Col. Francis S. Gabreski was among the top U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII with 28 confirmed enemy kills; He flew bomber escortings and he also performed ground straffings flying the P-47D Thunderbolt similiar to the ones you're watching.

During straffing some ground targets, Gabreski hugged the ground too low and crashed onto an enemy aircraft; and he spent the rest of the war as a German POW.

And I thnk that we, the USA would have eventually entered WW2 but it might have been like in WW1 maybe not until the waning days of the war. And yes the song maybe a little wrong for the P 47 but it is one of the best songs for a warbird.

Great video, terrible music. I worked with a man that flew P-47s with the 404th Fighter Group. He did'nt shoot down any German Planes, but sure shot the heck out of any other thing that moved on the ground. My hat is off to all the fighter pilots that did this kind of dirty work and to all the fliers of WW2. All are old men now and we should respect them for what they did. They will not be around much longer and an era will have passed. God Bless all vets.

The plane is in a "revetment" which is a berm on 3 sides to stop fire and bomb fragments from hitting the plane.

Doesnt work to well against direct strafing from above but full concrete bunkers are very expensive vs. earth mounds.
