  • I remember this when I was a kid, too. It played on the radio a lot. Des'ree was even on "All That" program (Nickelodeon). At the time she did playback, and I didn't understand why, but I still love this song. Cheers!

  • MY FIFTH GRADE GRADUATION SONG!!!! & I STILL KNOW ALL THE WORDS <3

  • This song has always been a favorite of mine. Ever since I was a little kid in the mid/late 90s.

  • Shouldn't it really be about the message of this song and not the age of the people who are listening to it or commenting on it??? Because there really are no adults on here if even the "over" 18's have to criticize younger kids for listening to this song because they weren't born when it was released and then the same ones complain complain about the music that is popular today and about the fact that teenagers no longer listen to "good" music.

  • @ienjoybooks Agreed!

  • I remember singing to this song when i was a kid, it used to play on PBS kids, used to loved that adverts!! miss those days

  • Would like a handjob from her hands

  • I was a child of the 90's, I don't remember when this came out, nor do I remember mush about it, BUT I do remember the message of the song (basically " you gotta be-") this has stuck with me for years until by happenstance I rediscovered this gem of music, forget who was born when, this is genuinely a good song

  • It 's been a long time since I've heard this song. I was in the forth or fifth grade when I heard this song.

  • my teacher tried to quote this song in class the other day as a inspirational speech to give to class before finals and graduates....no one caught it then it got quite.....and i was like dude....did u just quote des'ree........he was like what...i was like yeah man thats a des'ree song.... he was like uhhhmmmm....

  • I LOVE this song! Have always loved it since I first heard it when I was like 12 I think. I was majorly picked on and taunted and teased and this song gave me strength. Going to use it within the next few weeks for my students to reflect on.

  • Great Song...

  • UN NUEVO HIMNO ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • VH1 brought me

  • i dont remeber when this song came out but what does it matter its a great song thats all that matters

  • No it's the fact that this song was so powerful that it's message lasted long enough for the people that were to young to understand til when they weren't. Also who are you to judge what song brought up what emotions in whom ever? So maybe you should go some where else and find those adults mmkay pumpkin. ;)

  • This brings back so much nostalgia!

  • i remember when this song first came out we had this cute little dance to it in kindergarden . now im a senior in high school about to graduation . damn , time flies . lol

  • This is in the soundtrack for Tyler perrys 2012 good deeds looking forward to it

  • It was released sometime in the 90's

  • What year was this released??

  • how beautiful and strong......

  • this just screams "Adam Sandler Movie"

  • 90 people disliked this so they could make the number 90...the best decade ever!

  • i remember when this was on PBS kids

  • I remember hearing this song as a little kid and really liking it. Years later (which was a few months ago), I came across this song again on the radio and I started singing along to the chorus, even though I hadn't heard it in a long time.

  • Cool

  • aww this was my favorite song when i was like 5 lol

  • @getyagotcha You might do well to learn the English language and use it. I couldn't read any of this.

  • This song must have been popular for a good many years, since it seems not a SINGLE person here is old enough to have been potty-trained when it was first released. I guess this wouldn't be a Youtube page if it wasn't filled up with 12-21 year-olds talking about their ages and childhoods (or some fake memories). Gotta remember to look elsewhere to find adults.

  • @xreddragonx I am 20 and I clearly remember this song from back when it first hit the radio. I don't know exactly what it is that is bugging you, but I don't see any issue with musical works lasting beyond the initial markets.

  • @xreddragonx So you never remembered any of the songs your folks played all the time when u were little?? I do and I had a much older brother . . folks think I am ancient aahahah . . . my Nana lived with us too, so I have four generations of music memories. You have, BTW, "found" an adult. I AM an adult.

  • @xreddragonx right? people saying "oh i was like 5, or in kindergarden" , no way in hell you remember this song when you were that young... i could see age 10+ lol

  • @xreddragonx I was 7, I remember it pretty clearly, though I have never been very into it. I really don't think you give kids enough credit. Some kids have older siblings who introduced them to music at a young age, like in my case. However, I remember songs playing on radios from as early an age as 4. Just because a child isn't old enough to understand the song lyrically, doesn't mean they can't remember liking the tune.

  • @sharkycomplete Thank you! lol I agree

  • @sharkycomplete This is very true, why do people think that MOST kid shows (lesson in kindergarten) involve LOTS of singing? At a young age music can be advantageous in learning! In fact kids learn faster than adults, why do you think people tell you to start your kids off speaking different languages (the younger the better) is so good! So, while children may not grasps the meaning of the song (some do, surprisingly), doesn't mean they can't memorize it or get a feeling from it!

  • @xreddragonx Man...people complain about everything huh?

  • @xreddragonx So what? Mind you, I am older than those aforementioned ages, while still being young, but music tastes shouldn't be pinholed to a specific age group. I listen to Tennessee Ernie Ford (the 30s and 40s) and have a record player, but not an ipod. Just be happy there are kids out there who like this older music instead of having their heads shoved up Bieber's and Kanye's asses. I just listened to a Kanye song, and good lord it was awful....This is a hell of alot better.

  • @xreddragonx err actually i wasn't being potty-trained when this song came out and im 21. unless YOU were potty-trained when you were 4...this song was released in 1994.

  • @xreddragonx So what if someone's 21 or wasn't "old enough to have been potty-trained when it was first released " ??? It's a good song , good music tends to be able to transcend all generations, whether or not they were alive when it was released .

  • @xreddragonx to be fair I was potty trained at age 1. I did remember this clearly though because this genre was among the first I was introduced to. Heck, at that age there were only two genre's to me. Bad and good, this is among the latter.

  • @xreddragonx hey i was born in 1996 and im 15 now and i loveeee this song. my mom used to sing this to me when i was 5 :)

  • @xreddragonx Just because you were an adult when this song came out doesn't make you better than anybody else. I don't understand why you can't just enjoy the song instead of making rude, childish comments like this? Grow up.

  • @xreddragonx your the one doing that? grow up and be mature, you seem about equal to my 3 year old niece...

  • @xreddragonx well, yeah... I'm 22, I remember this song vividly as a kid. But think about it- My generation LIVES on YouTube, Facebook, etc...hence this song reviving "childhood memories" of the young adults who are most apt to use the most popular sites. I bet you still use aim, silly.

  • @xreddragonx Well, at least there's a single person! Me, 54. :) Fantastic song. Never get too old to remember to live by words like those in this song.

  • @xreddragonx Because everybody knows that when you're 16, you don't need any song telling you tha 'you gotta be strong'... Songs like this one saved me more times than I can count. I'm 20 and perfectly able to able to understand and appreciate this song - and English is not my first language, so I guess, remember to look elsewhere to find idiots.

  • Video is epic!!!! gone are the times where music and talent actually counted and recongised. It goes to show back then you did not need be half naked to sell the music! Simple video and powerful voice...

Another fine example of this is Massive Attack ft Sara Nelson! Simple but powerful!

We should make it our mission to bring Des'ree back and other greats e.g Heather Small. Who's with me!? And get rid of these x factor peasents once and for all!
