@LeGrandeOrange i love your comment on so many levels. i think we all have our moments of greatness...but no one has a lifetime of moments of greatness
compare the extended intro on this to the cribs' "stick to yr guns" methinks johnny marr's been recycling a bit - nothing against it though, always thought it was a great riff, both songs are fine example's of johnny's craft
In all seriousness, what is there else to say? The Smiths are the greatest band from the 80's and still reign as the best bands ever in my opinion. The lyricism like this song and many others never seem to bore me at all, i can listen to it over and over. Morrissey will forever be great!!!! I just regret to never see The Smiths on stage. :( Great Upload!
''oh but please put your tongue away.'' This is the craziest, best concert footage I've ever seen. If I had a time machine and could go anywhere in history it would be this place on this night. Love The Smiths forever!
i have to say this. The smiths are the greatest band period. I dont care what people say against them morrisey is amazing and i own all of there songs i love the smiths they rule!!
There is no other Smith's song like miserable lie..It starts off so poetic and simple then the possession catches you off guard and takes over.. From then on out you are in a musical free fall. All you could do then is just hold on tight and enjoy the ride.
a beautiful intro, improves upon the studio one, after the intro I have never really been a fan of this song, except for the line "What do you get for all your trouble and pain, just a rented flat in whalley range, whalley raaaannngggee" :-)
I know what you mean, i started getting into pretty girls make graves after i head, "you took my arm and said, give in to lust give up to lust, oh, heaven knows we'll soon be dust" and on rusholme ruffians i liked "hideous trait on her mother's side"(vagina) and "scratch my name on your arm with a fountain pen, this means you really love me". morrisey always has something awesome to say in his lyrics. oh and "if you ever need self validation, just meet me in the alley by the railway station"
and possibly listen to "Suffer Little Children", "Shakespeare's Sister" and "Miserable Lie" again! Saying that, I am totally aware that everyone has their own opinions.
This is a particularly spectacular version of "Miserable Lie", I couldn't say it's better or worse than the LP version because the studio and the stage are two completely different places. Although the introductory section which isn't on the LP should have definitely been recorded.
"I don't like this song because it's like a simplified version of Suffer Little Children..." - if one truly believes this, I think you should reconsider everything that The Smiths were, everything that music is, ...
I don't like this song because it's like a simplified version of Suffer Little Children - or an out take of Marr practising it, then it goes into a simplified Shakespeare's Sister thing. An amalgam of two better smiths songs is what I mean!
Johnny Marr is the most underrated guitarist of all time. He can literally make my soul feel despair and great joy simultaenously. Its a thing of rare beauty
has anyone ever hit the high note on a song as morrissey did here. this song was seldom played live in the later years of the smith's tours. what a shame the song is brilliant both lyrically and musically.
one off my fave smiths tunes , at least the most emotional one ,and there are a lot, is suffer little children, they only ever played it live once and never again, its was kinda controversial, nearly ended their career, sadly its not on you tube, beautiful song, and the most lyrically crafted song ive ever heard, its narrated my multiple characters.
Great tune again, i may be looking in wrong places but is there a version of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle live anywhere on here after Well I Wonder for me as me fave tune
For me, this is the greatest known live performance of any song by any band ever known to this galaxy... It's so good it puts the original studio version to shame (not hard, due to how poorly recorded it was)
Not to mention the whole gig, was also the best ever recorded.
That means nothing whatsoever! It's just a venue. In fact, don't you think its a good way to call attention to the butchery that occurred there? Raise awareness? C'mon! Think!
id be interested to know what jimi hendrix would've thought of johnny. he may have had to reconsider how greater his own talents actually were. im opening a can of worms on that one. though still i back johnny enormously.
