  • i have a AWA Color TV that has Knobs, its a nice little TV

  • @1FenderGuy l had an ancient Sony that had a rotary tuning knob too,but eventually the old thing died!

  • @AG3304 My AWA color tv has vhf and uhf knobs and there is a pull style on/off/volume switch

  • So, I need a sky dish to get HD, I need a HD TV set, possibly get conned in to buying cables I don't need and I have to pay for the HD channels which are at the moment mostly repeats and shopping channels. Sounds like a right bargin!

  • @morrismagic08 Oh yes,and don't forget they call it Freeview,so presumably the fools that have inflicted all this new tempremental crap upon us'll be handing out the Freeview boxes for us? LOL

  • @AG3304 Exactly.just because it's called'Freeview'doesn't mean it's free! Now with skyplus you can record TV while watching other channels but hang on,couldn't we do that when VHS was the norm?!We've come full circle now but now we have to pay for it on top of our TV licence! I can't recall paying monthly for my VCR back in the day! Theres nothing worth watching these days to justify the expense of HD,which is weird because there was always something worth watching when we had only four channels!

  • @morrismagic08 Spot on with those thoughts,l recall just buying my old Videostar VCR and that was it.The picture quality seemed better then too, makes you wonder if they've turned down the analogue signal in a sneaky attempt to brainwash people into believing the new digital order's better! And yes, there always seemed to be something on those old channels too!

  • @AG3304 lol, thats a thought! The amount af lying going on amongst 'Top brass' these days I wouldnt be at all surprised!

  • I hate digital. Even if the picture doesn't break up it's all 'block like', like giant pixels! I have twenty year old vhs tapes recorded in analogue with better picture than digital!

  • @morrismagic08 Me too.Grossly over-rated like most of this modern crap if you ask me.DVDs are bad too, freezing up and generally buggering about and being annoying.Give me an old VideoStar by JVC or Ferguson et al any day !

  • @AG3304 I still have a ferguson videostar! It's badged as an ITT though. It even has one of those fancy infrared remotes! My parents bought it new in the 1980s. It was then given to me as a teenager for my bedroom when my parents bought a sony SLV (with 'jog and shuttle'!) because the ferguson had no long play option. I still use the ITT to this day and my 7 year old boy find's Playing LP tapes in a SP recorder very amusing! :D

  • @morrismagic08 Sorry mate, that's because you're getting a good signal. The reason your VHS tapes aren't blocky is because the pixels are bleeding together. Freeview over RGB to your set or a digital TV are showing you what the 720x576 pixel image is actually like - Incredibly low detail! UHF RF or Composite blurr it all together.

Personally I hate the vasoline effect from RF and composite.

  • @doritostheking What I mean is, the actual content on my VHS tapes were recorded over twenty years ago when we were analogue! I've uploaded a lot of content from them on my channel. If I record to VHS from TV today it comes out looking exactly the same as the live digital picture (blocky). The video recorder doesn't bleed the pixels togeather at all! All VCRs makes an Exact copy.

  • @morrismagic08 No, the VCR doesn't. At any rate, the colour bleed happens on analog TV because it's six signals combined to one (CVBS which is then UHF modulated). Digital boxes output these signals on seperate wires (RGB SCART), providing the sharpest possible image and exposing how blocky it actually is. Since your digital decoder box is feeding the signal to your VCR, that's what you're recording.

Source: Five years in the TV industry and an elec/elec VRQ L3.

  • @doritostheking Even wired directly to my new'ish TV set the picture is exactly the same. Is this why i seem to get a better picture on my twenty year old TV set I've had since i was like twelve?

  • @morrismagic08 "wired directly to your TV" or not makes no difference to RGB SCART. You're not understanding what I'm saying.

The viewable area on a 4:3 PAL SDTV is on average 640 dots wide by 512 dots tall. This, when using a clean source and a sharp screen, is very blocky.

If you're using a bad source (composite or arial connection), those dots are blurred together, meaning it doesn't look blocky. It's hiding the lack of detail. It's not "Better".

  • @doritostheking ah, I see. so digital or analog you can't realy win either way. Snowy picture on analog or blocky picture with digital.

  • @morrismagic08 Pretty much. The best solution is to have more "dots" which is where HDTV comes in. 1920x1980 is much better!

  • @doritostheking Yes, Ive heard HD TVs are good. Any perticular cables or set up to get the best out of them?

  • @morrismagic08 Well, the source needs to be HD to get the best. A normal arial will only provide normal freeview for most channels. You can get HD Sky or Cable, but some stuff on that still isn't HD, mostly stuff like repeats or shopping channels. And of course, Blu-ray disc players are HD. The cable to the TV is called HDMI and beware! Shops will try and sell you a very expensive one as "better" when really, since it's digital, they're all the same.

  • is that a tvonics freeview box ive got the exact same one

  • That's the one!

  • Well done! :) Your video proves to the public that there's no need to throw away a working television set when the "digital switchover" occurs between now and 2012. I wonder why the so-called "better" freeview doesn't include NICAM stereo sound like the analogue system it's replacing?

  • Thanks! l feel it's high time some of the myths around freeview were shot down in flames.

And why doesn't this so-called better thing have the good NICAM sound.Yet another new thing not as good as its ancestor!

  • I agree! It seems that every time they "change" or "modernise" things, it causes more problems. For example, the "problem" of a spotty picture on analogue television is solved, now we get the problem of the picture and sound breaking up on freeview and not being able to get all the freeview channels in some areas etc.

  • Yes!lf it is not broken, don't meddle! But that's not the government's way with ANYTHING!Looking at freeview is always interrupted by the picture disappearing and the "NO SIGNAL" coming up.During the recent retune we lost even more channels. Some had already gone for no apparent reason.

  • @AG3304 Actually the UHF band is needed for modern stuff. Buy a non crap freeview box and you won't have issues.

  • Since the start of the digital switchover in the UK, the signals gotten too strong.

With people in england getting BBC Wales instead of BBC North west (Winter Hill)

    Tim

  • It goes to show that every time they "change" something that works reliably, it always makes things "worse"!!

  • Sounds about right, another almighty cock-up brought to you by digital TV!

  • I like the ol' TV's they had a classic style of their own. Nice to see one lit up that the Digital world has shut out of the Analog world. Terrific ! Great Idea, not sure what Freeview is just yet, You are so clever !Thanks as always.

  • Thanks for that! Our TV stations have always been free to view. With the demise of analogue, they've come up with the Freeview thing-free to view digital TV.But,as with many things made to replace things,it's not as reliable!

  • YES! Thanks for the upload man :-)

  • Glad you liked it!

  • I see what you mean about not wanting to watch a black and white set, but it can be nice sometimes, a bit like black and white photos eh?

  • lt just proves that even an old black and white set can be used. And you're right,it is nice sometimes!

  • I hooked an ancient TV up using a VCR with the freeview scart cable plugged into that which worked pretty good!

  • Good for you, there's more than one way to do it,that's for sure.

  • hey that was the Mighy Boosh!!

I love bbc tv, have 4 of them on my tv at the mo !! :D

  • The signal makes it to Holland easily by the sound of it!

  • The Freeview box seems at least somewhat similar to the American DTV converter. I have 2 Magnavox's and they are slightly bigger than a VHS cassette.

  • lt really is the size of a cigarette packet.

  • ok thats good to know i have an old tv from the mid 80s but that have a scart plug so i dont have to worry abote that but i live at my parents house now so i use ther tv (a new LG plasma tv but it but it dont work that well the picture looks bad and it becoms very hot after just 2 hours of use) but when i move to a flat (if i find one its hard to get a good and cheap flat today in sweden) i probobly going to use my old 80s tv but i might use the aerial plug for my digital reciver

  • Well at least you seem to know what your options are.Good luck with getting a flat,it's difficult here too.
