Delightful video. Thanks for passing it along! Thought you might find our recent "sequel" interesting too. Ours are mallards in the Adirondacks' Champlain Valley. Cheers!
@alcancum I am nearly positive you are trolling, but for the benefit of those who are genuinely curious: This is normal and everyday behavior for the wood duck species. If the nesting box wasn't there, the mother would had laid eggs in a tree hollow and they would have jumped from there. Try a little research next time.
@xaandria86 amen to that, its nice to know that some people actually know what goes on in nature instead of just being babies saying oh no the poor ducklings !!
@Pablo7rh I want to say there were 12, it has been a few years since we took this video. After they left we never saw the family again, ungrateful balls of fluff.
Baby wood ducks have to fall from at least 10 feet or more to get their digestive tract going. I bet you all didn't know the reason for them nest so high up off the ground as opposed to any other duck.
@ielaba98 Wood ducks naturally seek out holes in trees in which to lay eggs. I had my doubts about the hole size too, but apparently mama duck called it home.
@RingneckDoveFan Actually, she can and does. I didn't think she'd be able to fit either, until she did. Remember the wood ducks are much smaller than the more common mallard ducks. Check out some of the other wood duck videos on YouTube, some of them have captured the mama duck entering or exiting their nest boxes.
What! Wait! where did all those ducks come from? It was like clown car filled with clowns popping out- damn in all seriousness nature is awsome-I've never seen anything like this. Amazing video-hope those ducks live a long healthy life.
There is a wire mesh on the wall of the box with the exit hole. We had some shots from inside the nesting box but they weren't very good, so you can't see the inside.
The mother actually flies up there and lays her eggs in the nest box. After a few weeks, they hatch and spend their first day inside the box, then they all jump out the next day. If a box isn't around, wood ducks use hollow trees. Offering a box is a good way to get wood ducks to frequent your pond.
Lawrence! God dammit, Lawrence, get out of the fucking nest!
Ma-...I'm...I'm scared!
Also, tandem duck jumping.

@xaandria86
Well that doesn't exactly answer the question. How did she lay the eggs? She clearly cannot fit in that hole.

@4986hunterofsouth A simple wire grid (similar to chicken wire) stapled to the side gave them an easy ladder.
