  • Aside from a few basil casualties, the plants did pretty well. LOL! You might be able to have a longer growing season being that you're in Texas where it's much warmer than Indiana. When you're ready, look up a few videos on here for tips. Hope you do get to enjoy it.

  • It is my understanding that you water them at night in case you get drops of water on the leaves which when combined with sunlight can act as a magnifying glass and burn the plant.

  • Didn't know that. Thanks so much for the tip.

  • Hello Blackphd2b,

your garden is looking good, It looks like you do well with watering but I wondered if you were fertilizing your plants on a weekly bases. If not thats a good place to start to get better results. Also the tomato could use a deeper container their roots like to go deep. Some people get those five gallon buckets and just drill holes in the bottom. I am new to the gardening seen too. I have been having much success with the earthbox. Check me out at Kamisha100.

  • Thanks for the suggestions :-) I repotted all of the plants today. The tomatoes went into big pots (1.25 cu feet) which I think are about 7 gallons, but not sure of the conversion. The peppers went into the blue buckets (12 quarts). I also started using fertilizer today. We'll see how it goes.

Earthbox? Hmm. Going to check out your videos now.

  • Very interesting. Keep us posted on your progress. I hope to garden eventually. Right now I don't even have a balcany though so it will have to wait. :-(

  • Most definitely.

  • Love it! Love it! I need to stop being lazy and get out there and do the same. Problem I have is a squirrel who thinks he lives here. He pulls up all my plants. GRRRR!!! Any suggestions?

  • Yikes! Is there a plant that smells horrible to squirrels? I saw someone put marigold in between their tomato plants to keep away animals/pests. I'm quite clueless when it comes to this stuff :-(

  • Welcome to the "I kill cacti" club my friend. LOL! I figure this is a skill I should develop. Especially now with tainted produce continually being pulled off the shelves.

  • man..I need a garden..think I will do it with my grandson...but I got the death thumb...I might have to enlist some help.

I'm plantin collard greens though!!! Well collard greens, chard and squash hopefully.

  • Nah trust me. I have the death thumb. I've managed to kill not one but TWO cacti IN THE SAME YEAR! LOL so sad.

It's only been a month and the basil was my only casualty... so far. I started them all from plants and not from seed so I could get the feel of it.

  • man...I killed a cactus too...ain't that mess supposed to be impossible?!?! 150 degree death valley weather can't kill one but I can in 2 weeks.

  • LMAO! I overwatered mine. It got all gelatinous looking, then it turned a pale orange (from green), and then it slumped over before it went home to glory LOL.

But I do hear that aloe is supposed to be virtually indestructible. I'm skeptical. I've had plenty of plants that "would tolerate neglect very well" and they all died.

  • Oops, I think you guys just gave them too much water. I live in the dessert too and Iv'e noticed that they only need water when they start to dry juuust a little or look a liiiitle skinnyer than normal. the soil never has to be moist or it'll rot. But it all depends on the type of cactus too I guess.

  • niiiiiiiiice!

  • Thanks

  • Ohh, I want a garden!! Too bad I don't have a patio or a large enough window :(

  • Fire escape? Maybe a hanging plant (topsy turvy) near a window? Just throwing stuff out there, so not sure it will actually work LOL.

  • I was thinking about doing this as well. I love basil too, so I know I would definitely be start with that. But you're doing well :)

    God Bless

    _lei

  • Yea. That stuff is expensive in the grocery stores so that's why I started growing my own. I just wish I knew how to take care of it.

  • Well you have a greener thumb than me, I'm definitely not a plant person!! The plants are looking good!! *poor basil* LOL!!

  • Moment of silence for the basil........................ OK now that THAT'S over with. LOL! Hopefully I'll be able to keep the rest of them alive and thriving.

  • What happened to the basil? :ol I'm hoping you used it all. (I love basil...with garlic.)

  • Uhhhh not exactly LOL. I looked at it one day and it was all wilted and grey. I killed them :-( I think it was a combination of the planter being crowded, not enough water, and not pruning them. Who knows?

  • Have you used any fertilizer? Container plants need to be fertilized, every time you water it leaches nutrients from the soil you need to replace it.

  • Ha! I just finished reading exactly what you said on a gardening website, so I'll have to get on that right away.

I mixed in some Miracle Gro for the small peppers and herbs, but not the tomatoes and big pepper. Is there a specific economical fertilizer you would recommend I use?

Trust me when I say I haven't a clue. I've managed to kill 2 cacti in one year. Thanks for your help.

  • I would use the miricle gro to fertilize the tomatoes follow the directions and u will have great results Make sure u dont over fertilize. I believe with miricle gro u should use it every 7-14 days

  • Thanks! I also wonder if I should transfer the tomatoes to a bigger pot/bucket. The big one just looks so sad.

  • Yes this is a good idea to give them more room for the roots to grow id use around a 5 gallon bucket size container. They also wont dry up so fast
